Geography

Aughnys Snowy Boreal Forest is the name given to a large taiga that stretches beyond the northern shore of the [] landmass. It comprises a full 212 million hectares, with nearly 14% of these being occupied by zu'aan infrastructure and other unnatural developments. The cold climate of Aughnys, coupled with the slow and methodical way of life of the local flora, has allowed for many zu'aan cities and buildings to remain following the apocalypse, in some manner, and these ruins can be felt all cross the boreal forest. They are used by surviving zu'aan and kin'toni alike, as pillars of growth and aids for survival.

Scavenging for resources, as well as searching for any remaining documents of information containing important technological information that may help the zu'aan rebuild their civilization faster is wanton in these ruins, and this has made them a popular spot for kin'toni hunting, making them unsuitable and dangerous for zu'aan residence. Therefore as of today, they are largely abandoned. Most of Aughnys is comprised, however, by its sprawling taiga forest, a coniferous woodland spanning the bank of the northern mountainous regions. A cold, desolate place, it is largely comprised of these evergreen trees that bring the place to life every growing season, and are blanketed by snow every fall and winter.

Despite its closeness with the mountains, most of the Aughnys taiga is made of low land, and the biome of the mountains does not interfere much with the climate in Aughnys, as the incline into the northern alpine tundras is very gradual and slow. Most of the trees in Aughnys are coniferous and of medium height, with a number of shrubs, low hanging trees and grass. The presence of fauna is few due to the harsh cold climate but it does allow for many species of fish within its bodies of water. Aughnys is crossed on by the river Yeg, which dawns at the northern mountains and snakes its way down gradually until it meets the snowy forest ground, making a convoluted course through Aughnys, mainly through the west, and leaving the territory through the southwest, following the indentations of the land towards the sea.

There are 5 main affluents of the river Yeg, with many other smaller and less significant ones, that pass through Aughnys, 3 of these settling in open lakes of varying size. The climate is cold, as expected, and suffers from cool temperatures throughout the entire year, with amiable but still very cold climate during summer and spring. It receives very little precipitation and relies on the river Yeg for its sources of water. The soil is very draining and home to a vast underground water reserve, which absorbs water from the surface as a replacement for evaporation, creating a water cycle replica that causes the enviroment to grow and thrive. It is not propense to any natural disasters except fires, which may happen during the warmer months.

Wild fires are incredibly devastating, and though it is believed that most of them were caused artificially during the zu'aan days, they are still a danger today. The region receives stable amounts of snow during fall and winter, as well as hail storms. Thunder is rare, and as indicated by its name, the aurora borealis is visible in this region from its northern territory, which suffers from the odd time changes associated with the poles, with much longer nights in winter and much longer days in summer.

Plants

Plant life in Aughnys is majorly composed of the trees that form the Snowy Boreal Forest, a large landmass of medium sized, largely coniferous, evergreen tree life that gives the region its namesake. There are also many shorter trees, as well as shrubs, grass, and herbs living in the regions. Here are a few examples of unique species pertaining to the region: Pezra, a tubular seedpod bearing plant of fruit that grows near the banks of the river Yeg. It is a water sprout that much prefers to grow in wet, fertile soil and will refuse to do so in drier earth. It is dark green and bears a thin series of stalks, which grow into each other in a formation akin to a spider's web, giving it a unique appearance.

It is a family member of a series of seedpod bearing plants that are generally located in the northern regions of Canlai. This one in particular grows during spring, being planted in late winter, and flowers during the season, giving fruit during summer and dying in early winter. It produces a pale blue flower with a dark yellow core, usually with 5 to 6 long, velvety petals. After the flowering season, it grows a seedpod shaped like a sack, where it produces small tube shaped white seeds, divided into quarters inside the pod. These grow during early summer and ripen into a very, very pale blue color different from its original dirty white pigment, and at this point they may be harvested and consumed.

Though they are technically scientifically classified as a fruit, they are largely treated as a vegetable in zu'aan cuisine, especially in dressings and salads. They have a very amiable, savory taste that has granted them a place of honor among meat and fish dishes, as well as savory soups. They are also eaten raw as snacks, or crushed into a fine powder as used as a special flour. Pezra bread and other baked goods are very popular among the river dwelling zu'aan communities of Aughnys. Gulfante, a light blue reed that grows on the side of trees. It is classified as a tall grass, but behaves so like some sort of vine. It grows vertically along the bark of high trees, coiling around until it reaches the high branches, and then sticks out in clusters of thin leaves.

It is pale blue and white in color, and its leaves are thin and somewhat sharp, just like regular long grass. On the underside of the leaves, dew drops form and various insects enjoy laying their eggs there, making the plant a natural breeding ground for them. Their roots are in the ground, mixing together with the host tree's roots for protection. They do not damage the tree. They thrive during winter when the trees shed their leaves and they can access the most sunlight, though they are a present flora all year. The leaves are not edible by zu'aan dietary standards, though they can be made so. Due to the association with insect eggs, however, they seem to find the idea repulsive.

Animals

Animal life in Aughnys is largely composed of forest dwelling mammals, large or otherwise, though typically smaller and medium sized, insects which predominantly inhabit most regions with more extreme climates, some birds which either live naturally in the region or use it as a migratory spot during spring and summer, and some amphibians which live by the small water bodies. Notably, there is little reptilian life in the place, and most of the fauna is comprised simply of fur mammals. Here are some examples native to the region: Jaewyt, a small, grey, furry rodent like mammal that is roughly the size of a small handbag. They live in groups near the eastern border of Aughnys and seem to form a strict social hierarchy based on the depth of their fur.

They possess strong, precise canines that they use to trim their own fur and the fur of their members which they consider inferior, although the overlying criteria for this is uncertain and seems to be decided intuitively by older members. Respected and high members of their 'clans' will have large and overbearing fur which may be allowed to grow until 2-3 inches, while inferior members which can be used in some manner as wild slaves and as breeders for the group can have little to no fur at all, at the leisure of the older members. Despite being very small and, by zu'aan standards, adorable and fluffy, they are quite aggressive and territorial with one another and with other clans, all will take part in bloody conflicts and high end territorial disputes.

They are known to fight back against their predators and put on a show of bravado as they do so, rarely running away and having a very skewed sense of survival, making researches think there's something wrong with their DNA. The fact that they refuse to expand to the western side of Aughnys was a discussed point back when biology was still relevant. They are edible by zu'aan standards and were often hunted following the kin'toni outbreak, though doing so proved to be challenging, as they often swarmed their hunters with infinite bravery. While their small size proved to be a challenge that zu'aan were easily able to overcome, their sharp razor canines and suicidal will did not, and it was often that these hunters contracted diseases from these animals, prompting them to create rough impassable clothing in order to hunt the small rodents.

They were roasted and often eaten that way, or grilled, as their meat is very tender and has a tendency to completely fall apart if used in stews or soups. Their meat, notable, was also eaten raw a very long time ago, a practice that some wilder zu'aan have resurrected. It has a mild taste of white meat and is very delicious, according to zu'aan. Their fangs are also used to make needles, collars and other acessories or tools, being unusually sharp and resilient. Oddly enough, they are herbivores, and their diet consists of no plant that would warrant such aggressive demeanor and evolutionary traits, making zu'aan wonder once more why, exactly, they were the way that they were.
