Historical Overview

Records indicate that the first zu'aan settlement on the island was built by a tribe named Ganzhi in the 5th century of the second era. The Ghanzi are believed to have been a nomad zu'aan group that decided to transition to permanent agriculture sometime during the Copper Age. A millennium later, with the rise of Ancient Age culture, a similar settlement was established at the plains known at the time as Renukha, in the northwest, and named Abkhorab, which later disappeared. The Abkhorab lived in relative peace with the Ghanzi, though little remained of the original tribe at this point. Records suggest that there many tribal divisions within the original, but their names have been lost to history.

The Abkhorab, more advanced and knowleageble than the secluded tribe that already lived in the region, largely minded their own business until their demise. It was not until the year 1300 of era 3 that other zu'aan settlements, also mentioned by historical records, could be found around the core of this island known as Ajmosa. By the Middle Ages, the inhabitants of the Ajmosa Plains Plateau had formed large settlements within the isle. Though the Ghazhi and Abkhorab had already disappeared at this point, their influence and heritage could be felt across the many different zu'aan groups within Ajmosa. By the start of the early modern age, around the 20th century of era 3, about 120 settlements could be found along the island with the overall population reaching 190,000.

It was believed at this time that the majority of the island's inhabitants were descedents of zu'aan from the mainland who had come to colonize the isle, and their native inhabitants. Later, archaeological records suggest that the inhabitants of the island's core, which are now known as the Ajmosa Plains Plateau, inhabited the island since the end of the second millennium. A few years later, in the 21st century of era 3, the island's population had declined to 60,000 people, the reasons for this having to do with intercontinental conflicts over which the island stood in the middle of, causing mass emigration and lack of resources. The island was included in the boundary between the zu'aan territory of Soikk'm and Jaixgna, causing it to be under constant territorial dispute.

It was the only entry point from the Soikk'm mainland to the eastern plains of Jaixgna, which ultimately led to the demise of most of its population within the next decade, the final zu'aan settlement being located at an area called Lower Kayem. A series of villages would then be established in the years following the war, which would conclude with neither nation attaining victory, an array of living arrangements made specifically to repopulate the island, called Pariatsag. It was located on the southern mainland side of the island. But this village complex was abandoned when a fierce snowstorm caused massive destruction. Today these villages exist still in the island, inhabited by wild animals, but the majority of its vegetation has disappeared due to toxic zu'aan leftovers.

A small section of the island, which is still inhabited by indigenous people, has been preserved in its natural state by the government as a "forest park". Due to the series of misfortunes surrounding the island and considering that colonizing it was a financial challenge with little reward, it remained like this through the entire modern era. As of the Awakening Age, all zu'aan presence in Ajmosa had been eradicated. It was not only until much later that the island would come to be populated again, under the guise of survival, by fleeing zu'aan, and nowadays, after much trial and error, it hosts the embers of civilization once more.

Geography

Ajmosa Plains Plateau is a secluded bit of extremely dry land located between the valleys, mountains and very high plains of the continental region known as Imur-dlav, a considerably large isle in the northern coast of Taerel. Due to the highly irregular terrain within Imur-dlav, Ajmosa Plains Plateau is mainly the only part of the island that is actually inhabited by zu'aan, being mostly consistent of plains and agreeable land, unlike most of the region, which generally is quite significant. While still very irregular and sort of hard to transverse, it is the only suitable location in the area for zu'aan to particularly settle into. The isle essentially has an approximate area of 120,000 square kilometers.

While Ajmosa Plains Plateau consists of approximately 14,826 square kilometers of this land, leaving the rest almost completely deserted, at least as of the modern age and of the post Awakening Age era. Written records also show no zu'aan influence in the area, and the region is thought to only have been discovered much later. Imur-dlav is shaped roughly like a pair of oddly bent fingers, sometimes called the shape of a mechanical grip. Ajmosa Plains Plateau is located within the large space between the two 'fingers', deep within the land. None of its 'borders' actually meet the sea. It has one river passing through it, the Amand'v, a generally large freshwater river that flows in from the mountains in the first 'finger' and dawns at sea to the south of Ajmosa.

It has a very small forestal region, being mainly comprised of evergreen trees, staying lush and verdant all year and beckoning an agreeable and pleasant climate, a surprising safe haven among the perilous land of Imur-dlav. These can be particularly found among patches in the mostly desert land, but are, overall, a rare sight and the number of their locations can most certainly be counted with one's hands, which is quite significant. The climate is, surprisingly, agreeable to zu'aan standards. It is a dry warm tropical climate, with little to not rain fall and long periods of drought. The sun is quite strong in the area, but protection from the surrounding higher planes makes it mostly manageable during the cold seasons and the start of spring.

Its large amounts of forestal ground contributes immensily to preserving this moderate warm climate. It suffers from strong winds from the east and north and can sometimes be affected by regional sand storms. It has very little chance of earthquakes in spite of its location not too far from a continental divide. The reason for this is regarded as being that the tectonic plates in the region are thought to be inactive and unlikely to shift. It rarely rains, it does not have snow or hail, and dry thunder storms can sometimes happen. Droughts are frequent in the hot summer. It can also suffer from tornados and the island is known to be on a common collision course with rough cyclones, which may bring rain, on the rare occasion.

The nights can be very cold, passing the negative degrees in the peak of winter, but the days are always warm, even in the cold seasons. There is a plethora of minerals and valuable geological resources available in the region and its surroundings.

Plants

There are a great variety of plants within Ajmosa Plains Plateau, many of them unique and native to the region due to its status as part of an island. Bushes and low hanging shrubs are frequent, as well as tree life. Vines and grass are common, and nearly every inch of the place is permeated by plant life, despite the dry climate and surrounding desert plains. Here are a few notable species from the area: Kuzxe, a citrus-bearing wild fruit tree that grows in the side of cliffs and mounds. It has a pale brown trunk that is slightly bent at the top and has a scrawny aspect, almost as if it's rotten. It produces a bundle of branches towards the sides, almost like a wilow, equally crooked as the trunk, and it had cyan green leaves that are very thin and sharp, pointing out from the tree.

Its fruit, called the kuzxe'im ('fruit of the kuzxe' in the ancient zu'aan language that gave it its name), is a thin, rough citrus that grows in a coil around the branches. It has very tough, rubbery skin, and very little of its insides has any edible or attractive properties that would normally serve to attract animals. Instead, it only produces the bare minimum of a very acid green liquid, its seeds, and an extremely bitter white layer protecting them. Despite the usual evolutional downsides of creating a generally unpleasant fruit, it is a very resilient speciment, and in time it always manages to propagate, as evident by the fact that is has remained in the wild for a very long time, as shown by ancient records.

It bears fruit in winter and autumn, and remains still in summer and spring. A sub species of kuzxce, called the kuaiw, produces a tiny white flower during spring, with short white petals and a bulbous yellow core, in order to help with propagation. It is an evergreen and remains verdant during the entire year. While its fruit is next to useless nutritionally, it can be used by zu'aan in aromatic applications, in candles, incense, tobacco and perfumes. The skin can also be boiled and made into a sour sweet, but this seems to be very unpopular and very much an acquired taste. Miqyv, an ordinary shrub that can be found all over the plateau. It is light green and and has no branches, instead having a thin green stem that develops into a bunch of tri-peaked leaves with spikes along the trim and a rough texture.

They are not edible and can cause grave damage if consumed by zu'aan, and they share a number of similarities with many other plants in the region, making foraging a dangerous errand in this area, as it is in most. They grow all year and live up to 2 years, spreading very fast. They are a native species but are treated as invasive due to their ability to ruin crops, in the case that they spread onto fertile soil. They are extremophiles and can be found thriving along the entire island, though their Ajmosa variants are typically a stronger green than their desert counterparts. They are used in natural medicine by zu'aan.

Animals

The Ajmosa Plains Plateau are very picturesque and vast territories, thanks to which rather massive and large creatures are located here, who are simply impossible to live in other conditions. One of these local giants is arachia. These extraordinary lizards in ancient times existed on all continents and were very diverse, but very few have survived to this day, and one of them was arachia. Its maximum length is 9 meters, height - 4 meters. On the back of the arachia, there are 17 bone plates, which are not outgrowths of any bones of the internal skeleton, but are located separately. The plates are movable and can change the angle of inclination. The largest plates can reach sizes of 60 × 60 cm.

The plates form two rows on the back of the animal, with the plates of one row growing opposite the gaps in the other row. Another notable feature of Arachia is its two pairs of tail spines, about a meter long. Animals for self-defense use them. Predators that attacked them, such as favi, could receive severe and even fatal wounds from angry arachia. Despite their formidable appearance and size, arachia are quite peaceful animals that feed mainly on plants. They easily find a common language with other animal species and even often protect them from favi. These giants live alone, huddling together in small groups only with the onset of cold weather. In addition, a very entertaining duk bird lives on the Ajmosa Plains Plateau, which, like the arachia, cannot be found anywhere else.

Duk has the same plump body shape as a Wakel, only much larger. It has long legs, curly tail feathers, bare yellow legs, strong claws, and a featherless head. The short, undeveloped wings are too small to support the body in flight, but they are used to maintain balance at maximum speed. The large, hooked bill, gray at the base and yellow or green at the rounded tip, plays an important role in hunting prey or resolving conflicts with other duk. Their skin color ranges from black to grey. The bird is quite large and, unlike their feathered relatives, duk do not build nests, they live in burrows. The main diet of duk includes fruits, nuts, seeds and roots, as well as fish, if the bird manages to catch it.

There are also water kavak on the plateau. Quite large animals with massive horns and long curved fangs protruding from under the upper lip of the beast. The general coloration is brown, the upper lip and rings around the eyes are white. The beast looks quite impressive and menacing, although in fact it is completely harmless and shy. It feeds on plants. Here is who you really need to beware of, so it is favi. One of the few predators in the region, but no less dangerous. Characteristic features of the representatives of the family are a thick head with a short, thick or pointed muzzle; their hind legs are shorter than their front legs, so their backs are sloping.

The tail is shaggy: long, coarse hair forms a mane on the neck and along the back. Coloring varies from place to place. Northern favi have a light almost white coat with obvious black stripes, while those in the south are more bronze, in some cases even more red, and the stripes are quite pale and almost invisible.
