History

The Thruer clan have a completely unique position in that they are one of the only kin’toni clans to attempt a peaceful life, and almost entirely succeeding at it. The founder of this clan was one of the very first kin’toni, one of the ones created in the zu’aan laboratory. But unlike the other test subjects, she was not a soldier, but instead, just a normal person. After the kin’toni broke free and started to rampage, she at first lost control, giving in to her bloodlust. When the bloodlust faded, she was horrified with herself. She gathered up any kin’toni she could find.

Those who also truly hated the thought of blood or killing, and struck out away from the city. After a long time of travelling, they came to the Noda Archipelago, a distant area out in the ocean, barely connected to the mainland of the continent. They chose to settle here, far from any zu’aan or kin’toni, and attempt a life of peace and isolation. The first thing they did was to gather up herds of livestock and bring them to the archipelago, ensuring they had a source of humanely gathered blood they could use in order to resist temptation and bloodlust.

They became expert farmers, and learnt how to drain small amounts of blood from their livestock without harming them. After a period of exploration, they found an extensive series of caves that began in their territory, and made them their home, living underground where they were safe from the sun, and leaving the livestock up on the land during the day to graze freely. Soon, they learnt to fish, building simple boats and using them to sail short distances at night and catch fish, which became their main source of food. They chose their location well.

And were able to live in isolation for a very long time. The only outside contact they had was the occasional wandering nomadic zu’aan tribe who passed nearby, who were warned to stay away to ensure the safety of everyone. Soon, rumours spread throughout the land of the only kin’toni clan on the continent who genuinely lived a life of peace. Soon, tormented and disgusted kin’toni came, desperate to join the clan and live a life of peace. None were refused, save those who were clearly too savage and uncontrolled to live peacefully. Though the Thruer clan never grew as large as the more savage, wild clans.

They became a decent size, and managed to keep themselves under control. The addition of kin’toni from across the continent led to the clan acquiring a great many skills and advancements, making great discoveries. By recent times, they have made iron tools (but not weapons, as that would violate their passivity), proper boats, and have created extensive farms and fields to support and feed the clan. Every kin’toni in the clan has sworn an oath to peace, and they have amazingly kept this oath, living without conflict for decades, successfully controlling their bloodlust.

Biology

Biologically, the kin’toni of the Thruer clan are some of similar to the zu’aan of any clan, though they are still distinctly different. They are stronger and faster than the zu’aan, though they are usually quite a bit below the levels of most kin’toni. They physically appear very similar to zu’aan, except for slight changes which are visible in the face in particular. They are very good swimmers, with their bodies being adapted for the water. Most members of the clan are lean and strong, with wide hands and feet that assist in pulling them powerfully through the water.

They have an increased lung capacity which helps them to dive underwater and remain there for longer, and their eyes automatically pull down a clear outer covering which protects their eyes and allows them to see underwater. They also have excellent vision in the dark to help them see in the depths of the sea, and to see when underground in dark areas of their home caves.

The Thruer kin’toni’s eyes have blue irises, with black sclera and vertical, beaded pupils. In darkness, the eyes glow faintly, emitting a gentle blue light. Their ears are small and rounded, but very good at catching and directing sound waves in enclosed spaces such as the caves. This excellent auditory ability, paired with their vision in the dark, allows them to easily navigate the caves even when there is no light available. They have little hair, though they are not fully bald. Their hair grows naturally short and does not increase in length, regardless of the gender of the individual.

The height of these kin’toni varies, much like the zu’aan, with some members of the clan being far shorter than others. This is partially due to the variety in the ranks of the clan, with some members joining from other regions and clans, meaning they have a naturally different biology, which adjusts over time to match that of the rest of the clan. This process can take time, with most new kin’toni in the clan taking around a decade to truly begin to resemble the other members of the Thruer clan. It is not clear why this process occurs, but some members of the clan believe their refraining from meat has adjusted their bodies to emit a hormone which slowly causes the alteration of other kin’toni and grants them a resistance to their bloodlust and violent urges. This is not a proven idea though, and is simply a theory of some of the more intelligent Thruer.

The gender of kin’toni of the Thruer clan is not immediately obvious. Males and females appear remarkably similar, with most overt signals of gender fading over time. The genitals of the kin’toni remain distinct, but other signs such as the breasts or growth of facial hair are lost. One potential distinguishing sign of gender to an outsider viewer is the softer, rounder face of the males and the sharper, longer face of the males. The voice can at times also be a telltale sign of gender, with males tending to have slightly deeper voices while females have lighter voic.

Though this difference is often negated by the tendencies of the clan to speak in a monotone, attempting to speak at the same volume and cadence in order to reduce differences between individuals.

Culture

The Thruer clan is remarkably culturally advanced compared to most other kin’toni clans. Most of their culture surrounds abstinence from blood, or activities that assist this abstinence, but either way, it makes them more culturally strong than other clans. The clan believes that individuality is dangerous, and that by becoming one, they will more easily resist the temptation for zu’aan blood. They believe that if they are all the same, linked together, they will provide one another strength against their urges. To this end, they attempt to erase individuality.

They all wear virtually identical clothes, of the same cut and colour (with the specifics of this differing from week to week). They attempt to speak in the same voice, all following the same rhythm and cadence, mimicking one another. Those with higher or lower registers do their best to neutralize the difference and imitate their brethren. Despite the attempts to erase individuality, the clan still encourages and embraces choosing your own pastimes and hobbies. They believe that by finding your own passion, you lose the inherent kin’toni passion for blood and violence.

These passions vary greatly, from music and art, to caring for animals. There are few limitations, so long as it does not harm any other living being senselessly. The Thruer kin’toni live individually, each claiming a section of the underground Noda Caverns as their own, a place where they can sleep and find seclusion and peace. If new spaces are needed, iron pickaxes and tools are used to hew them out and make more space and rooms. Though on rare occasions pairs may occur, for the most part, the Thruer clan prefer to be separate in this, though little else.

The Thruer take great pleasure in clothing. They grow and harvest flowering plants in order to create dyes for clothes. Many kin’toni in the clan spend a lot of time designing and weaving new styles of clothe for the clan, and those deemed best are made for the entire clan to wear together. Because of this, every kin’toni has multiple items of clothing, custom made to fit them perfectly. It is very important to them to maintain the quality of their clothes, protecting them from damage, and washing them often. They quickly learnt the best methods of washing clothin.

And each kin’toni takes great pride in washing the clothes they wore the previous day and displaying to the rest of the clan how pristine they have kept their clothes. There are multiple forms of clothes besides the basic coverings. They have also designed shoes and socks, hats, gloves, and more recently, even capes that they enjoy draping themselves in for warmth.

Government

The Thruer clan are led by their founder, one of the original experiment kin’toni created in a lab. It was she who led them to the Noda Archipelago and founded the settlement, creating their ideology of peace and isolation. She is the only member of the clan exempt from the attempts to erase individuality. They believe that as their leader, she must retain her independence in order to best lead and support the clan, with a unique mindset. The clan do not know her name, save a few of her closest supporters who followed her from the very beginning, and simply call her “Founder”, or “the Lady”.

She is seen as a strict, but fair, leader. She has total control of the clan, making decisions on behalf of every kin’toni in the clan. Rather than having strict laws for the clan, she has basic guidelines and ideologies by which the clan are required to live. The most important and vital of these, is the prohibition of violence. Any member of the clan who commits an act of violence for any reason is immediately exiled, and never allowed to return to the clan under any circumstances. Stealing or taking from another kin’toni is also a grievous offence, though not punishable by exile.

Instead, the offending kin’toni is usually given labour of some form to atone, or in particularly bad cases, the victim may be given control of their punishment. Gluttony is also seen as a particularly bad crime in the clan. The clan is relatively large, but do not have extensive supplies of food. The Founder commanded that any who are too greedy, or take more than is fair, are detracting from the clan. Offenders may be punished with a decrease in their allotted food rations, in proportion to their greed, in order to teach them to appreciate what they have, and not try take more.

Though not a law, it is expected of all members of the clan to do their best to mimic and emulate the other kin’toni of the clan. Those who act out too much, or tend to be too head strong and individual, may be spoken to by the Founder, though it is very rare for her to actually hand down a punishment for it. Another strange prohibition in the clan is the one against any form of sexual activity or nudity. The Founder was the one to institute this law, believing modesty and timidity to be important. She has banned all members of the clan from participating in any form of sexual activity.

She finds it distasteful. It is partially because of this that the clan has such a fascination with clothing. On the occasions that kin’toni have been found completely nude, they have been looked down upon by the clan and shamed. Though no formal punishment is given, the very shame and embarrassment is usually enough to prevent repeat events. Any kin’toni that are found fully active in sex or a sexual act of any kind are immediately exiled. Sex is seen as an act with too much emotion, that can lead only to violence and anger, and so they are exiled so that the outburst of emotion will not spread.

Military

The Thruer clan have absolutely no military or military presence. They are totally and completely against violence in any form, be it physical, verbal, or even a form of emotional abuse. They have absolutely no weapons and no combat training in the clan, and have a policy to never fight, even in defence of their home. Though this is the official stance and belief of the clan, not everyone follows it totally. Some of the newer members of the clan (those not originally of the clan, but who joined later, seeking peace) have combat training and skill in weapons making.

Some of these have found each other and banded together, believing that at times, violence can be justified if it is truly necessary. In the time assigned for members of the clan to practice their individual passions in private, many of these kin’toni train in combat. Though they do not wish to be part of any violent act, they also do not wish to lose their home, and so train to defend it if necessary. They have also crafted basic stone weapons and hidden them in secret stashes around the archipelago, so that if needed they can be armed at a moment’s notice and rush to defend the clan.

Even if it be against the will of the Founder. There are not many members of this group, and as such, they are not very powerful or skilled, but they are well trained. The variety of kin’toni from many clans helps them to learn a variety of combat styles and abilities, helping them prepare for various situations. This small group of kin’toni use only stone weapons. Though the clan knows how to mine and use iron, it is a valuable resource and closely watched, so they are forced to use only stone. They have created basic stone knives and swords, as well as spears with stone tips.

They have also created bows with stone tipped arrows. These bows are not the most efficient or powerful weapons, but they are the only ranged weapon they have managed to create. These kin’toni are very suspicious and paranoid. They are fully aware of what will happen if they are discovered. They all found peace and happiness in the Thruer clan, and do not want to lose it. They have been very careful to conceal their actions in order to remain safe, and in everything, are perfect members of the clan, imitating and perfectly integrating into the clan.

Though they prepare for the worst, they still see themselves as part of the clan, and strive in everything to be as law abiding as they can. So far, the Thruer clan’s distant home has ensured that there is no need for defence or violence, yet this one small group continues to plan, just in case it ever become necessary.

Religion

The Thruer do not truly follow a god or religion but rather follow a series of beliefs and moral codes. These beliefs were instituted by the Founder, and as such, she takes the place of a pseudo deity to her people, though she does not allow them to worship her. Most of these beliefs and ideologies surround the prevention of violence and alleviation of the kin’toni’s inherent bloodlust. Each practice contributes to these goals in different manners, but all have a purpose. The overall ban and hatred of violence is a logical one. Upon the Founder’s turn, she was horrified at her new urges and what they forced her to do.

She was of course not the only one who felt this way, and she and her followers swore off violence, through any means necessary. Before her turn, the Founder was a member of the government who was dedicated to preventing the brewing war, and only volunteered for the experiments as she believed they were the easiest way to enhance people and make them too powerful to need war any longer. The main method that the clan believes helps them prevent violence is finding and following their passion. They believe that when their passion and need is poured into something other than violence, their compulsions will decline in strength and free them.

These passions vary throughout the clan. Some make art, such as paintings, others make music or dance, and some even write or read the writings of others. Another major part of their beliefs is the erasure of individuality. The Thruer clan believes that if they become one, essentially a larger being comprised of different, nearly identical parts, they will not feel the need for violence, as one kin’toni’s need would become overwhelmed by the stability of the rest of the clan. In pursuit of this, they wear identical clothes at all times, eat the same foods.

And take turns doing the same chores and duties across the clan, in order to assure they all practice and have experience with the same things. This aspect of the clan’s beliefs is what often presents the largest struggle to new members of the clan, who find it difficult to simply give up their identities as an individual. As the creator of their belief system, and founder of the clan, the Lady is treated with extreme respect and deference, though she forbids any kin’toni from worshipping her. She does not see her beliefs that the clan follow as a religion.

But rather views them as simply the best, most peaceful way for a kin’toni to live. Despite this, many members of the clan are secretly awed by her, treating her as a semi divinity, and following her every word or command without question.

Miscellany

The Thruer clan live in caves under the Noda Archipelago. These caves lead deep and far, into the waters of the ocean, and back into the mainland behind as well. Where it is deemed necessary, the caves have been supported by pillars and constructions to strengthen the roof and prevent any potential cave ins. Within the caves, each kin’toni has their own individual space. When more space is needed, iron pickaxes are used to dig out new rooms. The Thruer have iron tools. This is due to the newer members of the clan who have left other clans to join the life of peace.

And brought metal working skill and knowledge to the Thruer, teaching them how to mine and make better tools. These tools were invaluable to the Thruer clan and advanced them greatly. These new members brought much more than just that. Some brought construction methods, allowing for the construction of buildings that can make life much easier above ground during the day. Others brought cooking and fire, teaching the clan how to use fire to cook and make food taste better. The Thruer make great use of farming. They own and take care of large herds of beasts, which they use as a humane source of blood.

They have created a painless way to draw blood from their livestock, and ensure they have no need to fear cravings for blood. Despite the large number of animals they keep, they very rarely use them for meat. They refuse to kill any of the herd, and will only take the meat of one that died from natural causes. They also have large fields of various crops, which they carefully watch over and tend to. This forms a large part of their diet. The other main part of their diet is fish. They quickly started building rafts and boats and learning to fish.

Over time their boats and skills became more sophisticated, and the clan as a whole became very skilled sailors and fishers. Each boat typically could carry around four kin’toni, and had both oars and sails. They have a variety of fishing methods, including using nets, rods, or their very hands. It is important to them that the fish are not injured in the process of being caught, and so they are very gentle in the handling of them. They are careful to make sure nets do not get overfull and cramp the fish inside. Though they do not enjoy it, they do kill fish themselves when necessary.

As they recognize it would be impractical and cruel to wait for them to die on land.
