Litara Kin'toni Clan
History
The Litara Kin’toni Clan had decided to move to Cheque Cold Swamplands after they had been turned into Kin'toni. They didn’t want anyone to know that they had been changed, and so they had gone into hiding. While there was nothing “wrong” with them perse, they were an eccentric and outspoken clan. When they built their homes, they decided that they would be building them out of ice, as the air never truly got to be warmer, even in the summer months. These ice houses were ones that would house their beds, which were made of long grass stuffed into cloth, and their clothing.
They were a clan that didn’t believe in keeping small things as possessions and so they had none. Everything they did was outside. Meetings, eating, talking, and working was all done outside because they didn’t believe they should spend their time inside. The more time they spent outside, the more mutated their skin became. The cold air had started to eat away at their skin, and it turned blue wherever it had been exposed to the frigid air. Because of this, the members of the clan had decided that they would forgo wearing shirts. Their women would still wear bras or cropped shirts, as this was more comfortable for them to do.
Since they didn’t want to wear shirts, their skin was a darker blue color and had more texture around their middles. Just looking at this meant that you could tell these kin’toni were from the Litara Clan. They were a distinctive clan as their skin set them apart from other kin’toni. Since they moved to the cold swampland and built their houses, they had decided that they wouldn’t need to have any interaction with other clans. They didn’t want to have the other clans judge them, or take anything from them, and so they would do their best to scare them away if they were to come around.
This was never something that happened often as they had chosen their habitat and made sure that it was as far away from other clans as possible. They kept their homes on the edges of a frozen lake, and so there would be no chance that anyone would be able to come from that way. They liked this as the lake was frozen but would buckle under the weight of even the lightest kin’toni, ensuring that they would be able to see if there were any other kin’toni coming, and from which way they were coming. The Litara clan were a small clan, losing many of their members to the cold and frostbite.
Since they couldn’t feel their skin, eventually their bodies would shut down and they would pass away. When this happened, the other kin’toni would take their bodies and toss them into the forest for the animals there to eat.
The ground had always been too frozen to bury their companions, and so they would do what they could to ensure that the animals around them had something to eat.
Psychology
Since the Litara clan had intentionally isolated themselves when they found out that they were kin’toni, they only had each other to talk to. Their clan was small to start, even before they started losing people to the cold, and so there weren’t many exciting things that would happen. When there were things that would happen, the members of the clan would ensure that they were around to experience it as they didn’t want to miss anything. It could be something as small as a new animal that would be spotted near the village, and the members of the clan would spend weeks talking about it, even if they didn’t see the animal again.
The more they lost members of their clan, the more insane the rest of the members were. Since they were losing their friends and family members, they would be consumed with grief, and since they didn’t travel, or have any friends outside of the village to talk to, they would be met with the same answers, from the same people, and this would cause them to go mad. There was never anything interesting that would go on for them there, and so they would go about doing the same things each day. This caused them to be sad or depressed while they were going about their days.
Since they never left the village, they weren’t exposed to different kin’toni, and so if there ever was a time that they met one, they would come across as nervous and “weird.”While there was never much of a need to leave the village, when they would need to go hunting, they would have to go in groups so if they were to see another kin’toni, they would devise the best plan to make it seem as though they weren’t as weird as they seemed. Usually, since they looked so different from other kin’toni, the other kin’toni would avoid them anyways, always seemingly unsure of the Litara kin’toni.
Because of their lack of socialization with other clans, the Litara clan were slower to develop than other clans were. Since they couldn’t experience change within other clans, they didn’t have the resources or knowledge to “upgrade” their village, or to improve their government. This meant that they couldn’t evolve as a clan, or as kin’toni, as they didn’t have the ability to do so. While this didn’t seem like something that was worrisome, the kin’toni in the clan would find that they were bored or tired of doing things the same way each time.
They wanted or even craved change but didn’t have the knowledge to change. There were things that they wished were better, but since they didn’t have the knowledge to change anything, they were left with the same things they had been doing for the longest time. The best that they could do was continually express that they were unhappy with something, as none of them were able to figure it out.
Biology
As it had been previously stated, the Litara kin’toni had developed blue skin on most of their bodies because of how they had succumbed to the cold. They hadn’t wanted to wear too much clothing as they thought they didn’t need it. They believed that they should just be able to become tough to the cold and adapt to be able to live in it. Because of this belief, they had stopped wearing their clothing unless it was pants (men) and skirts (women). This was something they thought would set them apart from other kin’toni in the way that they were “stronger” than them for being able to withstand the cold.
However, what they didn’t account for was the fact that they weren’t strong enough to withstand the cold and wet temperatures, and so they would end up passing away from hypothermia and frost bite. It was believed that the more blue or black their skin was, the stronger they were at withstanding the cold. They hadn’t realized that it was a bad sign until they noticed some of their clan members passing away from the cold. This should have caused widespread panic to be caused within the clan, but instead, they decided that they would have to be stronger than the kin’toni that had passed away.
There were some members of the clan that believed that if they cut off the extremities that no longer worked because of frostbite, that they would be able to extend their lifespan. What they hadn’t accounted for, was that they would get frostbite in their wounds while they were healing, and this would cause them to gain infections and pass away faster. Since they didn’t have the technology to help heal the wounds, there were many times that when a kin’toni would survive an amputation, they would be left with an ugly scar, after the wound would take far longer to heal than it should.
Aside from the obvious scars the kin’toni had, and their blue skin, the members of the Litara clan also brandished dark red eyes. These were from the cold weather as well, as the wind would scratch and beat at their eyes, turning them red. As well, the Litara clan had a harder time seeing, as the cold kept them from being able to open their eyes as much. Even when they were in the warmth of their homes, they were forced to keep their eyes closed. This was because they were so used to keeping their eyes partially closed while they spent their time outside, and so when they spent time inside, they would naturally keep their eyes closed.
As well, opening them more would cause discomfort and, in some cases, their eyes would bleed. Since they had such limited vision, they wouldn’t be able to see things that were in front of them, and so they would be clumsy and trip over things that were not clearly marked.
Culture
Because of the way they were with not wanting to leave their village, the Litara kin’toni didn’t have many things that they would do with their time. They would spend the time they had doing the same things over and over each day. Since their village was so small, there weren’t many tasks that needed to get done through the day. Because of this, there were things they would come up with to pass their time. Some of these things included seeing who was able to withstand the cold water the longest, who was able to drink the most blood without getting sick, and who was able to get more clan members to believe a story that they told.
While they were competitive kin’toni, they did like to see who was “the best” at doing things to see who would be able to be the strongest in their clan. Because of these small tests to see who the strongest was, they would essentially become leaders of the clan, and the other members would follow them to see if they could learn how to be stronger as well. This meant that they had formed a sort of club of sorts, and the stronger ones would be the leaders. They would delegate tasks that they believed needed to be done in a certain amount of time, and they would say that if the other kin’toni did them, they would be able to be as strong as the other kin’toni.
However, these things didn’t always work, and there would be members of the clan that would be skeptical of the tasks that were supposed to make them stronger. Other than their “strongest” members that were essentially leading their clan, there wasn’t much else that would go on within the Litara clan. They didn’t have many things that they would practice, aside from not wanting to wear their clothes. This was something that they did often, as they believed that their clothes would just get in the way, and that if they were to wear clothes, they would not be able to be as strong as they could be.
One other thing that they did, happened when members of the clan passed away. When this would happen, they would take their bodies to the forest nearby and they would sacrifice them there. This was in part because they wanted to hold a small ceremony for their fallen kin, but also because they couldn’t bury their clan member since the ground was frozen. So instead, they would take the body out into the forest. They would say a few words about their friend, and then they would set them down, and score their bodies so that some blood came out.
This would attract animals to come and eat their body so that it was seen that they were remembered. They believed that the faster an animal came to eat the body of their clan member, the more liked they were and that was something they looked forward to when they died.
Government
Since they were a secluded clan, there wasn’t much need for a strong government. They had no leaders, and the people they would listen to when there were decisions were made, were the self-proclaimed strongest kin’toni. While they weren’t the leaders of the clan, the other members wanted to follow what the strongest said, as they believed following them would mean that they would be able to be stronger. This wasn’t true, but since they were so secluded, there was nothing stopping them from believing it. Before they moved to Cheque Cold Swampland, they had been a happy clan.
They had strong beliefs and they would regularly exercise their right to be heard. If there was ever something they needed, they had no issue with bringing it up and demanding there be change. As zu’aan, they were happy with their village, with their families, and with how their society was. This changed as soon as they became kin’toni however, and so they decided that they would seclude themselves. When they had first left, they had decided that they would try and continue their ways with their laws. Eventually they decided they didn’t want to, and so they abolished most of their laws.
They went along with their lives, as there wasn’t much need for the laws that had kept them safe from the other clans. Eventually, the Litara clan started to see that because they were so far secluded from any other clans, that they wouldn’t need any laws or any leaders as they did before. This meant that they wouldn’t have to worry about council meetings, town meetings, or appointing other kin’toni to be the leaders of their clan. This left them listening to the strongest members, and as they continued to lose members of their clan, they had resulted in going further into madness.
With there being less and less members through the years, the rest of the clan had gotten closer and closer to each other, resulting in them being tightly knit. While this should have been a good thing, they didn’t always get along, but without laws being in place, there was nothing that could be done. Since there were no leaders, as well as no laws, they were left to deal with things on their own. This would result in many fights, as well as members shunning each other. While the fights wouldn’t be physical, there were times when they were loud, and would cause other members to be wary of the ones that were fighting.
One thing that they would do in the way of “laws” to keep them safe, was watching out for each other. Since they lived in such a cold climate, there were hungry animals that would prowl around the village and try to attack the kin’toni there as they were desperate for food. This was also because the Litara clan would feed their dead members to the animals as a form of ritual to say goodbye to them.
Military
The Litara clan, having been secluded for so long, really had no idea what they would need an army for. They were a small clan, and they had kept themselves for so long that they didn’t feel the need to train themselves to fight. Prior to leaving their old village, they hadn’t had an army, but they were proficient in different combat styles. They would use these to ensure that they were safe if an attack occurred. The style of fighting that they used the most was mixed martial arts. They would use their bodies as their weapons as they didn’t believe that they should use weapons on other zu’aan.
They would challenge the other members to duels where they would use their expertise of fighting to ensure that they would win the fights. Sometimes because of this, the other villages would ask for tips on fighting as they saw how well the Litara would do it. It was a way for the Litara to make contacts and friends as well. This all worked well for them until the Shattering hit, and the Litara clan was turned into kin’toni. While the Litara clan didn’t have to leave and seclude themselves, they didn’t want to end up having their minds be corrupt from a disease that they had no information on and end up using their fighting skills to hurt other kin’toni, or even zu'aan.
Because of this, they decided that they would leave and pursue seclusion to ensure they would keep themselves and others safe. They would use their skills when they would go hunting to ensure their hunts were clean. They would do what they could to leave the zu'aan alive so they could minimize how many killed. They would make sure to take just enough blood to survive, and then they would go back to their village. When they did go hunting, they would do their best to knock out their victims before they would take their blood so there was less of a chance that they would recognise the members of the Litara clan.
Since they were a very recognisable clan, they did what they could to ensure they would not be seen. Because of this, there were many times when they would meet and talk about how they should knock out their victims. Usually, their tactics would work, but sometimes the zu'aan would be left alive. The members of the Litara clan would then be able to see the horror on their faces as they would capture them and take their blood for their food. While normally they wouldn’t want to continue if they weren’t able to knock out their victims, but the hunger they felt overpowered their urge to be nice to them.
They would take what they needed regardless of their urge to be nice because it was something they needed to survive. Their trips to town were less frequent, and so they would have much more hunger than they would if they were to go more regularly.
Religion
Before the Shattering, the Litara clan had a prosperous village. They believed that there was a god that they could talk to. They had a book that they would read together as a group, and one day a week they would all meet. Everyone in the village would attend, and the rest of the happenings in the village would be stopped. They had always taken their religion seriously, and so no matter what, when they decided that they would be meeting, they stopped everything so they could meet. They had been told that they should keep some parts of their village open so that when there were passers by, they would be able to stop in at the shops they had there.
The response they had been given was that their religion was far too important to miss their gatherings for visitors to the village. The village always had flyers clearly posted when they were gathering, allowing for any visitors to know that they would be busy for the day, but that they would gladly be open the next day. While there were visitors that didn’t like it, they did understand that the Litara took their religion seriously. After they had left their village and went to the cold swampland to live, they had tried as hard as they could to keep their religion alive.
For months they had committed to following their same religious routines. They would sit down and hold their same meetings each week, talking about the Shattering and what had happened to them. They would pray that somehow, they would be given the knowledge to get through their predicament. Sadly, this never happened, and they were left to grow madder and madder until they forsook their religion. As time had had passed, they started to practice their religion less and less. They stopped praying as much as they used to, and they no longer met each week.
Eventually, the only time their religion would be brought up would be when a member of the clan had passed away and they were forced to sacrifice their bodies to the animals. There were a few members of the clan that would push the importance of praying over the bodies of the dead kin’toni to ensure that they would pass on to a new life with ease. While there were members of the clan that wanted to just toss the body and call it a day, there were others that would complain about the ceremony not going to plan, and so they would be allowed to pray over the body until they believed they were done.
Eventually, there were only a few members that properly remembered their old religion. As years had passed, the members that remembered had taken to praying in private as they didn’t want to share the religion with kin’toni that didn’t want to keep it alive. Because of this, they had changed their ways to ensure they were always able to incorporate their religion into their lives.
