Boughdyn Kin'toni Clan
History
The Boughdyn Kin'toni Clan was founded in 4E 263. It was founded by kin'toni exiles from other clans of the lands east of the Qobvoud Mountains. They gathered together for mutual protection. The proto-clan's first camp was in the Myth'ed hills, at the base of the Marish Mountain, one of the Qobvoud Mountains. This camp was just a collection of fur tents with a log wall. The camp soon became home to over two hundred and grew accordingly. The proto-clan attracted exiles, loner kin'toni, and even packs. The first leader of the clan was Zavyr.
Ze proved zir personal skill at fighting to lead by winning duels, and ze beat many others who wanted to be leader. Ze named the clan the "Boughdyn Kin'toni Clan." Soon ze learned that the Cutiausk Kin'toni Clan lived in a nearby region. The newly founded clan was to move north to the Tetryl Tundra. The Tetryl Tundra was picked because it was out of the way and no clan bothered with it. The clan's journey on foot was long and arduous. They sheltered in caves and fur tents during the day and moved at night.
The clan had to drive off Cutiausk raiding parties on the early leg of their journey until they were out of the Cutiausk's reach. While passing through the Emeusk Autumn Forest, they had conflict with the Burturbur Kin'toni Clan. The Burturbur considered the Boughdyn to be trespassers. The ambushes and raids by the Burturbur forced the Boughdyn to have to detour out of the Emeusk Autumn Forest and around it. This long route and the losses from the raids weakened the Boughdyn; as a result, the clan arrived at the Tetryl Tundra over a year later.
After the journey to the Tetryl Tundra, the clan started building a large camp. This camp consisted of fur and hide tents inside an ice wall. There was a stone keep for the Rycgnosl, the clan's government. The clan came into conflict with the local packs who considered the clan to be rivals for food. The groups were hunted and given the choice to join, or die. After a few years, they managed to clear out all local packs. In the Shattering, the clan's main problem was food. The far north had few kin'toni clans, but food was rare.
The harsh land was their main foe. The clan only had to deal with straggler packs and bands kin'toni-wise. Such groups' members were given the choice to run, die, or join the Boughdyn. To deal with the lack of blood, the clan used a mixture of harsh rationing and hibernation. This allowed them to survive the Shattering. As of 4E 500, the clan felt strongly the effects of the incoming Ice Age. Their food supplies dwindled, and more and more members chose to go into hibernation. Those that went into hibernation hoped to wake in a less harsh time.
The members who stayed awake fruitlessly warned more southern clans of the ice age. The clan moved to a vast cavern lit by bioluminescence under the ice to survive the cold.
Psychology
A famous Boughdynse kin'toni named Xumon Aerinis laid the foundation for Boughdynse psychology by doing tests on more than a dozen of her clan. After several days and nights of intense study, she concluded that when Boughdynse kin'toni interact with each other they tend to be friendly to themselves; however, she also concluded that when interacting. With other clans, they speak in their more common language, Mynwan, as opposed to interacting with one another in their secret language of Boughdynan. Throughout Aerinis's lifespan, which lasted for more than 250 years, she became interested in learning how the Boughdynse kin'toni functions and retained that interest until her death.
Her studies were revolutionary in defining how the Boughdynse kin'toni lives, and years after her death, Boughdynse kin'toni still use her theories and conclusions to determine how the typical Boughdynan lives and breathes. Several of her theories, which are still being used to this day, best explain how one functions. One theory is the Mind-Body Paradigm (or the Qafjro). In which the molecules and nuclei of the brain team together with organs and cells throughout the body to help the nanobots inside the body keep it young and vibrant. A second theory, the Paradox of the kin'toni'ati Soul (or the Njmu Tranxinz), explains that while the Boughdynse sleeps during the day their internal organs can go into recharge mode.
They must do so in complete darkness; in other words, Boughdynse kin'toni must sleep underground to avoid light during the day so that their organs can prepare them for the night ahead. Her least-known theory, the Night Feast Equilibrium Effect (or the Fgnorix Qro), is highly studied and observed by other Boughdynse kin'toni in order. To determine modern problems and solutions within the Boughdynse kin'toni. It is expressed in this theory that for Boughdynse kin'toni to keep themselves from starving at night they must bite gently into the neck of a bear-like animal with wings called the Zxokcik twice each night before dawn, once at nightfall, and then again at dusk.
Many kin'toni in this clan has as traits: Dogmatism, a personality trait associated with a tendency to habitually, arrogantly assert opinions, sometimes with little regard to evidence. Egotism is a kin'toni of this clan often have, this means that you think the world revolves around you and that you believe you are more important than you are and resilience, this is the positive capacity of people to cope with disappointments, stress and catastrophe. It is also used to indicate a characteristic of resistance to future negative events. Many kin'toni in this clan have some or all of these traits
Biology
The Boughdyn are adapted to the cold, windy, and icy Tetryl Tundra. Their builds are compact and robust, with thick dense muscles. This is to lower heat loss in the freezing environment. Their skin is white, but it is not visible under their thick, long coats of white fur. This fur has a fluffy undercoat, and a layer of long guard hairs above that. The coat has oils to make it water proof. It protects well from the cold, but leads to overheating in warmer environments. Under their skin, there is an thick, dense, highly specialized subcutaneous fat layer.
This acts as an insulator against the frigid temperatures. The clan's members have long white, thick hair, forming a large mane. Their eyes are brilliant ice-blue in color, and have an thick, transparent nictitating membrane to protect from snow blindness and harsh, reflective light. Their ears are short, flat to the head and pointed, and filled with thick fur. Their noses are small, with tight sealing and complex internal passages lined with vascular tissue to warm incoming air.
Their senses have the adaption of being able to lower energy expenditure by being temporarily diminished when not actively tracking prey. This leads to an lower awareness of their surroundings. The teeth are short and blunt, and adapted to be highly durable. These teeth are adapted for crushing bones, frozen and non frozen alike as to get out the marrow and sequestered blood. The jaws are thick, with large amounts of dense muscle to aid in crushing the bones. Their claws are short, thick, shovel like and heavily mineralized.
These claws are used to dig though packed snow and ice as to be able to find sheltered prey and dig short term dens. Their arms and legs are short and thick, with dense muscle adapted for digging though snow and ice. The downside of this is that they are not fast runners, being adapted for strength, not speed. The blood flow in their bodies is arranged in a counter-current system, adapted so that cold venous blood is warmed warmer arterial blood and once it reaches the core, a special heat producing organ in the core, the then warm blood is sent out in the arteries.
The blood vessels lack the normal swelling of kin'toni blood vessels, maintaining smaller vessel diameter to prevent loss of heat. The blood vessels are deep under the skin as to prevent heat less. Their blood is chemically altered as to remain a liquid with low viscosity even at sub-zero temperatures. This is to allow for efficient circulation. Their bodies create large amounts of protein-like substances, in particular, glycerol as to lower the freezing point and prevent ice crystals forming in the cells.
The hemoglobin recycling glands are adapted to be hyper-efficient as to maximize the energy and caloric yield from eaten blood. This is to compensate for the high energetic demands of insulation. The clan have the ability to enter a deep torper during severe blizzards or periods of extreme cold. To enter this torpor for more than a few months, they have to drink blood to fatten up. The clan's main weakness is the fact that their extensive insulation, vital for survival in the frozen tundra, leads to overheating in warmer climates and strenuous activity.
This can cause Hyperthermia and even death.
Culture
Boughdynse kin'toni are often very unique as a clan, but sometimes strange, for example, when it snows outside, one can see large groups of Boughdynse kin'toni gather and dance around the snow, while some perform rituals that were also performed by their kin'tonin ancestors—but the catch is that the rituals of their ancestors involve a marching of legs and the flailing around of the arms. Sometimes when it's raining frozen raindrops, a Boughdynse kin'toni can be seen burying oneself in the snow, then emerging from it after the freezing rain has stopped falling. Because it stays at such a low temperature in this part of Terael the lakes and rivers in Jakiau stay frozen.
Allowing the glaciers on the frozen water to serve as a Boughdynse kin'toni's dwelling. As many as three dozen Boughdynse kin'toni can be housed in the glaciers at one time, with most or all of them being able to move around. For this clan entrance into their glacial dwellings is fairly easy as there is a gap between two sides of the glacier that is wide and tall enough for one to pass through. Most Boughdynse kin'toni can build houses of ice either on their own, for others, or with others; some, however, need a little help. In Boughdynse culture, it is common for a group of kin'toni to live together in a house of ice, as some houses of ice can hold up to a dozen kin'toni.
Some of the kin'toni that house together in one household can sometimes bury themselves in the snow to keep cold while others are sleeping. In some cases some of the kin'toni bury themselves in the snow while asleep to avoid the rays of sunlight, but when night falls all of the kin'toni awake from their slumber and exits their ice houses to look for something to eat or drink. During the night they must feed on a bear-like creature with wings called the zcokcik, but must do so gently and on one of the zcokcik's legs. When it's nightfall, one belonging to the Boughdynse clan can tend to get a little thirsty.
As they wander around Jakiau looking for fresh blood to drink; their best source of blood intake is the Zxokcik. By biting gently into one of its veined legs, the Zxokcik will start to lay down; when it begins to stand back up, it shakes its free leg to remind the Boughdynse kin'toni that feeds on it that the feeding process is complete and like all animals on Terael, the Zxokcik's bite marks heal at an incredibly fast rate due to constant and frequent cell growth within its body. After the dusk feeding, the most important time of the night comes as most of the Boughdynse clan's activity is done during this time. When not involved in a mission they will go fishing on the lakes far away from their homes.
And when ice fishing time comes, the Boughdynse will use their horned forehead to dig a hole into the ground to look for fish and dump their heads into the water; however, since their eyes can see perfectly in water, they can easily see and capture a kin'toni'ati fish known as the fsjorgn with their foreheads and eat them. They fish with their horned foreheads. They start by using the horn on their foreheads to dig a hole in the frozen water; once this is done, they insert their heads into the water and look with their waterproof eyes for fsjorgn (kin'toni'ati catfish); when they see something in the distance, they then wait for the fsjorgn to come within a couple of feet of them.
They then lunge for the fish and use their sharp teeth to bite it. On social occasions, Boughdynse kin'toni that meet with each other will often greet each other by gently clashing horned foreheads once to signal their start of the conversation. When they finish their conversation, they will gently clash their horned foreheads with each other twice before continuing on their way. When interacting with other clans, however, Boughdynse kin'toni will often learn and engage in other manly greetings and salutations from their other cleanly counterparts.
Government
Like many of the kin'toni'ati clans, Boughdynse kin'toni doesn't believe in mass government. That's why they have their clan government, which is called the Rycgnosl. Each member of the Rycgnosl plays key roles in the survival of their clan, including making a declaration of action—or a xewyx—and voting on whether or not that action should be considered. In Boughdynse politics, there are 50 council members, each of them being dubbed a qyncyz. Every five years they hold an election to determine a leader, secretary, and treasurer; in kin'toni'ati culture they are known as the Zyclos, Crylos, and Zyzlos, respectively.
Each of their roles as leaders of the council that governs this clan of kin'toni is different in many ways, but at the same time are very similar in certain varying aspects. The following information in this section will explain their roles. First up is the Zyzlos. The Zyzlos is the treasurer of the council and is responsible for managing, printing, distributing, and redistributing a kin'toni'ati currency known as the Vampyrlar in all areas of the Jakiau region. The Zyzlos is also responsible for meeting with the council to discuss whether or not to raise or lower the overall value of the Vampyrlar and by how much, or whether or not to keep it at its present currency value.
These meetings are often made through a simple vote. Next is the Crylos. The Crylos is the secretary of the group and is responsible for conducting meetings with the council to determine what laws go into effect and how. The Crylos also meets up with the Zyclos and informs him of any law the council itself passes during said meeting. The Crylos is also responsible (to a degree) for the election of replacements for councillors who have fallen ill or have been removed from the council as a result of controversial or uncommon actions. The Clyvro also has the opportunity to determine whether the cost of things should rise, fall, or stay the same and that in turn determines the overall value of the Vampyrlar.
He also meets with other treasurers from other clans from surrounding regions near the region of Jakiau to determine how to distribute the money to other clans. (side note: in this part of Terael, the kin'toni'ati currency is the Vampyrlar.) And finally, we have the Zyclos. The Zyclos is the primary leader of the council and is responsible for many things. The Zyclos is responsible for having the final say in determining whether or not a law proposed by the council will take effect. He is also responsible for holding separate meetings with the Crylos and the Zyzlos to determine what must be done to keep the land of Jakiau safe and sound.
There is also the Quyvro, he holds the responsibility of assembling clan government meetings and informing the Tyvro of any writs of legislation that the Quyvro itself comes in contact with. He is also the primary judicial leader of the Boughdyn clan as all major cases and disputes go directly to him, and it is also he that determines the ruling or final judgment as it regards said cases or disputes. He is also responsible for electing and removing law enforcers or, Zygapliq mux as it concerns how the region of Jakiau is secured and finally, the Tyvro, the main leader of the council, determines the fate of all laws that the Quyvro sends to the desk.
The Tyvro also rules on certain codes of conduct that are either violated or ignored, which determines either the innocence or guilt of the accused Rycgnosl official(s). The Tyvro is also responsible for determining the election of Rycgnosl candidates, as well as in enacting a vote from the entire Rycgnosl, which includes ten officials, or emxtls.
Military
Several thousand years ago several Boughdynse kin'toni teamed together to form their military—something that the Boughdyn clan didn't originally have during their rise to power and before their downfall. This group of kin'toni agreed that there would be four branches in this military and that those who enrolled would be given a shield made of wood and a sword made of stone. Each of the branch's leaders is known as raqzin (or raqzi for singular terming). Some soldiers serve in these branches, and each one is known as a wkxerin. A typical wkxerin also applies for this clan's military (or, Tmiqraz, as the Boughdynse call it) and must undergo a series of physical and mental examinations.
Those that enrol in this military would also be subject to a series of physical and mental evaluations that test their overall abilities, such as strength, loyalty, and manhood. The first of the four main branches, the Quornif Nglir, deals mainly with physical exercises and tests of strength; it also requires certain amounts of stamina for certain tasks that are to be completed throughout the Jakiau region. Nonetheless, routines in the Quornif Nglir can at times be more of a psychological test than it would be a physical test as those that enrol in this branch often find that their mind is being tested every day.
Furthermore, those that take part in this branch must cope with fatigue and tiredness as the exercises prove to require lots of stamina and time out of the day. The second branch in the Boughdynse military, the Zcnyr Aqlzin, focuses primarily on mental and psychological evaluation and mental exercise, as to be in this branch of the Boughdynse military one would have to have an incredible reach distance, which is measured by how far one can stretch their arms while sitting down. Yoga and meditation are routine exercises in this branch. There are two main leaders in each branch: one of these leaders oversees all activity in the branch and looks for potential missions to embark on.
The other oversees all activity surrounding the branch in which they lead. But they also direct all of the branch's exercises and determine what time said exercises are done. Finally, one can be promoted in this military depending on how dedicated they are to the exercises they take part in, as well as how they use their stamina. In the third main branch, the Exzm Vutu, Boughdynse soldiers engage in physical exercise and activity, such as running, squats, and jumping jacks, march around the region of Jakiau's borders to look towards protecting it from outsiders, and building houses of ice and snow.
They also have and make in their own time distinct shields of crystal and test them by determining its permeability and resistance to penetration and in the fourth branch, the Ytryinaquis, Boughdynse soldiers use spiritual elements and combine them with physical exercises such as yoga and meditation. For every thirty-minute session of meditation, they will generally do a few minutes of rigorous crunches and sit-ups to keep their bodies in top condition. By performing meditation and yoga rituals, they are better able to protect themselves and much more encouraged to defend their homeland.
One can get promoted in the Tmiqraz depending on their abilities to show leadership, dedication, and loyalty; those three aforementioned qualities are usually what determines whether or not a wkxerin gets a promotion to a higher rank or not. There are also other ways that a wkxerin can get a promotion in the Tmiqraz, such as going on missions with the rest of the troop and participating in ancient rituals; those ways also determine one's promotion or lack thereof.
Religion
Boughdynse kin'toni isn't all that fond of religion, and don't discuss it with other clans very much; in fact, they and their ancestors have been keeping their religion a secret for many generations. One of these religions of theirs, called Vyrism, is a faith in which a believer is said faith believes in the presence of a spirit that lives inside their somewhat immortal bodies. Another kind of Vyrist, known to Boughdynse kin'toni as a Qonxrist, believes in the presence of a soul that lives inside their somewhat immortal bodies and is governed by an ancestral deity that lives both inside their soul and outside their world as a sort of electromagnetic shield.
Vyrist and Qonxrist beliefs are very straightforward, with most of these beliefs sharing the same ideological qualities and some having contrary aspects; for example, while Vyrists and Qonxrists believe that the soul will never perish if it is outside their body, it is the Vyrist that believes that once a soul is penetrated, it vanishes into thin air and is no more — yet, the Qonxrist believes that while this is true in a kin'toni'ati aspect, the penetrated soul can be replaced by an alternate soul that enters their body only through prayer. Vyrists and Qonxrists have often congregated with each other in the past.
And in reality, get along quite well when congregating or attending a worship ceremony together; the main difference, however, is the differing beliefs between the Vyrist and the Qonxrist over whether or not to believe in a god or whether or not a god exists within the plane of their religions. That's why it is important to remember that while Vyrists don't believe in the existence of a god, Qonxrists believe that the same is contrary to their beliefs. Some ice houses are often painted in gold to symbolize congregation and worship, as groups of Qonxrists and Vyrists go inside the gold-coloured ice houses to pray.
Sometimes a religious Boughdynse kin'toni will pray nonstop for up to several hours at a time before exiting the ice house of the congregation. Yet, there are other religious Boughdynse kin'toni that will spend as little as several minutes at a time engaging in prayer to either the spirit that lives inside them or the deity that guides the spirit that lives inside them. Their religion involves rich mythology and worship is joyous individual prayer in public temples. Their holidays Celebrate great rulers, the harvest, full moons, saints, prophets, new moons and major Holidays: involve pilgrimages to important sites.
Miscellany
Like zu'aan beings, Boughdynse kin'toni, just like all kin'toni'ati clans, has names and ages, and they operate on a time scale known as the Nuaya, used in the clans home region. In this medium, a minute lasts for thirty seconds, an hour lasts for thirty minutes, a day lasts for ten hours, a week lasts for eight days, a month lasts for six weeks, a year lasts for ten months, and a decade lasts for ten years. Also, keep in mind that the time zone system varies from region to region. A Boughdynse kin'toni's main clan allies are the Vytheri Kin'toni Clan and Xfaxa Kin'toni Clan as they reside in colder areas around Terael, with at least one region nearly bordering Jakiau.
And every year the governments of the Boughdyn, Vytheri, and Xfaxa clans gather together at a cold, polar location to discuss plans for the future of their clans and the kin'toni'ati race. but, as the new ice age is coming in, the talks between the three clans are breaking down and the three clans are getting closer to a state of war. Some kin'toni'ati spectators from those aforementioned clans also come to witness the events unfold and finally, the region of Jakiau gets up to 30 feet of snow per year as a result of the weather in that region undergoing a constant winter, from the volcano that erupted in 4E 100
As the planet is nearing an entrance into its forthcoming ice age, the region will eventually get much more snow. Soon many kin'toni will flock to regions down south to seek food to eat. This will not last long, for there is only so much food in regions like this and there will be battles by many clans for the food there is. The clan's written language has characters are formed with jagged lines and few curves in a fairly simple style. They represent mostly sounds, as well as some concepts. Most of the characters are very close to a neighbouring kin'toni culture's writing system.
The clans' main resource is food, their main export is food and their main import is wood and lumber. In trade: imports and exports are equal. The economy of the clan is weak and declining and wealth in this clan is in the hands of the elite. The clan highly values creativity and they are known for architecture. The most popular entertainment is politics, and the most respected profession is soldiery. Discrimination is virtually none and a major taboo: eye contact. The major social ill is gangs and infidelity. The literacy rate is nine per cent and the gender ratio is ninety per cent male to ten per cent female. Life expectancy is thirty-seven years.
