Xarte Kin'toni Clan
History
The Xarte clan had rather an unfortunate origin story. They were the third clan to be formed in the city, but they were anything but willing to be kin'toni. The used to live inside the zu'aan city that is now occupied by the Parakk, Yergha and Vlakia clans. The Voont was the only clan that travelled to the city and whose members were not zu'aan inhabitants of the city before the outbreak. The Xarte were known for their adaptability and their confusingly balanced aversion to violence but passion for torture. When the infection first hit the city, very few of the zu'aan had time to organise themselves into groups, much less militia like the Parakk clan.
Most of the zu'aan were stranded either alone or with their families. Since the city was so small and overcrowded, it did not have the culture of joint families, so the families were usually nuclear with young children. Most of the zu'aan, especially those that inhabited the areas first attacked by the kin'toni, did not leave the city. For some, it was because they were scared and did not know where they would go once they left the city; they hoped that the virus would incapacitate the kin'toni before they were infected. The rest simply could not leave because they were attacked and either killed or infected by the kin'toni.
The Xarte clan was formed in the Xarte high school in the zu'aan city. The students and teachers were stranded in school when the infection hit. Some children decided to escape and try to make it home. Some parents risked the deadly streets for a chance to see their child again. The reason the entire school was infected was because of one father who fell in the latter category. On his way to the school, he was attacked and infected, but he did not realise until he reached the school and saw his own son staring at him in abject horror.
The father was driven to rage after seeing his own son flinch away from him. He grabbed his son and shook him, trying to get him to realise that it was just his father, but unaware of his own strength he caused his son to die due to injury to his internal organs. The father tried to infect his son to bring him back to life, but obviously nothing worked. Blinded by the pain of murdering his own son, he turned all the students in the school into kin'toni – no matter how much they ran or begged or fought, he hunted them down and turned them.
The students who went to their teachers for help after being infected either unknowingly infected or killed their own teachers. After a while, all that were left in the school were kin'toni. Some of the teenagers still ran from the city, a group of them managed to travel to the old Vorusk city and start a clan there with Ormis kin'toni. The kids left in the school eventually banded together and named their clan after their school.
Biology
The Xarte kin'toni clan was formed by a bunch of children and teenagers who had been turned in their own school. This was a generational trauma that was evident in the clan, even after they regained power. Since they had been young, underdeveloped zu'aan when they were turned, the kin'toni of Xarte were not very tall. However, they were much quicker than any of the other kin'toni. This was attributed to the youth of the zu'aan their body inherited when they had been infected. As young as they were, they were quite creative and they used this creativity to make their life more comfortable in the city.
Because of the alliances in the city, the Xarte knew that they bore resemblance to the Valkia kin’toni. The Vlakian eyes looked almost entirely black when not in the sun. They had incredibly dark purple irises that blended into their black sclerae and black pupils very naturally. The purple was intense and deep but only visible in direct light; in that light it was also visible that they had the vertical slit pupils of many of the kin'toni.
The Xarte had purple eyes that could clearly be identified as purple even without bright light, but the differences ended there. Their sclerae were also black, and their pupils also have vertical slits. No one could explain these similarities between the Xarte and the Yergha, and it led a lot of the clans to believe that the two clans had secret alliances and interbred to achieve similar genetics. In fact, this also caused some disputes between the Xarte and their strongest allies, the Yerghans. However, despite being shorter and thinner, the Xarte were much stronger than the Vlakia clan kin'toni.
The members had a strict training schedule, that the adopted from the Yergha kin'toni, and they put a lot of care and effort into training their bodies. They often trained for long hours in a day, and they were one of the only clans that had sports games and other athletic activities to have fun. They initially used the balls available in the school gym but when those balls were unusable from wear and tear, the clan created their own games to have fun but effective sessions. These games were often competitive, with extra blood or time off of their duties.
They had a special kinship with their teammates. These games were taken so seriously that there were special rules preventing families from being on the same team, to avoid nepotism or prejudice. The Xarte kin'toni did not take long to figure out how to reproduce, and they decided that it should be a sweet, secret ritual between the kin'toni. However, they did not have any concepts of monogamy, and families were often complicated structures of various partners living in harmony. This made it more difficult to make sure that there were no families in the same team, so the rules had to change to prevent majority ratios.
Overall, the clan was healthy as they had continuous access to blood.
Culture
The Xarte kin'toni clan was formed early on in the infection, when a bunch of children and teenagers had been hiding at school were attacked and turned. For most of them, the Kin'toni infection was the first traumatic experience they felt. This was a generational post-trauma stress that was evident in the clan, even after they regained power, and led them to fast once a month to remember it. However, as children, they bounced back quickly. They had inhabited their school and the houses nearby, but despite the space the buildings were run down. Moreover, they did not have access to electricity or tap water, or any of the luxuries they brought. Their technology was stuck in the stone ages, especially without assistance.
However, the Voont clan made life a little more comfortable for all the clans in the city. This was especially useful for the Xarte who had not faced much hardship before their infection. After all, when they had just been formed, they were merely children. It was true that the Xarte were quite random in choosing the kin'toni who could join their ranks or the zu'aan that they would infect, but all the rumours that the Xarte were cruel or unforgiving were not true. More than anything else, they were scared. They chose the people to accept into the clan based on how safe they perceived them to be.
They were more likely to accept people who looked quite young, or their friends who they had known before the infection hit the city. Still, despite their strength in numbers and their ability as kin'toni, the Xarte took a long time ot stabilise. But, they could not be blamed. They were children who did not have any idea about how to lead or organise an entire clan. There were a lot of fights amongst the kin'toni while the city was stabilising. They finally achieved a stable democratic structure when the city was stabilising. They were the first clan to reach out to other clans, despite their mistrust of other kin'toni in general.
The Parakk was obviously the only clan who received them well, but they did not immediately create an alliance with them. They were not sure what they could achieve as children. However, the Xarte took this as a challenge. They organised themselves into 2 groups, one that focused on their comfort and another that focused on ensure they could survive. As young as they were, they were quite creative and they used this creativity to make their life more comfortable in the city. They were the only clan to realise that the Yergha were stealing from other clans.
However, at this time there was no inter clan justice system, so the Xarte promised to keep this a secret if the Yergha shared the stolen blood for a while.
Government
The Xarte had a democratic government, and the roles of the office were usually time-bound. Since kin'toni lived longer than the zu'aan, they ecided that the roles of the office would last longer. the leaders held their position for ten years to maintain the stability of the clan, however that subordinates only held their positions for five to seven years depending on their ability and how the rest of the clan and receive them. However, the clan did not have a stable structure for the first few years after the infections spread.
Despite their strength in numbers and their ability as kin'toni, the Xarte took a long time ot stabilise. But, they could not be blamed. They were not sure what they could achieve as children. However, the Xarte took this as a challenge. They organised themselves into 2 clans, one that focused on their comfort and another that focused on ensure they could survive. Initially the Xarte kin'toni had to depend on themselves for their furniture. However, this changed after the Voont we were accepted in the city by the Parakk. Then, they could reach out to P for or furniture and other goods such as clothes for their wellbeing. The government structure of the Xarte in this case as the Voont respected other democracies.
The part of the government that was focused on their comfort could now change the tactics to focus on maintaining relationships with the Parakk and the Voont. The one that was focusing on the way to survive still had a lot on their hands. Since they were young, they did not have as much strength as the other Clans. is meant that hunting trips often ended in failure. However, the creativity and ingenuity of the government section focused on their survival led to the creation of their chemically increased blood supply. The government also worked towards building relationships with the Yergha.
This led to a good relationship between the Yergha and Xarte clans. They had ample space to store zu'aan comfortably for long amounts of time as they lived in the warehouse. They also learned how to heal the zu'aan by learning the work of herbs from the Voont. The Yergha also had a lot of companionship as they had been left to die by other clans and only survived on their internal camaraderie.
They decided to extend this camaraderie to the Xarte. The Yergha harvested the blood from the zu'aan safely – they had created sanitary blood extraction using the needles and sanitizer in the school infirmary. They then delivered this blood to the Xarte, who combined it with the blood and muscle from the zu'aan they hunted. Then, the Xarte propagated the blood into almost two times the original quantity.
This blood was split almost evenly between the Xarte and Yergha. The Yergha, who were talented hunters, also scavenged for fuel and burnable material, either from the warehouse or from unclaimed territories, to give to the Xarte. Thus, only the Vlakians had no strong allies in the city.
Military
The Xarte clan was not fit to have a military; after all, their population was young. They were the third clan to be formed in the city, but they were anything but willing to be kin'toni. The Xarte kin'toni clan was formed by a bunch of children and teenagers who had been turned in their own school. They had not seen the outside world and would not realize the need of a Military. There were a lot of fights amongst the kin'toni of the clan while the city was stabilizing. They did not know much about leadership, let alone about how to form a clan. They finally achieved a stable democratic structure when the city was stabilizing.
They were the first clan to reach out to other clans, despite their mistrust of other kin'toni in general, because as children they were used to having the support of adults. The Parakk was obviously the only clan who received them well, but they did not immediately create an alliance with them. They were not sure what they could achieve as children. However, the Xarte took this as a challenge. They organised themselves into 2 groups, one that focused on their comfort and another that focused on ensure they could survive. They did not realise they needed a military until the came across the Yergha kin'toni.
They were the only clan to realise that the Yergha were stealing from other clans. However, at this time there was no inter clan justice system, so the Xarte promised to keep this a secret if the Yergha shared the stolen blood for a while. This led to an alliance between the Yergha and Xarte clans. The Yergha realised that the Xarte clan was at risk without a military. Not only was the Yergha secret at risk, the Yergha were also benefitting from the Xarte's chemical abilities. In order to protect this secret, the Yergha sent some of their own members to train the Xarte and help them form a military structure.
The Xarte realised that they had to create a military that oversaw their training and safety. They copied a lot of details from the Yerghans. Other than the chemists, it was mandatory for each of the Kin’tini of Xarte to serve at least one government term (which is 6 years) in the military. However, the Xarte simply turned away anyone who asked to join their clan, instead of having an initiation like the Yergha.
Religion
Like all of the other clans in the city, the Parakk followed the Voont’s H’lla religion. Despite the fact that the kin'toni were incredibly strong and genetically superior, their life was not easy. The Xarte kin'toni clan was formed by a bunch of children and teenagers who had been turned in their own school. This was a generational trauma that was evident in the clan, even after they regained power. Their religion gave them something to believe in. The city had had a solid structure, but years of low maintenance had ruined the buildings.
The Voont ideals and religion taught them to be kind and giving and that resonated in good will with the entire city. Thus, when the Voont started practicing H’lla, the Parakk clan did as well, and the other clans in the city eventually followed, whether weeks or decades later. H’lla gained so many followers that a major temple was created near the border of the Voont territory near the forest.
The Xarte clan was the second to accept H’lla as their own, and they were the first clan after the Voont to make their own temples inside the city. The major temple had priests from every clan, practicing H’lla and praying to the goddess H’llaya all year round. However, apart from the priests, no one was allowed to enter or leave the temple throughout the year. This was because consuming blood one days before entering H’llaya’s home was considered sacrilegious. This was why the temple needed so many priests, because other than Voont kin'toni, many kin'toni could not go more than two days without blood and thus the priests constantly rotated in and out of the temple to feed while maintaining the strength of the temple.
The temple was open to the public only on the four holidays of the year – each of which was considered the start of a new season. One these days, only one delegation of kin'toni travelled to the temple from each clan, to ask for guidance and protection for the next season. Thus, the main area of worship for the kin'toni were in the temples inside their territories. These temples were considered passages to the house of H’llaya and thus did not hold the same rules of fasting. Most clans developed their own system for worshipping in these smaller temples.
However, H’lla was not the only popular religion in Xarte, they also followed Xare in which they fasted from blood for the third week of every month, which was the week when the Xarte school had been attacked. Conveniently, the two religions were complementary, and did not clash with each other, so members could practice both.
Miscellany
It was well known that the Xarte clan was made up of children, however it had been 250 years since that had occured. The other clans failed to realise that those children had long died and as the new generations came through, the playing field was levelled between the clans. Except that it was not levelled at all.
The Xarte clan knew they were the luckiest clan in the city. They had been infected in a school and they had quickly taken over control of it. They had access to books and two fully furnished libraries. They also had access to chemistry labs. Since they occupied the houses near the building, they did not even have to give up on their comfort for their possessions. Apart from that, the Xarte kin'toni had also managed to make the most beneficial alliance in the city. The Yergha kin'toni were more resourceful and caring than any of the other clans in the city, but people did not believe that because the Voont put their caring nature on display and the Parakk put their strength on display. But the truth was that the Yergha clan was better than them.
They were exceptional hunters, and they were also very good at sneaking around. They could hunt zu'aan better than all the other clans, although they eventually did not need to. They also were exceptional at gathering intel from the other clans. They were the reason why the Xarte kin'toni would be able to fulfil their plan.
The Xarte kin'toni were tired of the Parakk pretending that the city was theirs. The Vlakians were falling apart and the Voont only survived because of the Parakk. Truthfully speaking, there were actually only three clans in the city, the Xarte kin'toni, their allies the Yergha, and the Parakk kin'toni. In the eyes of the Xarte, this meant that they were in charge, well them and their allies.
Thus, they had made a plan to tear apart the rest of the city and leave only the Yergha clan and they themselves. They had considered betraying the Yergha clan but they decided against it as having the ability to make one unit of blood worth five times of food for the kin'toni, the Xarte kin'toni could not hunt. They would not need to either, if the Yergha clan was there. Even if the Yergha’s own zu'aan stock diminished, they were strong hunters more than capable of finding more zu'aan.
The plan was simple - they wanted to blow up the city. They had not dicussed this with the Yergha kin'toni yet, but they would have to eventually. The many years in the school had given the Xarte kin'toni more than enough time to read up about the city structure and about how some checmicals mixed with other chemicals could cause explosions. They knew they could get the necessary chemicals from the Yergha, and also use them to place the chemicals at logical places so that the two territories were not injured. All that was left was acting on it.
