Undal Kin'toni Clan
History
The Undal clan has always been vicious to all those who come near. They've always been closed to off even before the plague, even going as far as putting up walls and safety measures in order to keep others out. The clan is vicious in nature and barely allows outsiders as it is, the clan closest to them is the Ninal clan which occupies the springs within the mountains. The springs are on the lower half of the mountain where the Undal do not occupy so they allow the other clan to stay there as long as they stay on their own territory.
When they were zu'aan, the Undal clan were originally peaceful and had no problems with other clans around them but once the plague hit, it was as if a flip switched within their brains and they became the vicious creatures they are now. They are so vicous partly because they have an inefficient food supply. Since they live at the very top of the mountain, it is the coldest place and they find frozen zu'aan from time to time under the snow. After defrosting the sack of flesh, they feast on whatever they can from it, which isn't much, resulting in them wanting more and more each time they feed.
What started as a quest for food became an all out war with all of the surrounding areas except for the Ninal clan, who sometimes send zu'aan up the mountain to seek shelter. The war between the Tonkel clan is more of a matter of strength as the kin'toni within the Undal clan despise being weak. The war between the Polgaru is a matter of territory as they have the most land they know of that has the most zu'aan. They found that it wasn't fair that the Polgaru get that all to themselves. Behind the mountain laid the Inawar Barren Lands, housing the Nyale kin'toni clan who hated the Undal just as much as the other clans.
However, the Undal knew that there was a secret tunnel under the mountain that they use in order to trade with other clans. The Undal found trading useless when they could just take what they want, resulting in them stealing some of the zu'aan from the trade wagons. The clan did not use any weapons as their teeth were their strongest asset along with the other strengths of being a hungry kin'toni at all times. The Undal believed that they were the strongest because they had the numbers to provide power but they dind't understand why they kept losing every battle.
Their leader Unbul, was a rather large kin'toni but lost most of his brain matter before turning into a kin'toni due to others turning before him and thinking he wasn't going to make it. This results in him not being able to think rationally but knew how to fight and thought that if they proved themselves then maybe the other clans could accept them.
Psychology
The plague had not only changed their appetite but also changed everything about them. During the change, the zu'aan technically passed away, allowing the snow to penetrate their bodies and froze over most of their vital organs, including their brains. Once awoken, their brains could not function like they once had when they were still zu'aan. The majority of the new kin'toni had started feeding on the still changing bodies around them, including their leader, who had awoken during the feeding frenzy to find parts of his frozen brain in the mouths of other kin'toni around him.
He then destroyed those around him, eating those who had taken a bit out of him to heal what was left of his head. Because of the way the Undal kin'toni had awoken, they were not very smart and didn't have the ability to speak anymore. Their language consists of grunts and hand gestures. They also could not understand any other language besides their own and think that the other kin'toni and live zu'aan are there to solely attack them so they make the first move in order to show that they aren't afraid of any threat. There were some, however, who still retained the ability to speak and think as if they were still zu'aan.
They liked to be part of the clan and spoke the language they did but would go to other clans to warn them of potential attacks or what the Undal were planning. They did not, however, stop anything from happening as there was no changing their minds as it was set in their mind that everything and everyone is out to get them. There were some children within the clan that were just as ferocious, if not more, than the adult kin'toni. The children were at the front lines, trying their best to make their clan leaders and those around them happy with how well they fight.
Most fall in battle as they underestimate the might of others, especially the Tonkel clan. The Tonkel clan, in their minds, were their strongest opponent that needed to be destroyed as soon as possible. The kin'toni that retained their sanity had tried to speak with the Tonkel but was met with the same brute force that the rest of their clan has faced, forcing them to give up in trying to make peace with them. Since the snow had frozen most of their body, they do not feel pain and if they are dealt a fatal blow, their body shuts down, acting as if it were dead before waking right back up to go back to 'dying' once more.
If they are left on the battlefield and their comrades have left or retreated, the clan they were at war with know better than to leave them alone as they always seem to come back. The outlying clans that would be in a battle with teh Undal would make sure to separate the head from the body, lighting the body on fire before putting the heads on spikes to show the Undal that they would always lose. The tactic was meant to scare them off but it never worked, it just made them angrier and more power hungry.
Biology
The original clan had adorned furs and other heavy clothing to protect them from how cold it was at the tops of the mountain. When the plague initially infected the zu'aan, their bodies started to decompose within the snow, allowing frostbite to enter their bodies. Some parts of the body were affected so severely that it turned black and other parts were grey, the frostbite permanently etching itself onto their bodies.
Some kin'toni had frostbitten hands, black hands with claws that were as sharp as the icicles that hung from their caves within the mountain. It seemed that their teeth were the most prominent in the physical shifts in their body, sharpened down and sticking out of their mouths like a sabertoothed animal. Though they didn't have tusks, the ice had mainly affected the top teeth, their top lips no longer existent as each top tooth thrust its way out of their mouths, cutting into their cheeks to escape the confined space.
Their eyes were a snowy white and the rest of their skin that wasn't affected by the frostbite was a permanent cloud grey in order to serve as a type of camouflage for the snow. When wandering zu'aan would be lost in the mountains, the Undal clan would swiftly fight each other for the kill as they didn't get many fresh corpses. Since they usually devour each zu'aan they come across, they rarely ever get any new members. On the slim occasion, the new kin'toni always retain their sanity and joins the small part of the clan that can still speak and think. They sometimes stay with the clan but most leave to find a clan that can think rationally in order to survive.
Sometimes the kin'toni that could think would throw random animals they found from either along the mountainside or from the flat land just out of reach from the Tonkel range for the other clan members to eat. Most would devour it but others would turn up their nose as if they were disgusted and weren't starving. Those who refused to eat anything usually ended up the ones on fire after a battle as they fell slower after not having food for such a long period of time. Those that would go and hunt for their clan would sometimes go on the outskirts of the Ninal clan, raising their hands in surrender to show that they weren't there to fight.
Though it wasn't official, there seemed to be a one way trade with the Ninal clan. The Undal who would sometimes go too close in search for food were waved down by the Ninal members and given a few corpses for their people to feast on. The leader of the Ninal had a few conversations with the limited amount of Undal that could communicate and knew the struggle of trying to find food on their own and allowed for just a few corpses to be sent to the Undal via the hunting parties from the clan on the mountain.
Culture
The zu'aan Undal clan had exported their fur coats and clothing to those who had wanted them, no matter how far other clans were. The furs were mainly compiled of the animals who were originally native to the mountains. The business was a boom and the zu'aan Undal clan lived comfortably as trade brought in the money, food, and anything else they needed. When the plague hit, the Undal clan fell to ruin. The trades they once had were now destroyed as the Undal clan members were now too far gone to even think about trades. The clan was now in utter chaos with just a few members who had their own minds under control.
Though they could speak, their words fell upon deaf ears as the new kin'toni Undal clan wanted nothing but destruction to those around them as everything was now a threat to their existence, even when the sane members knew that no one was out to get them. The kin'toni had no real way of speaking with other clans unless the specific few get permission from the clan leader to do so, which would never happen as the clan leader was just as delusional as the next Undal member. The grunts and hand gestures used by the clan turned into their new language over time.
And some of the other clans had gotten used to so many signals during attacks that they knew what some of them meant. The sane members could speak the same language and could speak with the other kin'toni within their clan but found that the entire clan was now back to barbaric ways as no one within the clan had an ounce of intelligence left, save for a few who had most of their brain still intact but still spoke the new language instead of the old. The clothing they once wore were no use to them anymore, resulting in some of the members being completely nude without having a second thought.
Most of the others wore tattered and ripped furs, most of which were from the damage of the initial kin'toni ripping apart the others in order to get the first taste of their new food source. Select few, mostly those who still had their sanity wore full outfits even though they didn't feel the cold anymore. The sane were embarrassed to be seen with their clan which is why they don't participate in the battles that commence almost every day. The Undal know of trade routes that go through their mountain, resulting in them going down to steal some of the zu'aan corpses in the shade of the tunnel that the traders are using.
Sometimes the sane Undal are waiting at each entrance of the mountain to warn others about what they're going into to see if they could deter the merchants from getting their product stolen. Most listen to them but others take their chances and end up missing a few of stock, which is why for the next time they try to go through the tunnel, they heed the words of the Undal who know what they're talking about.
Government
There is no government within the Undal clan as they cannot comprehend the meaning of one anymore. There is a leader named Unbul who had most of his brain matter eaten while turning into a kin'toni himself. Out of all the kin'toni within the clan, he was the strongest as he retained all of the muscle mass that he once had when he was zu'aan. Those who can fight and those who can't...that is the way the Undal consider others useful or useless. They only care about how much power they have and how they can show off to others to make them realize how powerful they are.
Of course, the only thing noteworthy of the Undal clan to others is how persistant they are and how they don't die until their heads are separated from their bodies. They do not have any currency but they do know how to trade with one another, not with other clans. Those who still had their brains knew that they were once traders that didn't allow anyone within their encampments as they didn't trust anybody. It goes to show that they still do not allow anyone or anything into the encampment ever since the plague broke out.
It's a well known fact to all of the surrounding areas that if something were to happen to Unbul then the entirity of the Undal clan would destroy itself because it's leader wasn't there to make himself known to be the best. Unbal was the chief, the leader, the judge, sherrif and executioner and he made sure to let every single kin'toni know it. The reason that every single clan has animosity toward the Undal clan is not only for the constant attacks but also because of how prideful Unbul is. He mocks each clan, almost purposely to build animosity with them.
With his childish views, Unbul does purposely try to make people look at him but doesn't understand that with the constant fighting, they view him negatively rather than positively. like he wants. The Undal who can still think seem to have their own circle within the clan who deal with the other clans who feel sorry for them and give them corpses for them to feed on. They don't mean to withdraw the pity out of others but they try their best to warn the different clans around them about the Undal plans and when they're going to attack. The ones who can communicate, act as double agents, but all they want is to not be embarrassed by their own clan and want to be useful to other clans.
Talks of a cure are never present unless it's spoken with between the sane kin'toni within the clan. They think they would take the cure but if the rest of their clan turned back into zu'aan then there would be no way that any of them would be still living or even have a brain to know right from wrong, which, in their eyes, wouldn't be such a bad thing.
Military
Each Undal clan member believes they are the strongest within the clan as there is a battle that commences every day. Each member likes to show off their 'skills' to both other clan members and other clans in general. The entire clan, less those that have a brain, is the military. Because they can't die without having their heads cut off, each kin'toni within the clan can fight for several days regardless of the wounds they have attained as they cannot feel pain. The residual energy of the frostbite was causing them not to feel any pain and could allow them to continue moving after critical hits have been dealt.
They only truly die when their heads are ripped from their bodies and their bodies set aflame so they don't have it to reattach to. When the clan strikes up a battle, the only things that are agreed upon are the clan they are going to attack as well as a time frame of when it's going to happen. Though they attack as one unit, they do not have the teamwork to make any progress, which is why they lose so many battles. During some battles, Undal are mad with rage and sometimes attack their own, resulting in others thinking they're the enemy and also start to turn on fellow clan members.
On the battlefield, it's usually a mess that gets the members killed, not only by each other but the other clans as well. The other clans fight on a daily basis with the Undal clan and know very well that they can easily be turned onto one another with a simple trick that's been passed along from many of the neighboring clans. Dressing up as an Undal and attacking one member would spark the self destruction, provided that the imposter makes it out with their head. Other clans have found that they can avoid lengthy battes if they go through with trying to be the same as the Undal, though others like to fight with them.
The Tonkel seem to love fighting with them because it shows how superior they are to them, which only enrange the Undal even more as they continually lose to a clan who has more power than they do. The Undal hate anything and everything including the other members of their tribe when differences in how the tribe deals with things arise. The Undal that can think rationally frequently try to tell the others about what is going on down the mountain but the others either don't want to hear it or misunderstand and take it as a threat.
Though the intelligent Undal do not want to speak with the rest of their clan they had found that sometimes the clan talks in their own language about going and doing something that they would surely die as a reult of. The intelligent ones were usually disregarded and told that they should join another clan because they didn't need the losers telling them things that weren't true.
Religion
The Undal clan had strongly believed in the spirit of the mountain when they were zu'aan. They believed that the spirit of the mountain, who they named Jas'olu, protected them from the severe snow storms that would frequent the top of the mountain they resided in. They believed that Jas'olu gave them a good fortune if they worshipped him each morning in the temples they built within the mountain side. Jas'olu then blessed them with healthy lives and children, allowing families to withstand the freezing temperatures. They were able to have a loving community that thrived in the harsh conditions both inside the mountain and outside of it.
When the plague hit, some kin'toni had the ability to remember him, mostly those who retained their memory but there were a select few who also had the ability to remember him. They were saddened by the fact that they had been so affected by the plague because they were always so diligent when worshipping Jas'olu. They still pray and worship him in order to hope that a cure would come soon so they could be happy again, even if it meant that most of the clans would die off due to their poor memory and physically missing most of their brain.
They pray and they still receive blessings in the form of food and the very fact that they have the ability to withstand many wounds all at once without doing. Some of the Undal believe that Jas'olu knew about the plague and knew that it would come. They believed that he gave them the abilities that came with turning into kin'toni, making them not lose faith in him even though most would assume that they were being punished. They believed that he allowed them to keep their lives in order for them to keep believing and worshipping him, to which they graciously accepted the terms in order to survive their new way of life.
Some of the Undal trived in their new conditions while others continued to live miserably and blamed Jas'olu for their demise. Unbul, the leader of the clan, has tried his best to get his people to not lose hope in their Jas'olu and continued serving him in more primitive ways such as sacrificing small animals to the god in order for them to get just a morsel of zu'aan food. It never fails and it shows just how strong their religious ways are, even when they have lost the rest of their cognitive abilities.
Some of those who have retained their intelligence have come up with theories as to why Jas'olu would allow them to keep their smarts and not the rest of their clan. They believe that they had done a good job in leading the life Jas'olu had wanted them to live so he allowed them to keep their sanity in order to keep doing good to their clan. Though the rest of the clan doesn't listen to what they have to say, they still try their best to do whats right, even if it means telling the other clans about the Undal plans and to be wary of an upcoming attack.
