The Gariev Beach Meadow was a region that was a mix of meadows and rolling hills that overlooked the beaches bordering the Gariev bay. The region had some of the most pleasant weather in the entire continent and was populated by many settlers from a very early age. The first zu'aan settlers of the region would settle along the grassy meadows that were abundant with wooded sections and crop fields that provided the zu'aan with both resources for their construction activities as well as food for their survival.
The region would advance quickly through the ages and became a center of trade and art. The region was home to many large business corporations that plied their trade throughout the region, supplying weapons and armor to the rest of the continent. Many famed weapon makers would arise from the region with the most illustrious among them being Levavua Navutan, who inherited the prestigious Gariev Arms Co. from his ancestors. He successfully managed the company until the events of the kin'toni outbreak ruined most of the businesses in the region, including his.
He would become famous as the leader of the Dadeel Tribal Zu'Aan, formed after he was chased out of the zu'aan city when he could no longer afford the protection of the king. He left for the secluded forests at the edges of the Gariev meadow with a stockpile of his weapons and a contingent of his most loyal henchmen and bodyguards who would become the core fighting force of his new clan. The move saved him from a kin'toni siege that followed his departure and destroyed the Gariev kingdom and its entire city.
A mass exodus of zu'aan refugees into the countryside would soon follow, and Levavua was quick to recruit these hapless members into his new clan guaranteeing them his protection and wealth. His only condition was that these members had to abide by his laws and fully accept his authority. This new clan would find success in their defense against the kin'toni raids as they utilized Levavua's supply of arms and weapons against the kin'toni hordes to great effect. The trouble would follow soon after they had exhausted these supplies and had to find new ways to defend themselves.
They would rediscover the art of metallurgy and resort to the use of crude bronze spears along with wooden and leather shields for defense. The clan was also famous for their construction of their spiked wooden palisades that measured almost fifty feet in height and was successful in keeping away the kin'toni invaders for many years to come. These defenses allowed the clan to prosper in peace and helped them successfully navigate these turbulent times. They became famous for their professional military that was recruited from among the able-bodied members of the clan.
They were compensated handsomely for their service, in keeping with their capitalistic values. This was another feature of the clan that distinguished than most of the other zu’aan clans surviving the kin’toni outbreak. They were staunch believers of capitalism and practiced it in their everyday lives. This was inspired by their founder, Levavua- who was a successful businessman and well versed in the operation of the market. Thus, any member of the clan who could create a valuable item or provide a required service would find themselves reimbursed for their effort.
This encouraged the development of many new systems in the clan and the existence of many innovators within their ranks.
Geography
The Gariev region was an idyllic location composed of green temperate forest covered hills that slowly descended into grass covered meadows before it joined the waters of the Gariev bay. The soil was very fertile and supported the growth of a wide variety of plants and vegetation. This was witnessed by the ease with which the native settlers of the region took to agriculture and maintained it throughout the course of their existence here. The region was also filled with a wide variety of wildlife that provided the region with all it needed in terms of food and resources such as fur and bone.
Wood was easily available from the surrounding hills and the locals built much of their first settlements purely out of wood. They would quickly advance within their peaceful and idyllic surroundings and begin the mining of the rocks and stone faces within the hills which would quickly lead to the construction of more complex structures. The environment would also change around them as the old Gariev kingdom- one of the most powerful kingdoms began to build the region's grandest city.
It was filled with spires and towers that lined their skyline along with cobbled roads that weaved their way across the entire region and facilitated their trade and contact with many of their surrounding neighbors and regions. The terrain of the region was quite uniform and suitable for the riding. It was easily navigable and the people travelled mostly with the help of mounts and caravans that helped to cross the vast distances of the region. The Gariev region also contained large iron reserves that would be discovered and mined during the second era.
This led to a vast improvement in the quality of their tools as well as the quality of life in the region. The environment would begin to suffer as a result of their mining activities leading to many open and excavated sections of the earth that were filled with black smoke from all of the zu'aan's mining activities. The Gariev region experienced a temperate climate all year round and had many moderating influences such as the cool sea breezes that would blow in from the sea each night.
The seasons in this part of the world could be divided into three distinct periods- summer, monsoon and winter. In summer the temperatures would remain warm and pleasant, peaking at thirty degree Celsius during the hottest days. Precipitation was uncommon during this period and would only begin to commence once the monsoon arrived. Rainfall was regular during this period and would experience regular storms in the surrounding seas. The temperatures would begin to drop towards the end of monsoon and would lead directly to the winters when the temperatures would drop to the low twenties.
The conditions would continue to remain pleasant and the region would continue to experience adequate amounts of sunlight with a little fog and mist during the early mornings. Plants and crops continued to grow even during this season and the region retained its green appearance.
Plants
The Gariev beach meadow was home to a wide variety of vegetation that ranged from coniferous to evergreen and seasonal trees and plants. The vegetation did not have to deal with any harsh extremes and had one of the most ideal conditions to contend with. The winters were not too harsh and the temperature remained favorable all year round. The region was capable of supporting crops all year round. This led to the self-sufficiency of the region and allowed the zu'aan of the region to prosper and conduct trade with their neighboring clans.
The easy availability of trees all over the region was also critical to the construction efforts of the locals and supported the construction activities of the region. Some of the most famous vegetation of the region included the evergreen aton-skel trees, the fruit producing tonaw trees, the local norbur crops and the kuine grasses that covered most of the region's meadows. The aton-skel tree was an evergreen tree that grew in large groves that covered most of the Gariev region. The tree could grow to a height of over fifteen meters and had a large trunk that yielded a substantial amount of wood.
It was the most commonly used tree for construction in the region during the early periods of zu'aan settlement in the Gariev. The anton-skel had green leaves that would turn yellowish during the winter months. It produced wild berries that sustained the birds and smaller animals that lived among its branches. The tonaw trees were a smaller variety of trees that were cultivated in a large scale along the meadows of the region. They were a Mediterranean variety of vegetation that required very little water.
It produced many small fruits that were a common part of the zu'aan diet and were also used to produce the region's famous wine and beverages. The tree could grow to a maximum height of ten meters and had distinctive yellow lives that stood out from the distinctive green vegetation of the meadow region. The norbur was a common crop of the zu'aan settlers of the Gariev region. It was a less water intensive crop that thrived in the temperate climate of the region. The favorable conditions of the region allowed the cultivation of two crops of norbur in a single year.
The crop grew to a height f six feet and produced maize-like grains that could be turned into flour for making bread. These grains were a dark brown in color and produced darker colored bread when cooked. The kuine grass was the most common grass of the Gariev and covered more than ninety percent of the meadow region. It was a bright dark green in color and could grow to a height of five feet. The kuine grass also produced bright orange flowers that would bloom during the summers. These flowers produced a sweet nectar that could be extracted in large presses that were hand-built by the zu'aan.
The long stalks of these grasses were also used for weaving all kinds of utensils such as baskets and decorative items.
Animals
The Gariev region was filled with a wide variety of wildlife due to the favorable conditions of the region. This included cattle, mounts, domesticated farm animals and several kinds of predators that roamed the wooded hills of the region. The waters of the beaches were also filled with all manner of aquatic wildlife, from small fishes to large whale-like creatures that would come to feed in the plankton filled waters off the coast. Some of the most common animals found in the Gariev region included the rayut'l cattle that could be found grazing in the vast meadows of the region.
The gudkim mounts that could also double as pack beasts and farm animals, the irrad predators and the edani shark that was the apex predator of the waters off the coast. The rayut'l was a common type of cattle that could be found in most zu'aan households of the Gariev region. They were mostly colored in light shades of white or gold and had a soft and light fur coat that could be shaven and used to create cloaks and coats. It was mostly reared for its meat and milk which were a common part of the diet in this region.
They were fairly low maintenance and could live off the grasses that grew in the meadows. The animal could grow to a length of over six feet and weighed a hefty three hundred pounds. The rayut'l could be trained to pull ploughs and was used for many other agricultural purposes. The gudkim was a common type of mount that was commonly used by the zu'aan to get around the region. It could grow to a maximum height of over six feet and a similar size in length. It had four muscular legs that could help the animal quickly traverse the region.
The animal could be trained to pull carts and serve in caravans that carried goods to many different parts of the world. They were very highly regarded creatures and regularly featured in many of the clan's paintings, sculptures and songs. The animal had a very versatile diet and could live off both plants and meat. This made it the ideal animal for explorers when travelling to unexplored lands. The irrad were a wolf like creature that lived in the wooded hills of the Gariev region.
They lived in packs and had their own group dynamics with leaders and followers. They were fairly easy to handle individually but could turn into a nightmare when they hunted in packs. The Irrad would regularly venture into the meadows in search of prey and sometimes wander into the zu'aan settlements. They had very durable coats of soft fur that was prized in the markets of the region. The edani shark was a gigantic twenty feet predator that lived off the waters of the Gariev beach.
They prowled the region in search of food and were even known to attack many zu'aan swimmers who would wander out into open waters. The zu'aan would begin to hunt them for their meat as well as their sharp teeth and bone which could be used to carve a wide variety of tools and weapons. The animal was a dark black on top that gradually melded into the milky white of its underside.
