History

The Ildril zu'aan clan were formed by a zu'aan military commander, Ereil Xara during the kin'toni outbreak and initially consisted of survivors from a zu'aan research facility that was responsible for the research and creation of the kin'toni. Eriel had been placed in charge of the security of this research facility located within the snowy Xayau mountain ranges. She was unaware of the activities going on inside the facility and her curiosity would continue to gnaw at her until she finally mustered up the courage to explore the facility.

On that fateful night, now known as the kin'toni outbreak- Eriel would use her clout within the military to break into the restricted areas of the research facility. Using her disguise as a scientist, Ereil entered the most secretive areas of the facility, discovering the research going on into these genetically enhanced creatures who would become known as the kin'toni. She would also witness firsthand, the chaos unleashed by a negligent handling of equipment that allowed these kin'toni to escape the facility.

The kin'toni ran riot around the zu'aan's cities, spreading devastation and "turning" zu'aan that they ran into. Ereil managed to survive the outbreak holed up in a safe room along with a few scientists and security personnel who worked under her. They survived within the facility for a month before they emerged into a desolated section of the Xayau mountains. The group responded to her leadership and established a society up in the mountains that tried to replicate their zu'aan way of life.

She acted as the sole authoritarian and sometimes tyrannical leader of the clan, with a military rank-based system beneath her. She named this clan the Ildril zu'aan clan and they would go on to become one of the better organized and resilient zu'aan settlements in the region. The clan would initiate the building tall and sloped walls that were unscalable without help from the top. The imposing rock walls took over a year to complete and cemented her clan's defensive dominance of the region, once completed.

Their defenses were also bolstered by the clan's great work ethic and military. Under Eriel's rule, civil life consisted of communal activities that were carried out for the good of the community. Individualism and greed were discouraged, and every member was expected to have the clan's best interest in mind. She would instill the military discipline and order that she'd been around all her life- into the clan. Thus, helping them set up a strong military that would continue to defend their clan from all outside adversaries for many years to come.

Their strategic position helped them avoid the worst of the kin’toni attacks as the extreme cold and difficult terrain complete with rugged mountains was unsuitable for the kin’toni who avoided the region whenever they could. They received regular challenges from many zu’aan clans who wandered into the region to claim the territory for themselves. The Ildril’s military was up to the task in dealing with these challenges and would successfully navigate the worst of these attacks without any major losses.

Psychology

The Ildril zu'aan clan were known for their militaristic attitudes and their inclination towards order and discipline. They desired a regulated life where every part of their routine had a reason and purpose behind it. They responded to duty and authority and were very industrious and hardworking. Their attitudes were all a byproduct of their origins and their professions before the kin'toni outbreak shattered their former lives. Almost half of the clan were composed of researchers, scientists and helpers who worked in the labs of the research facility in the Xayau mountain ranges.

They had a deep yearning for knowledge and spent their entire lives searching for new information and knowledge that could help them improve their lives and activities. Their desire for knowledge was a major motivation for most of their activities and they would continue to pursue many research projects even after the outbreak destroyed most of the research facility and their data. This desire for knowledge would also lead to their meticulous collection of all forms of data about their enemies and terrain in anticipation of attacks and opportunities that might arise against them.

This large knowledge base made them a strategic and tactical nightmare for any army facing off against them. The other half of the clan's membership were composed of military, who had initially been assigned with Ereil to the defense of the research facility. They were accustomed to military order and highly dedicated to their duty. These men were extremely loyal to their leader Ereil and most had served under him in many of his previous campaigns including the famous battle of the Xayau basin, where she faced off against a numerically superior rival and achieved victory with the help of her superior tactics and knowledge of the terrain.

These members of the Ildril were fanatical in their trust and were willing to die for their commander if the need arose. Their mentality was among the most vital attributes that helped Ereil Xara establish a successful clan in the middle of their frosty habitat. They were used to taking orders and responded well to her authoritarian leadership style. They thought only for the collective good of the clan and individualism within this unit was highly discouraged. They were also very hardy and resilient and could withstand long days of hard labor through sheer willpower.

With their immense mental strength, the clan had nothing to fear from other zu'aan who were rarely as disciplined or as well trained as them in both combat and in regular life. The Ildril clan had a very high regard for discipline in life. They were known for their strict adherence to routine and welcomed punishment for any breaches in discipline and order. They could not stand laziness and idling and would eagerly take on more work during their free time. They created well structed divisions of labor to ensure that their work was completed in the most efficient and time-saving manner.

They had very high expectations of themselves and their fellow clan members and could become very agitated if their expectations were not fulfilled.

Culture

The Ildril zu'aan were known for their highly efficient culture which encouraged their serious nature and pragmatic approach to life. Their culture had a very unfavorable outlook towards lazing around or any idle members of the community. They believed that salvation came through work and that it was the responsibility of each individual to engage in activity and work, and be productive for the clan. Their culture prized two characteristics- knowledge and hard work. These were the characteristics most commonly required for the clan's main activities, researching and fighting.

Research had always been a part of the Ildril zu'aan clan since at least fifty percent of their members were composed of the researchers who previously worked at the zu'aan research facility in the Xayau mountain ranges. They prided themselves on their intellectual capacity and would continue on researching and collecting information about their new environment and their new enemies and neighbors. Their deep and comprehensive data helped them prepare for any attacks and sieges from any of their surrounding armies and contributed to their military and defensive success.

The clan also had a long military tradition that started from their leader, Ereil Xara who was a distinguished military leader among the zu'aan and had won many significant victories before the kin'toni outbreak. She was the victor and commander of the Xayau units involved in the Battle of the Xayau basin. Her success in this battle turned her into an overnight sensation and a household name among the zu'aan of the region. The Ildril clan continued to mark the eve of this victory through a silent lamp lit ceremony held in silence to commemorate all those who had heroically given their lives for the cause.

They were taught to be as fearless and decisive as these zu'aan who came before them, and each Ildril individual wanted to be worthy of their heroic legacy. The Ildril did not celebrate festivals, they were very stoic and did not belief in excessive revelry and hedonism. They discouraged excessive material possessions and had very functional dwellings that were very bare and only filled with their most essential necessities. The Ildril were very great at construction due to the easily available labor within their clan and their knowledge of practical physics and basic engineering.

Their most impressive structure was their tall and sloped walls- built into their mountain home to prevent any kin'toni or attacking armies from getting within their settlement. The Ildril were a very proud clan and never bothered to learn other cultures or languages. Unlike most of the languages in the region that had evolved to a commonly understood dialect, the Ildril would continue using their old languages. This hindered their ability to interact and conduct diplomacy and trade with other clans, which was not a problem since the Ildril preferred to be left alone either way.

The Ildril were a primarily meat-eating clan. Their culture had many recipes for the preparation and storage of meat, although these recipes were known to be under seasoned and very basic. Their diet was very nutritious and associated with their highly developed physical features.

Government

The Ildril zu'aan were known for their very efficient government system that was composed of a single leader at its head and the administrators, advisors and the army all under her command. This system was started by their founder Ereil Xara and has stuck with them ever since. The government was known for its very authoritarian rule which afforded very little personal freedom to the members of the clan. The punishments for breaching the clan's rules were very severe and made the government look tyrannical in nature.

The harsh nature of the government was tolerated by the members of the Ildril zu'aan clan because they were already accustomed to it. Their members were mostly composed of the military ranks who had served with Ereil Xara on many campaigns and were fiercely loyal to her while the other half were composed of the researchers in the facility who were also familiar with restrictions to their freedoms and interactions. They owed Ereil Xara for saving the clan, since her authoritarian style of leadership was vital in bringing together the many scattered groups that survived the outbreak in the Xayau research facility.

She formed them into a clan and helped them survive the tough circumstances of the kin'toni outbreak. The people responded to her leadership since she had the support of most of the military and security members and she also the only person who seemed to know what she was doing. The clan would follow her in building a highly functional society within the Xayau mountain ranges. She instilled military discipline and order into the clan. She was the sole leader of the clan with a military rank-based system beneath her.

She was heavily involved in the military activities of the clan and was responsible for the designing of the new clan's defenses. She created a system of rotational labor that ensured the non-stop building of tall and sloped walls that were unscalable without help from the top. The clan's leadership style was heavily influenced by Eriel's personality and borrowed much from her precedent. She was a proud and authoritative figure, with an aura of superiority about her that was enhanced by her smart appearance and erect posture.

She was a creature of routine and rarely deviated from it. She was a firm disciplinarian and expected complete obedience from her subjects. Despite, her harsh punishments and rules, she could also be a generous person when people exceeded her expectations. People who found favor with her could expect to be rewarded handsomely and gain quick advancements in their careers. She demanded a lot from her clan as a leader and was very hard on them. She demanded complete obedience and loyalty and prescribed very harsh punishments for any person found guilty of collaborating with the enemy or showing disloyalty towards the leadership.

She created a culture of stoicism and discouraged greed and the concentration of wealth within the clan. Most of the clan's resources were distributed equally among the members based on an individual's needs.

Military

The Ildril zu'aan clan were known for their military might and their ability to effectively defend themselves. Their military ability is no surprise given that most of their members were composed of veterans who fought in historical battles such as the Battle of the Xayau basin, led by their clan's founder- Ereil Xara. Ereil was known for her deep knowledge and experience in military tactics and strategy. She had been raised from a young age for this exact purpose. As a young girl, Eriel was brought up in the barracks surrounding her father's regiment.

She was exposed to military order and discipline, and her father personally tailored her education and training with an eye for a career in the military. She stood out from the other cadets in her class due to her bright eye for innovative tactics and a willingness to achieve success at all costs. She would gain command of her own army by the time she was twenty-five, and was involved in many conflicts of the era. After her success in the Battle of the Xayau basin, she went on to have a stellar political career where she represented a growing patriotism and militaristic faction of the government.

She eventually entered the administration and was put in charge of security of the research facility in the snowy Xayau mountain ranges. Under her able leadership the Ildril would reach the pinnacle of military organization. Their highly motivated military was regularly trained and equipped with the best weapons in the region. They were capable of holding off numerically superior enemies and were known for their discipline in battle. They were fiercely loyal to their commander and followed her commands to the death.

They were very brave and preferred to die in battle than retreat. During the kin'toni outbreak, this military would face off against many kin'toni hordes in defensive battles where they fended off the enemy from their elevated positions on top of their settlement's walls. The Ildril military had many different roles assigned to them. This helped in the organized conduction of their activities and prevented confusion and lapses. The divisions within their military consisted of light infantry or scouts who were responsible for tracking enemy movement and gathering information about the terrain- while refraining from direct confrontation.

The other two divisions, the heavy military and the ranged units were responsible for directly engaging in combat and defeating them in combat. In peacetime, this military force also served as a readily available source of labor and were responsible for the many construction activities that went on inside their settlement. Their motivated workmanship was responsible for the quick completion of many of the clan’s construction activities and helped them assemble a formidable defense in a short time.

The military also had their own maintenance crew and craftsmen who were responsible for tending to their equipment and creating new weapons. This job was fit for many of the researchers within the clan who had practical knowledge in metalwork and crafting and used their innovative ideas to improve the Ildril’s weapons.

Religion

The Ildril zu'aan clan did not have a religion and were instead known for their strict belief in duty and a rigorous adherence to their principles of duty and honor. With a large composition of former veterans within their ranks, the Ildril were known for their high regard for military values. They believed that it was every individual's responsibility to represent themselves in a manner that would bring them honor. According to these principles, it was considered disgraceful to surrender or flee from the battlefield.

Every member was expected to fight to the death unless order to flee by their commander. They had an almost religious belief of their founder, Ereil Xara and followed all her commands and orders without protest. They believed that she had their best interests in mind and would lead them through these tough times as she had during the Battle of the Xayau basin. Any person who opposed her or displayed anger and discontentment towards her ideas and orders was quickly punished and removed from the clan.

This fanatical loyalty to their leader was a form of religion from the members of the Ildril clan. They believed that their leader could do no wrong and that every decision was made for their own benefit. The Ildril believed in order and discipline. They were used to highly organized and functional routines where every member had their own individual responsibilities and each of them could be counted on to fulfil their own. They feared the chaos and disorderly conduct that was prominent among the tribal zu'aan of the region.

They were creatures of habit and had set timetables and routines for each of their daily tasks. This prevented them from staying idle while helping them stay productive for the entire day. Being idle or laziness went against all of the Ildril's beliefs. To them, idleness was a punishable crime and anyone guilty of it deserved to be punished. The punishment was followed by an opportunity to show the rest of the clan that they were capable of reforming themselves and offering their services to the clan.

If the individual failed in this regard, he or she would consequently be expelled from the clan. The Ildril believed that they were justified in performing any action for their survival of their clan. They did not follow any moral compass or the normal concepts of right and wrong. They believed that morality was a concept for the weak and had no place in their new world where only the fittest would survive. They were very shrewd and clever, and would regularly change their beliefs based on the need of the hour.

These changes would be announced by their leader. Some of the most common examples of these changing beliefs included the declaration of an adversary as a mortal enemy that had to be wiped out or orders for every clan member to participate in labor, for the good of the clan. The people willingly adhered to these changing beliefs because of their complete trust in their leader.
