Boeh Tribal Zu'aan
History
The Bogyr Thermal Terrace is a location that has very humid temperatures and used to be the home to a few residents who enjoyed its pleasant conditions. Consisting of many rivers, there is plenty of flowing thermal spring water that causes the region to be famous for a carbonate material that is left behind from this. It can also be observed that terraces are made of travertine, a sedimentary rock deposited by mineral water from the hot springs, with each spring having its own small community that depends on it; that is how the region used to function.
These small communities would all have mutual relations and work together, but saw it fit that they broke off into smaller groups with each one being dedicated its own spring as a means of preserving the valuable, vital, essential resources that could be found. On many occasions, the region was also used by holidaymakers as a way to unwind and lighten up, away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, as some of the communities were willing to use their springs as spas that could be used for relaxation.
This form of tourism also proved to be a huge aid to the economy, and soon merchants were starting to begin travelling to the region to trade as well as gain many useful, beneficial resources that were in abundance in the area – even the mineral composition of the water was seen as being advantageous. However, with the kin’toni outbreak taking place, the region soon found itself becoming more and more deserted as tourists and travellers were less likely to visit the area for the sake of leisure due to a focus on protecting themselves from the kin’toni, and hence the economy saw a huge drop.
Very soon, the inhabitants found themselves needing to be more independent, and like many other nations try their best to survive without the need of their neighbours; there would be a potential risk if they continued working with foreign nations that may have been breached, so it was best to be more safe than sorry and try their best to survive. Ultimately, there was not much action taken by the inhabitants at first, although once the true scale of this outbreak had been made clear, leaders soon made an attempt to take action.
They would usually do this by increasing the military strength as well as fortifying the region and blocking off any entrances, leaving only one emergency exit that the government were aware of – this was to only be used in the event that there needed to be an escape of the important members of society. Yet, like many other nations, it was only inevitable for the kin’toni to make their way into the location, and soon the new Boeh kin’toni clan had been formed with hordes of kin’toni storming the region and even finding this emergency exit, meaning that the members of the government also became kin’toni.
This new clan ultimately had the intentions of making more use of the natural resources that could be found, as well as increase relations with neighbouring nations and expand on existing ones.
Psychology
Throughout the history of the Bogyr Thermal Terrace and its inhabitancy, the region has always been relatively calm and a very soothing place. One of the reasons for this could simply have been the emptiness it used to have and how before its expansion there were not many residents, whilst it could also be said that the kind actions of these residents were the reason why the region as such a great place; the inhabitants have always been known for being very warm, cordial, and welcoming people, who were willing to offer accommodation to travellers and even food, drink and other necessities.
Therefore, there were many who were willing to journey to the region as a way to escape the hustle and bustle of their daily life and experience the tranquillity of the area and its relaxing atmosphere. For instance, the many comforting, soothing hot springs served as large spas that people could relax in for a small price and even on some occasions free of charge, and the mud baths that could be found were a similar alternative method to calm the mind. Being such a luxurious place, many who originally planned to visit the region as a holiday soon chose to take permanent residence simply because of all the benefits.
And as a result of this the region continued to grow and expand. The kin’toni outbreak however caused disruption to this, as the inhabitants at first seemed to be very relaxed and uncaring about the matter, and in all honesty, they were not at fault; politicians and members of the government of the Bogyr Thermal Terrace had portrayed the kin’toni outbreak as not being too severe or much of a threat, and therefore people believed they could continue with the way of life they used to have – they were very wrong in thinking so.
Soon the region was close to falling into chaos and absolute discord as many foreign nations started walling themselves up and there was a huge drop in the number of travellers and merchants that journeyed into the region, causing almost irreparable instability and damage to the economy, had it not been for the actions taken by Kalum Goldbar. Now in a state of anxiety and tension, the region had now been given a new goal – to survive the kin’toni outbreak. With a newfound determination and motivation, the inhabitants went to work at doing whatever they could to block out the kin’toni.
(whether it was by sharpening military weapons or carrying supplies to places) – yet only the majority did, for some did not choose to shift their mindset, feeling that this may simply be propaganda for purposes that were most likely nefarious and only beneficial to those in power. Without the help of this minority, there was a huge dip in productivity and it could be argued that their lack of input was the reason why the region fell to the kin’toni; even then, they survived for quite a while, and it has become common belief – especially in this Twilight Age.
That the kin’toni were the superior kind, and that the zu’aan would never succeed in fighting against this new threat. Now the region is a place that has had its peace restored, with the communities trying to once again come together and adapt to a new kin’toni world.
Culture
The region of the Bogyr Thermal Terrace has been one that has been thriving with culture, with one of the noticeable parts of it being the fact that the area itself is a common tourist and holidaymaker destination due to the many services it provides – this ranges from the many hot springs and spas that were luxurious and refreshing to take a spa in, to the many other activities like climbing and trekking in the hilly parts of the region. Travellers can also be exposed to the food that can be found there, which would consist of meat and also loaves of bread that could be baked.
Due to the soil of the region being very rich in minerals, there are often very successful and profitable crop yields, which is necessary to feed the population and also to aid the economy as the temperate climate allows for fruits to grow. As for drinks, water was the most popular due to its rich composition of essential minerals, although beverages such as fruit juices were also commonplace; alcohol tended to be very seldom and rare and only consumed by a minority – particularly travellers. Another noticeable aspect of the region is its architecture, which consists heavily of stone.
When the first inhabitants migrated into the region, they were already proficient in crafting structures out of durable materials like stone, so worked alongside architects, miners, builders and even cartographers to build up the area. The cartographers also proved to be very useful as their maps allowed for the region to be analysed so that it could be worked out what routes into and out of the region were best and also how all the springs – which the small communities were based around – could be connected to increase relations and bring the inhabitants closer together.
It can be observed to see how mining played a huge part in the foundation of the region as there are many quarries and mineshafts that can be seen from the early days, with some still being used after many years and others being closed off due to a lack of resources or safety hazards. Meanwhile, the builders and architects had managed to make strong buildings that stood tall and proud, with most of them still being used to this day with a few repairs and extensions; even then, the neighbouring nations were utterly impressed by the nature of their construction and how it had managed to survive for so long.
No matter what time of year the region is visited, there is most likely some sort of festivity or celebration going on as many of the inhabitants were very religious and their religious leaders would decide when a time was auspicious, and on these occasions, it was said that the deities should be commemorated and that it was ideal for the residents to make prayers, and then if they desired spend time with friends and family to reflect on blessings. In some scenarios, dancing and singing were also common and very popular, so much so that foreign nations were more than happy to have musicians from the Bogyr Thermal Terrace perform for them.
As well as music, the region was also rich in literature with many talented writers and folklore originating from the Bogyr Thermal Terrace.
Government
During the origins of the Bogyr Thermal Terrace’s inhabitancy, there was not a formal government that was centralised and delivered all the rulings and orders of the region; however, there were still small leaders for each of the communities that were based upon the springs of the region. Each month, these leaders would come together to make decisions and discuss matters that may affect the whole region, with these talks including factors such as taxes, supplies, trading, any issues, and other topics of interest.
This system functioned well when there was a smaller population, but as the region started becoming more prosperous as the labour force began increasing their efforts in extracting more resources, there was soon a need to form a centralised government. The ultimate purpose for this would mean that trade could be consistent and continuous since the nature of a centralised government meant that negotiations could be made with the rulers of foreign nations, and hence benefit both the Bogyr Thermal Terrace and their neighbours.
The rulers at the time were correct in thinking this as the nation soon started to expand and grow, becoming bigger and even better than it had been before. With the kin’toni outbreak occurring, the government showed little concern at first with the leader at the time – Kai Goodrem – deciding that this event would not be such an issue and believed that the neighbouring nations would agree with him and continue everything as normal. However, he was clearly mistaken; the neighbouring nations saw the kin’toni as a threat and started walling themselves up, making clear borders that nobody would be allowed to enter and exit.
At a moment of ignorance, Kai Goodrem decided that he would not follow his neighbours and try to let life continue on in the region as it had before, but the chance of this even coming close to happening was near impossible, for there were hardly any traders or merchants coming into the region to sustain the economy. Soon, Kai Goodrem stepped down and, in his position, came Kalum Goldbar. Kalum Goldbar immediately made many changes in hopes of saving the region from falling into famine and any other form of disaster, so made sure that farmers were producing enough crops to sustain the region and also made it so that all the springs were now the property of the government.
And not the communities they had originally been owned by in an attempt to make sure that everyone had enough water to survive – this did not sit well with many and there were even some protests against this idea that escalated into riots, causing chaos and ultimately disruption that prevented the government from being able to continue making adjustments to protect against the kin’toni. Soon enough, the kin’toni had managed to penetrate into the region and make it their own, infecting all the inhabitants and establishing the Boeh kin’toni clan.
They followed the same beliefs as the previous rulings when the inhabitants were zu’aan and everything was said to be normal, with the one major difference being that the springs were now owned by the clan as a whole and not small communities.
Military
When the inhabitants of the Bogyr Thermal Terrace used to live in small communities that were based around the many springs of the region, there was not much of a formal military or one that was run by a centralised government; instead, each community would have their own platoon of troops that would be chosen after applicants went through hard testing. During the first round, there would be a test that was intended to see who had the potential, and the majority of people would be able to pass this with flying colours providing that they were physically fit and skilled in basic survival techniques.
After this, the second round would involve a slightly more intensive test, which would determine who would be capable of going into a more niche role in the armed forces – for instance in the navy or the archer squads. The final round was often optional and only necessary for those that were determined to gain a high rank in their specific section, which was usually only a small minority. As for military leaders, it was a common belief that only the deities could select who would be at the top of the armed forces and that their decision was final no matter what.
They would also be in charge of deciding who gets promoted to higher ranks. As time progressed, this system was continued but on a much larger scale so that it was used for all members of the armed forces in the region, with the sections being based on the community of origin. There were also a few changes which included the fact that there was now a specific uniform that had to be worn and this uniform was the only one that was said to be legitimate in the region – any old outfits were not seen as proper military attire.
This clothing would often consist of dark black trousers, a crimson red jacket with golden buttons, and also a cap that had a badge that would show what community the soldier came from or was fighting for. Furthermore, the government added a new test which could be taken to become a very well-respected troop that had the role of being the bodyguards of the important members of society, such as government members and religious leaders; they would don full black clothing and wear a mask that protected their identity and also allowed them to camouflage in the shadows, meaning that if the person they were protecting was attacked they could easily ambush the assailant.
When the kin’toni outbreak occurred and Kalum Goldbar started to take more action to protect the residents of the Bogyr Thermal Terrace against it, the military forces began to grow in significance – especially these special units. There were also many changes made that were intended to increase the strength of the region, such as by setting up camps at entrances and exits that were once commonly used to make sure nobody would get in or out of the Bogyr Thermal Terrace; it could also be seen that walls were made which would have walkways on them for the soldiers to walk on whilst they patrolled.
Religion
Within the Bogyr Thermal Terrace, there has always been one deity that has been worshipped by all the native inhabitants – this was Sitia, Goddess of Water. Within the region, water was perceived to be the biggest blessing due to its abundance and the fact that it was an integral part of the nation and its daily functioning. It was quoted by one of the inhabitants that “If we were to count the myriad of blessings that the gods and goddesses have given us, there is one that we will all think of in an instant – that is water.
Without such a blessing, we would not be at the stage we are at today, and we must all thank the benevolent Sitia, the Goddess of Water for providing for us. Whilst we know that water is needed for us to survive, it can be seen how powerful it is, as shown by how the rivers have forced themselves gushing throughout the lands, making their own shapes and allowing us to be able to transport ourselves and goods with ease. Indeed, we are blessed to have such a gift, a donation, an endowment.” To commemorate their divinity, the inhabitants would construct many statues and ideals of Her that could be found in the many temples.
These would often portray Her wearing aqua blue clothing with golden threads as stitching, with a crown of silver on Her head, decorated with lavish, luxurious gemstones. Oftentimes, there would be festivals and services held for Her, which would involve prayers and then dancing and singing whilst those who pleased could relax in the hot springs, enjoying the music and festive atmosphere. Some would even bring offerings such as jewellery and other valuables, hoping to receive blessings for doing so and believing that whatever they wished for would come true.
Alongside beliefs in Sitia, Goddess of Water, there was also the faith that there were spirits that would help her to bless the region – these were called the ‘spring spirits.’ It was believed that they would go to Sitia in order to get orders on what to do for the region, and then come down with rewards for the faithful and blessings for the righteous and pious. The rulers of some communities also said that they would have been visited by these spirits whilst sleeping or in a meditative state, and therefore that is how they know that they should be the ones to lead.
Others took the matters into their own hands and decided to only use religion simply as an extra factor when considering leaders and preferred a more democratic method instead. It was believed that the offerings that were given would also be able to call these spirits so that they could take up any messages to Sitia, or even bring down blessings as a prize for the offeror’s devotion and reverence. Sometimes, prayers would be offered near the springs and during auspicious times the spirits would congregate upon hearing the call of the residents, bestowing upon them benedictions and even miracles.
For example, the sick may be able to be healed.
