Geography

The Yilzka Bog earned its name from the enormous bogs that dominated the middle of the region. Large swathes of these interiors were covered in a permanent layer of sticky and thick mud with some extremely hazardous sections where navigation was not only impossible but dangerous. There were many stories of both wildlife and zu'aan getting stuck in these bogs with no way out. These unfortunate creatures endured slow painful deaths as the bog swallowed them whole. The bogs were colored an ominous black that took on the reflection of the sky during the day.

It appeared calm and harmless with several species of grass growing out of the thick sludge. The Yilzka also had other forms of terrain apart from the bogs, including solid ground that surrounded these massive bogs. These elevated lands were covered with a thick layer of tall grasses and trees and contained most of the wildlife and zu'aann habitats of the region. The bogs were formed as a result of the outer surrounding of swampland with stagnant water that would permeate into the surrounding regions, turning the soft soil into a slushy layer of mud.

These swamps in the outskirts of the region were navigated with the help of makeshift canoes that were made of branches, sticks and cured animal leather. The vegetation here was also dominated by large trees which covered the surroundings and blocked out most of the sunlight. The region had an abundance of vegetation with plants and trees covering most of its non-bog surfaces. However, agriculture was yet to catch on in the region and there was a noticeable lack of any organized cultivation of food crops.

The wildlife in the region was extremely varied and included the many fish and amphibious reptiles of the swamplands to the frogs and mud-dwelling reptiles in the muddy bogs. The region also hosted a wide variety of birds, both endemic and migratory species which doubled as the most common food source of the locals. The presence of large aquatic bodies all around the region made for a very humid climate in the region. The climate could shift from the cold, temperate feel of the winters to the humid, tropical heat of the summers.

The regions seasons were divided into two distinct categories, summer and winter. The summers were a period of constant rainfall, direct sunlight, humidity and heat. During these periods, the temperatures would linger around the thirties with an oppressive surrounding of air as humidity levels peaked. The skies would remain clear throughout the day and the direct heat of the sun would cause the evaporation of much of the surrounding waters which would fall in the cooler evenings.

The season was the mating period for most of the wildlife of the region and one could notice an observable increase in the animal populations right after these summers. In winter the sun's rays would be less direct and the region would enjoy a more moderate weather, with temperatures peaking at the mid-twenties. During this season the humidity would be lesser and both wildlife and zu'aan would spend more time wandering in the outdoors. Thus, the season would see an increase in conflicts and battles between clans and tribes.

Plants

The vegetation of the Yilzka bog was a combination of plants and wild grass that could grow in the extremely saturated mud of the bogs along with the aquatic plants that grew in the swamps and some hard wood trees that grew in the more elevated and drier sections of the bog. These plants were all adapted to survive in the separate conditions of each of their habitats. The most notable vegetation of the region included the marshland ardun, the elm'ing trees of the drier grounds, the sultin trees of the swamp and the aldtor trees of the bogs.

The ardun was a specific type of reed that grew in the muddy bogs of the Yilzka. They were among the few grass that could grow in the water-logged conditions of the soil without choking. Their roots extended deep into the layers of soft mud and its stalks which were a distinct bluish-green in color grew to a height of two feet off the ground. These plants were very hardy and could survive both extremes of temperature. They produced no noticeable fruit or fruits on their stalks and were of little use to the natives of the region.

Their stalk was quite strong and could be fashioned into lasting ropes but the trouble involved in reaching them through the muddy grounds of the bog far outweighed any potential it may have had as a raw resource. The roots and lower section of the plants which mostly remained entrenched within the mud served as a breeding ground for the frog like amphibians that were native to the region. The aldtor was a special kind of bog vegetation that resembled a single tree trunk growing out of the muddy ground.

It had no stems and its leaves were attached to the sides of its trunk. These leaves were a dirty yellow in color and shared the trunks with the edible fungi and spores that grew in the moist bark of these trees. The aldtor did not grow more than six feet out of the surface of the mud but had a very thick stem that was home to many small insects and amphibians that resided in the bog. The wood had little other practical use due to its very high-water content and brittle nature.

The elm'inge was tree was a look-alike of the elm tree that grew in the Yizlka. Unlike the ardun, this tree could not survive in water logged conditions, and only grew in the drier surface of the region. The tree was tall and could grow up to fifty feet in height. It served as an excellent source for the creation of the region small structures as well as rafts and weapons. The elm'ing was noted for its dull brown shade of its trees which was topped off by its yellowing leaves.

The sultin was a tree that grew in the watery swamps of the region They did not require much soil and had most of their roots above the water level of the region. These roots were plentiful and was regular eater by both the animals and settlers of the region. The sultin grew to no more than twenty feet and had thin barks that could be easily plucked by the birds of the region to build their nests. Their roots had an ability to recharge its surrounding waters with oxygen, making them the favorite spots of many aquatic wildlife that would lay their eggs around them to ensure that the unhatched eggs received adequate oxygen and minerals.

Animals

The Yilzka bog was home to a large number and variety of wildlife because of the warm and hospitable conditions that boosted the fertility rate among the region's wildlife. The wildlife was a combination of bog dwellers, amphibians and aquatic wildlife of the swamps and conventional mammals that lived on solid ground. The most popular ones included the clisulash frog, the amphibious rak'kal, the giant draurn predator and the ardage fish. The clisulash was one of the most common animals found in the Yilzka bogs.

It was a variant of a common frog, but larger and adapted to live underneath layers of mud in the bogs. The clisulash had a distinct physical appearance with its blistery brown back and puffed-up appearance that could easily disguise it as another rock or rough patch of mud in the bog. This was a common defense mechanism that it used to avoid the attention of predators. The clisulash was regularly hunted by the inhabitants of the region because of the special properties of its skin which secreted a hallucinogen that was in common usage among the criminals and bandits who lived in the region.

The rak'kal was an amphibious mammal that lived in the swampier sections of the Yilzka region. It could grow up to a length of eight feet in length and had scaly, rough skin that could protect it from smaller bites along with cuts and grazes. It was one of the few predators of the aquatic regions and fed on anything from smaller fishes to cattle sized animals and even zu'aan, if they wandered into their territory. The rak'kal main offensive tool was its long powerful snout that was filled with hard reptilian teeth that could chew through skin and bone without much effort.

The creature had gill like features that allowed it to breathe both underwater and on the surface. The draurn was one of the rarest sights in the Yilzka bog. The animal was the size of a full-grown buffalo and lived with half of its body immersed in the boggy mud for most of the day. This helped its body cool down during the summer months and maintained its body's temperatures during the cooler months. The most distinctive feature of the draurn's physical appearance were its two coiled horns that it used to gore its prey before it chomped down on it with its strong oversized teeth that lined its mouth.

It was very versatile in its diet and could feed on both animals and tree barks during periods of scarcity. The ardage was a freshwater fish that lived in the swampy waters of the Yilzka. It lay its eggs among the roots of the sultin tree which was also a source of its nutrition. It was among the most common fish species in the region, growing to almost ten centimeters when fully grown. The ardage were very slow movers and spent much of their time burrowing into the mud at the bottom of river beds and into water filled edges and cracks in the surface.
