Geography
The Yeleria Seasonal Forest may not be as large as other expanses, but it makes up for it in its great variety and density of locations. The deep cover of trees makes it hard to find many of these hidden locations. The Bead's Eye is a cavern on the southeastern quadrant. It was once a famous pirate hideout. It was abandoned after the kin'toni Clan took control of the majority of the forest a century ago. Recently some wild beasts have taken residence inside the cave, and it is believed a family of Dire Bears live in it. Westover was a small town on the forest’s edge.
A crossroad of trade for a distant civilization in its heyday. It was conquered by the kin'toni and has since fallen into disrepair. Most of the city has been abandoned, but a small group of survivors has remained more to the south, in a small battlement. The Cave of Eternal Night is thought to have been the original home of the Boelmos kin'toni Clan, a group of primitive bat-like creatures. Unfortunately, The Cave of Eternal Night has been destroyed by an invading army led by the vampiric earl Jarlos.
Who also happens to be the Boelmos kin'toni Clan's chief rival. Jarlos was driven out, but the Cave was never inhabited again. Abandoned logging cabins are scattered all throughout the southern edge of the forest. When the forest was slated to be destroyed for wood the leaders of several of the zu’aan cities agreed to a deal to allow the outside people to build their cabins. The outside people had agreed but the Boelmos kin'toni Clan is not part of this agreement and had vowed to destroy the loggers. After they were eaten or driven out, the cabins were left standing to lure in unsuspecting trespassers.
A zu’aan legend tells somewhere in the deep frozen north is the city of frozen reaches. It was founded after a great war. It survived the civilization collapse with its underground shelters and survived the creatures of the forest by withstanding the starvation and cold. A group of warriors and engineers created it to be self-sufficient with its own agriculture and underground power systems. It is believed that in summer, with the world warming up the city is coming back into the world and the city it could be seen on the surface again.
Stories tell that the people of the city have become pessimists. They believe they are the only advanced civilization in the planet. These are only myths since no contact or record exists of such city. However, many find it comforting to believe that after the civilizational collapse, somewhere, someone still has a better cultural and technological level and that such level can be restored someday. As such the legend of the Northern Reaches serves to give hope to the zu’aan by presenting them a world worth fighting for.
Plants
Yeleria is a place where seasons matter a lot. Plants are specially adapted to the four seasons and may change rapidly with the times. The forest is orange in autumn, pinkish in spring and green in summer, taking on a pale and shriveled look in winter. The main tree in the Yeleria Seasonal Forest is the ouphe, with a hard bark that is self-stripped in the winter (it falls off and regrows in spring). The fallen bark is used by the members of the Boelmos kin'toni Clan to fashion makeshift armor and camouflage themselves. Ouphe are large and strong.
And they are believed to be more “Intelligent” than other plants, “whispering” in the wind or moving their branches on purpose (this is rather likely to be purely superstition). They can live up to 4000 years according to the old writings. Furthermore they grow up to 75 meters tall, though few specimens reach this size, and 8 meters wide at the base. A secondary tree in the forest is the dereth. Dereth are host to the valuable ithrikira, which creates the silk material for the most exquisite garments zu’aan or Kin’toni has ever laid their eyes on.
Rangers seek the worm inside of the dereth hollows, but must be careful to not fall prey to the rest of the forest’s dangers. A suite of ten ithrikira is worth as much as a woods cabin (not that many people would want to live in one of those with the Kin’toni prowling anywhere near). There is a legendary kind of “beings” whose existence is likely to be just mythology. The sages of the Boelmos kin'toni Clan of the Yeleria Seasonal Forest have a tale of a race of tree people that live within the heart of the mires.
They claim that these tree people, the Cerems, are an ancient race of tree-like creatures who worship elemental spirits of water, earth and wind. Rumor has it that even now the Cerems are hard at work searching for lost secrets of magic, hidden deep in the swamps. And of the Cerems there are no more impressive than the mighty Teremos, considered by many as the "father" of the Cerem race. He was the first Cerem to master magic, and he devotes most of his time to its study. In reality, the The West Tree of the Teremos is an extinct type of regular tree known for its strength.
This was once the most common type of tree to see and is known as the 'tree of the west,' named because it is always found in the most western parts of the forest. It is a tree that was valued most for its wood, which is why it went extinct. Other types of plantlike beings are the inedible satuesava mushrooms, which are used as homes by alora families, and ikora-neva, which can be used as seasoning due to its high salt content.
Animals
The Yeleria Seasonal forest is known for its big and majestic animals, many of which hibernate to survive the harsh winter and wake up again in the beginning of spring. Nikiria are incredible hulking beasts that can grow to be over 20 feet tall. They are strong, fierce and more intelligent than the regular bear. They are a relatively recent discovery to the modern world. It is possible their existence is due to a yet unknown strain of the kin'toni plague. Zadros are proud and noble creatures who, despite the appearance of their semi-fleshy bodies.
Are said to be deeply spiritual lovers of the natural world. Their horns are a symbol of their power, strength, wisdom, and social position. The leadership of any community is usually held by the Horned Bull of that community, whose horns have been polished to a mirrorlike brightness. Mighty Aurochs are powerful, muscular, bovines that have long, shaggy brown fur and large horns. They possess a very primitive culture, and their minds are usually dominated by primitive urges and emotions, such as fear, anger, or a very basic instinct to emulate their herd culture.
Yeleria also has fast predators, such as the teki. The teki have evolved due to the harsh climate of Lynaria, and are considered an invasive species in Yeleria. teki are stocky big cats that are covered in fluffy winter coats. They possess a frosty breath that is rumored to be able to send enemies into a deep freeze, essentially freezing them to the spot. They love to play pranks on each other and humans which makes them a national danger to the little ones. Although they walk on all fours most times, teki are capable of standing and running on two legs for short periods.
Making them a popular source of confusion for other humanoids at a distance. n the smaller side, the Yeleria Seasonal forest is also home to insects and spiders. Zuleemos are considered an annoyance. They are wasplike creatures who gang up on prey, paralyze them with a sting, drain them, and then going into a cocoon to start a new colony. They have some control over the movements of one another. If the queen has one goal, it is to expand the hive. A legendary fae species is based on the zuleemos. The zuleemos folk are said to be a nocturnal animal-creature hybrid race of winged beings.
That reside within the Yeleria Seasonal Forest. Locals tend to distrust them because of their strange appearances and their non-common habits. They are devout worshipers of Kelarath, the god of wasps, and frequent hunters of Boelmos kin'toni, considering them a blood-sucking parasitic race that preys on unsuspecting travelers. There is no evidence of the true existence of these “waspfolks”. Travelers that go near the Yeleria Seasonal Forest had to be prepared with all manner of weapons and knowledge in order to elude or confront the most dangerous animals in the forest.
Even before the forest was controlled by the kin’toni.
