Geography
The Ycric seasonal forest was a region of alpine forest at the foothills of the Ycric mountains. The terrain was divided into scraggy rock covered slopes and the flatter and wooded forests. The scraggy slopes were covered in small rocks and had very little soil presence- leading to its barren appearance. The exposed rock faces of the slopes contained many cracks and natural caves that would provide the first zu'aan inhabitants of the region with shelter. The flatter terrain had better soil presence and was covered by a variety of vegetation.
It was known as a seasonal forest because of the overwhelming presence of seasonal deciduous trees and plants that would bloom during the warmer months while shedding their leaves once winter began. The region was drained by cold streams that flowed down from the snowcapped mountains that bordered the region. These wide streams would be brimming with fishes in winter, when many of the wildlife as well as the zu'aan would flock to its banks in an effort to combat starvation. The Ycric region was not a resource filled region, its soil did not support a lot of crops apart from the few vegetation that was indigenous to the region.
This lack of proper resources meant that the zu'aan of the region had to rely solely on the few pre-existing varieties of plants or on the wildlife for their dietary needs. It led to many conflicts and disagreements relating to the distribution and owning of these resources of the region, and made the natives into a survivalist society that only concerned with possessing and making use of these resources. The Ycric had widely varying seasons that included- summer, monsoon and winter.
The arrival of summer would be announced by the vegetation of the region being filled with color. The temperatures of the region would rise to the mid-twenties while also experiencing occasional rainfall and precipitation. The summer season would be followed by the dank and wet monsoon season. The region would receive days of continuous rainfall at a time. The streams of the region would fill with water and the water levels would rise. The soil in the flatter regions would become muddier and slushy, complicating travel in these parts of the region.
Temperatures would begin to drop steadily during this part of the year to a minimum of ten degree Celsius. The wet season would be followed by the relatively dry and cold winters. Most of the vegetation in the region would shed their leaves at this time of the year and the forest floors would be covered in rotting red and yellow leaves. The unavailability of edible plants would drive most of the wildlife of the region to the rivers where they could depend on the fishes for food.
Zu'aan hunters would also follow this pattern to get their prey during the winters. The temperatures of the region would fall to single digits and peak at around ten degrees. The rockier slopes of the region would occasionally receive snowfall during this time of the year.
Plants
The Ycric region was home to a wide variety of seasonal vegetation that would bloom and grow during the summer and wet monsoons while slowly losing their color and leaves during the winter months. This characteristic feature of the region would give it its distinctive seasonal-forest name. The soil of the region was not particularly fertile and supported very few crops that the zu'aan brought into the region from other lands. There were no large crop lands in this region and the population relied more on the wildlife and meat for their dietary needs.
Most of the vegetation of the forests were the deciduous trees that supplied the population with wood to build their settlements. A few examples of these types of trees were the en'say and the esstas. While there were not many crops or fruit bearing trees, some exemptions of this rule could still be found within the forests. Vegetation such as the rodrada and the iss'isa were edible plants that were regularly harvested for this purpose. The Ensay was a seasonal tree that grew in plenty among the forests of the Ycric region.
It was of moderate size and could grow to about twenty meters. They resembled a birch tree with their straight and long trunks that stretched upwards and contained diverging stems only on the upper strata of its structure. The tree was covered in bright green leaves that would progressively fade and fall off completely as the season got colder. The tree would lose all its leaves in winter and would assume a very spikey appearance. The Ensay was the choice wood for construction because of its easy availability as well the relative ease and simplicity involved in uprooting one.
The esstas was another seasonal tree that grew alongside the other vegetation in the Ycric forests. It grew to a similar height as the Ensay but was easily distinguishable by its broader trunk and more stems and leaves that flowed out of its trunk. Most of these trees in the region were very old and couldn't be easily uprooted- further limiting their usefulness as a construction material. The Esstas had yellow leaves that were tinged with red and supported many small ecosystems on their branches that were home to many local birds and small critters.
The rodrada was a common mushroom that occurred in the forest floors, deep within the Ycric region. They would crop up during the summer and monsoon seasons when the temperatures and humidity would be at the ideal level for their growth. They had a plain white color but were much larger than conventional mushrooms. Their caps could grow to over thirty inches in size and could easily fulfil a zu'aan's dietary needs for a day.
The iss'isa was a vine like shrub that coiled its way around the trees of the region.
It was known for its edible produce that was also called the iss'isa. This vegetable was regularly implemented in zu'aan diets. It grew seasonally and its availability would be affected by the weather and seasonal conditions of the region. Thus, making it an unreliable source of food for the region.
Animals
The wildlife of the Ycric region lived consisted of many plant eating species as well as predators that preyed on these herbivores. Scavenging was a necessary art for most of the wildlife as food became extremely scarce once winter rolled around. Most of these animals did not live in a constant spot and would regularly migrate across the region according to the seasons and conditions of the region. The most common animals in the region included the Robydo that lived in the rocky crags and caved in the slopes of the ycric, the otoni deer, the kimyn fish of the local streams and the large peyaf beasts.
The robydo was a predator encountered by the zu'aan when they first adopted the caves of the rocky slopes as their habitat. These animals lived alongside in similar crags and caves in the terrains. The zu'aan would regularly experience attacks by this stealthy beast that was known to do most of its hunting by night. It was nocturnal in nature and had a black coat of fur that helped it to blend into its environment at night. The robydo could grow to over ten feet and weighed over three hundred pounds, when fully grown.
It was a very deadly predator and could easily overpower individual zu'aan. The robydo relied on its incredible weight to bring down its prey once it pounced on them and could tear apart even the toughest of skin with their sharp teeth. The robydo were very limited in numbers and would become even rarer when the zu'aan began to properly establish themselves in the region. The otoni was a common source of food for the zu'aan as well as the various predators in the region. They were nimble and graceful creatures that grew to the size of an elk and could defend themselves with their antlers.
The animal wandered freely throughout the region and had many wild instincts that couldn't be tamed and prevented them from becoming domesticated cattle. The otoni were hunted for their meat and warm fur as well as their heavy layer of fat covering that could be used to light lamps or used for other incendiary purposed. These products were an important part of the region's exports and was vital for trade with other cultures and region. The kimyn were a species of fish that lived in the cold streams of the Ycric region.
They were known for their peculiar behavior of swimming upstream during the winter seasons when they would become the main source of nutrition for the animals and zu'aan living in the region. The fish measured over twenty-feet in length and had a substantial amount of flesh and fat content to satisfy the nutritional requirements of the people. They bred upstream in the winters and would swim downstream in the summers after they hatched.
The Peyaf was another predator that lived in the Ycric region.
It largely resembled a bear and had all the same attributes. It would hibernate during the winters and come out into the open during the summers to do most of its hunting. Its pelt was another valuable trade item of the region and was used to make winter clothing due to its good heat retention properties.
