Geography
Wutonsul Black Lake was inhabited by a local tribe for a long time. Because of this, little record exists of the geography that may have been when they still ruled the land. However, basic geography can be assumed. Wutonsul Black Lake is located close to the ocean. It is connected by a large channel that goes right into the large lake. This one geographical feature is why the land is so appealing to pirates. The lake connects directly to the ocean, but the channel is long enough to tuck the medium-sized pirate hot spot right out of sight. Should any nation's navy be on the search for deserters or criminals, the channel hides them far out of sight from the coast of the ocean.
The channel is also well enough hidden that only those looking for it can find it. This is due to the lack of care given to the land by the pirates. A lot of the flora and fauna in the region is very overgrown. On the land and lake, many different structures can be found. Small and meager homes were built to house pirates for short periods of time; specifically when some pirates need to lay low for a time to avoid the law. Other, larger, homes are also found on the lake’s beach. These homes belong to more high-profile pirates. Their abundance of treasure needs a place to be safe put when traveling for long periods of time; the homes do just the trick.
The high-profile pirates also have the means to build grand homes and hire other pirates to stand guard and watch their treasures. Other buildings that are found in the port village are bars and inns. These buildings are more common than the homes in the area. The inns house pirates for the shortest amount of time in Wutonsul Black Lake. They are not meant to be rented out forever, mostly one to two nights maximum. Most of the inns also are located right on the lake or channel. This gives the pirates easy access to them, as well as, it is better for business due to its easy access.
Bars are the most popular locations in Wutonsul. It is an accurate statement to say that all the pirates of Wutonsul have drinking problems. Sailing the high seas, committing heinous crimes, and being stuck on a boat for long periods of time will quickly drive a good person into alcoholism. Because of that, the bars get the most business in the whole Wutonsul area. Since business is good for bars, these are the nicest buildings in the region. Not even the high-profile pirate homes are as nice as the bars found in Wutonsul Black Lake. Overall, Wutonsul Black Lake is just a small port village.
It is frequented by some of the worst people in all of Taerel. Going to the village is not exciting as, for the most part, the village is quite rundown and very dangerous.
Plants
An abundance of plant life grows in Wuntonsul Black Lake. There are so many plants, but some of the more common plants are the potamog, seawrack, buswed, and lobelia. The potamog grows in the salt water that makes up the Wutonsul Black Lake. They have multiple long stems that bunch together to form a cluster that grows at the surface of the water. The stems are slender and flexible; moving with the waves of the lake. Potamog also have incredibly long stems that reach the bottom of the lake; usually about 70 feet long. They have a green, brown, or red color.
Leaves do grow on the stems and this aids the appearance of being a large cluster. Branches that breach the surface of the water have tiny green flowers. The seawrack plant has a thick stem growing on the lake's bottom. The roots of this plant are rather odd. The main part of the root is simply just a brown continuation of the stem. However growing off it is small, spikey roots growing in bunches. The stem and tendrils that grow above the dirt that lines the bottom of Wutonsul Black Lake have a dark green color. This part of the plant has many “fingers” which just means that long floating tendrils come off the main stem.
Seawrack have been slowly growing up the sides of the Wutonsul Black Lake. In the modern age, bunches have begun breaching the surface. Seawrack is edible and is a favorite meal, next to alcohol, of zu’aan pirates. Buswed is the name for the grass that grows on the actual land of Wutonsul Black Lake. This grass is one inch long on average and no more than a finger lengthwise wide. At the tip of the blade, a point is formed. Located inside the individual blades of grass are seeds that can be consumed. Many land roaming animals stay fed because of them.
The seeds are high in nutrients and easily accessible. Even though the animals of Wutonsul Black Lake rely on the buswed grass to stay fed, the buswed is not edible to zu’aan and is actually quite toxic. It is assumed that chemicals in the alcohol combine poorly with the chemicals that grow naturally in the buswed’s seeds. This would make it toxic to both zu’aan and kin’toni pirates. Wutonsul Black Lake has a rather bland color palette normally. When the rainy season comes, however, a pop of color begins to show up all over the region. This is the lobelia plant.
Lobelia’s grow to be around 4 feet tall, making it easy to be seen above the short grass. The thing that catches the eye the most is the bright red flower that adorns the top of the green stem. The shape that the petals grow in is unusual. They are five-petaled flowers with two sitting above the other three. The three grow right next to one another, and the whole petal part is attached to branching red stems.
Animals
Lots of animals inhabit the Wutonsul Black Lake region. The lake is abundant with water animals, with most of the creatures originating from the sea. One of these animals is the clupedi fish. Clupedi are small-headed, streamlined, beautifully colored fish. They have iridescent scaly sides and deep blue scales on their backs. The blue on their backs helps the clupedi blend into the water of the lake and avoid being caught when zu’aan are fishing. When they are fully grown, clupedi reach an average of 10 inches in length. They are the most abundant species of fish in the lake.
They travel in schools and stick together to avoid being eaten by zu’aan fishermen or the sharks that call Wutonsul their home, as well. The carchino shark is the only shark seen not just in the lake, but in the nearby ocean as well. They have a stout appearance and are multicolored. Carchino have dark tops and white undersides. It is common for all marine life in the Wutonsul Black Lake to have this shading, as it helps the animals camouflage with the water much easier. Male carchino grow to be about seven feet long and the females grow to be an average of eleven feet long.
Carchino consume a steady diet of clupedi fish. Since those fish are the most abundant, it is only natural that they make up a good portion of a carchino’s diet. It is a common practice amongst the pirates of the region to hunt carchino, so the population of the sharks in the area is rapidly dwindling.
Another marine animal that is found in Wutonsul Black Lake is the Wutonsul eel. These animals have long, bony, and slimy bodies. They have soft fins and an elongated dorsal fin. Wutsonul eels have large jaws that house even larger teeth. Wutonsul eels are also one of the few kinds of eels in Taerel to have scales covering their long, slimy bodies.
Wutonsul eels are omnivores so they will eat the smaller fish in the lake, as well as, the plant life that grows beneath the surface of the water. Most Wutonsul eels only grow to be an average of four feet long, but some can grow to be ten feet long. These eels usually have a fish-heavy diet. One of the few land-dwelling creatures that calls Wutonsul home is the gavian. Gavian are large semiaquatic reptiles that spend most of their days laying on the beach of the lake. In Wutonsul, gavian are the top predator. They will hunt the carchino shark, clupedi fish, and most notably the pirates that frequent the area.
On more than one occasion has a kin’toni or zu’aan pirate’s life been ended due to a gavian attack. These fearsome creatures have strong jaws and sharp teeth that can rip anything to shreds. They do not mind the hunt, so the pirates of the area have become a favorite meal of the many gavian in the Wutonsul Black Lake.
