Geography

Vorrd Orchard spans roughly 4,508 square kilometer, it sits mostly in the center and a bit south of the region. The orchard itself is split into three sections. The section to the north is the largest, spanning about 1,200 square miles. There are a variety of different flowers growing there. That section is split into two smaller ones, with one side being for summer flowers and the other side for winter flowers. The section to the west is for fruit trees. It spans an area of nearly five hundred square miles. These trees stretch up to varying heights, with the highest being almost twelve feet tall and the shortest being four feet tall. The section to the east is for berry bushes.

It’s roughly the same size as the western section. These bushes stand at an average height of about three feet. They come in all sorts of colors, just as the flower section does. There are hundreds of rows spanning across the orchard. There is about a foot and a half of space between each row, enough room to walk through. Between the fruit tree section and the berry bushes section span a distance of around five feet. A distance of four feet spans between the two sections and the flower section. Short and wide, rounded hills make up the terrain of the orchard. The largest hill is only about four feet tall. The rest of the land is forest and flat lands with varying levels of elevation.

The trees in the forest are tall, stretching easily up to thirty feet. Lush green grass covers the flat land. There are large animals that help with the grazing of this portion of the region. The soil is incredibly fertile and able to support a diverse variety of plant life. Animal life is also in abundance. Mainly small mammals and insects inhabit the orchard, though there are also birds that live in the fruit trees. To the far north of the region is a place that has black soil that doesn’t grow anything. It’s not large, only covering a few hundred feet. It’s said that nothing grows there due to zu’aan being burned there throughout the history of the region and the kin’toni being burned there throughout the past few decades.

It is still used as a place to burn the dead. The climate is temperate and changes with the weather. Luckily, the temperatures don’t rise too high and don’t drop too low. Snow occurs, but not often. Rain mainly happens in the early summer and sporadically throughout the rest of the year. During the summer, temperatures reach around seventy degrees during the day and mid-sixties at night. Every once in a while, temperatures will rise to almost ninety degrees. In the winter, temperatures drop to the low sixties during the day and drop to the low fifties at night. Like with winter, every once in a while the temperatures will drop lower, to almost thirty degrees. These days don’t happen very often, usually after heavy storms.

Plants

Vorrd Orchard supports a wide range of plant life thanks to its fertile soil. Fruit trees, berry bushes, and flowers make up over ninety percent of the plant population. This orchard has always been particularly famous for their ability to produce such variety in one orchard. Clort is a tall fruit tree stretching up nearly seven feet high. It is one of the tallest in the orchard. Its narrow, straight bark is smooth and a silvery blue. The wood inside is white. The branches are short, rigid, and stand upright. Large, black, sickle shaped leaves with round edges cover the branches. Several light blue flowers with broad, flat petals circling around thin black stems sit in the leaves.

The tree produces a small, triangle shaped fruit with dark purple skin and light purple, hard flesh. It has a small, black, sphere shaped seed in the center. The skin is thin and can be eaten. The fruit has a very tart taste to it, but a sweet smell. Tirrium is a berry bush that produces yellow and orange berries with yellow and orange skin and flesh. The berries have a diamond shape to them, with four small, sphere shaped black seeds. The yellow berries have a tart taste to them and the orange berries have a sweet taste to them. They grow on bushes that stand at almost four feet tall. Medium sized, green, pleated leaves with serrated edges cover the bush. These berries can be used to ease headaches when steeped in water.

Dlirin is a large flower that grows up to about one and a half feet. It has a thick, black stem with wider black leaves that have smooth edges. Two flowers grow at the end of the stem that are shaped like wide bowls. Its round petals are flat with a pale blue on top and black on the bottom. The flowers are larger than a fully grown, adult male’s palm. Their roots are thin, making the flower delicate. The petals are edible and have medicinal benefits as well. They can be used to break fevers and ease stomach pains. By making it into a paste, it can be applied to wounds to stop infections. By steeping it in water, it can be used to ease labor pains. These are one of the flowers that only bloom in the winter.

Uall is a type of grass that grows around the fruit trees, and one of the few plant species that are not considered an official part of what the orchard produces. It grows a little shorter than a foot and is a light green. The stalks are spear shaped and grow in thick patches. Small, white, five petal flowers grow at the end of the stems. Uall has no medicinal benefits, nor can it be eaten. It’s mostly used as mulch during the winter to help protect the fruit bushes as it grows in an abundance. During the winter, the flowers on the grass do not bloom.

Animals

Most of the animals in the Vorrd Orchard are small mammals and insects. There are, occasionally, a few large grazing animals that have to be shooed away, and birds that have made their homes in the fruit trees. Bairphin are a breed of small bird that makes its nest in the fruit trees. They stand at a height of only one and a half feet and have a wingspan of two feet across. They have a long, wispy-like tail that is a little over a foot long. Their feathers have diamond shaped tips and are a gradient mix of green at the top to black at the ends. Small black feathers cover its head. Their round pupils are surrounded by bright green irises. Females lay between two to three eggs.

They are omnivores with a diet of the fruit on the trees and the insects that try to eat the fruit. They will occasionally go for the berries. The zu’aan allow them to stay in the tree because they eat more of the insects than they do the fruit, especially the invasive ixmon. They do not migrate in the winter. Ixmon are an invasive species of insect. They have long, blue, tube shaped bodies with ridges that can grow up to a foot long. They have nearly thirty short and stubby legs beneath their bodies and a small stinger at the bottom end of their body. This stinger, while not venomous, can cause a burning pain. Their legs can actually extend a few centimeters, which allows them to better grab the fruit.

They have three rows of sharp teeth that allow them to bite into thick fruit skin. They can be found wrapped around the fruit in the trees and on the ground within the berries. They prefer sweet fruit, which they only take a few bites out of. The fruit that they pick at usually spoils within a few hours. If it isn’t removed within a few days, it can spoil the rest of the bunch. The zu’aan have to constantly check the states of the fruit due to ixmon. Gisodian are a breed of small, six legged mammals that have a love for stealing flowers. Their short, soft fur is white with light brown spots. They have three claws on each paw that are retractable. They have a slim eye shape with slitted black pupils surrounded by blue red irises.

They are attracted to the sweet smell that some of the flowers give off. They steal the flowers and bring them to their burrows, using the soft petals like beds. You can usually smell a gisodian from a few feet away due to this. Though they like flowers, gisodian are carnivores. They prey on smaller mammals, though there aren’t many smaller than they are, and insects. Instead of migrating during the winter, gisodian mate in their burrows. Females spend around two months in the burrows before giving birth. They can give birth to anywhere from two to four young.
