Geography

The geography in Tialum Roofed Swamp is rather interesting. Because it was once a rainforest that got submerged, a lot of the geography is located beneath the surface. When it was a rainforest, the Tialum area was located in a valley and surrounded by cliffs. To get to the rainforest, one would have to slide down the steep cliffs of the nearby areas and accept that getting out would be near impossible. The geography of the rainforest was flat, but the entire area was surrounded by those cliff walls. As a swamp, the area is rather wet and flat.

The swamp can be accessed right from the cliffs that once engulfed the Tialum rainforest. There is little change in elevation going from the surrounding land into the swamp, as it is now. One can simply just walk right into the swamp, although it is more of a swim due to the deepness of the swamp. The swamp floor is still rather flat, just covered in a thick layer of debris from the fall out of the creation of the swamp. Tialum Roofed Swamp did not get that name by happenstance. The swamp is covered by the thick canopy of trees that once blocked out the sunlight in the former rainforest.

The trees that break through the surface of the water are really the only plant life that remains from the rainforest era of Tialum. The canopy has grown to be very thick in the swamp, and actually blocks out quite a bit of the natural sunlight, causing the area to be shrouded in perpetual twilight. Leaves that grow on the swamp trees are thick and big; absorbing most of the sunlight before it is able to break through and shine on the swamp. Some sunlight does get through, however, and in these parts, more plant life can be seen growing than in the darker areas of the Tialum swamp.

The actual swamp water is murky and hides the creatures that lurk beneath its surface. Since the rainforest was not the largest of areas, the swamp is not either. However, it does appear to be a much larger area than it is due to the trees hiding the innermost parts of the swamp. Since the trees have existed in Tialum a lot longer than the actual swamp, many of the larger trees have become their own geographical features in the area. The largest trees in the swamp have formed islands around them. These islands are rather large and are even able to support a decent population and variation of animals that now inhabit the area.

They formed mostly from debris, but some sand does help give the islands some structural integrity. This sand comes from beneath the former soil of the rainforest and was dislodged during the devastating floods. It rose from the ground, floated around the swamp for a while until eventually, the sand began to stick to the trees until islands of various sizes had been formed in Tialum.

Plants

When Tialum was still a rainforest, naturally, many trees grew there and were found in abundance. Now that the area is strictly swampland, only two types of trees really grow there. The first kind is the tall trees that form the tree islands in Tialum, and it is called eucanis. These trees grow to be about 100 feet tall, with only around 15 feet of that height growing above the waterline. The visible tree bark is a pink-grey, and beneath the murky waters, the bark has become bioluminescent light pink. The bioluminescence started some years after the flooding, probably due to the effect that debris and dead bodies had on the water content and plant life that managed to survive.

The leaves on the tree are a glossy green and sometimes have flower buds are the parts of the leaf that are more attached to the branch that it grows from. The other kind of tree that grows in the Tialum swamp is the quercis tree. This tree is not bioluminescent like the eucanis, as it has not been in the Tialum area for a long time, and really only popped up after the Tialum Roofed Swamp had begun to fully form. It has a striking peeling bark that is colored white. The leaves on this tree are large leaves that block out the sun from the swamp. On the sunnier side, so the leaf face that is facing towards the sun is silvery-white; most likely due to the constant sun exposure bleaching it.

On the side facing in and towards the swamp, the leaf is dark green; this helps keep the Tialum Roofed Swamp look even darker. The next few plants are plants that grow strictly in the water. Vallneris is a type of grass that grows underneath the water, on the swamp floor. The grass may appear to not be very tall, but in actuality, the grass is tall enough to grow past the debris, and hide the debris along the swamp floor. They have long thin leaves that usually grow in a cluster. Vallneris has been seen releasing a seed that floats to the bottom of the swamp, takes root, and then more of the swamp grass grows.

While the grass does have a proper name, most just refer to the vallneris as swamp grass. Another type of plant that grows in the water is the nymphanis. Nymphanis sit atop the water, but have roots that grow down into the swamp floor. On top of the water, they have a rounded, waxy-coated leaf that has air in pockets to keep it floating. The stems are long and thin, and can really only grow in the mud that is the Tialum Roofed Swamp floor. On some nyphanis, flowers grow and sit atop or next to the leaf. Occasionally, the flower will produce beautiful fruit. Despite its beauty, the nymphanis fruit should be not eaten; it can cause a flurry of symptoms like vomiting and nausea.

Animals

Tialum Roofed Swamp is home to a vast array of animals. From amphibians to mammals, the swamp has it all. Many of these creatures are quite dangerous and should be ultimately avoided when visiting the swamp. Some of the other creatures are what the first kind feeds on; they’re rather small and helpless creatures. One of these creatures the more dangerous creatures is the arlnunae. Arlnunae are big creatures, reaching about 10 feet in length. They have small legs and walk on all fours. They don’t go out of their way to hunt, they will, however, eat whatever is available.

So to a confused traveler, going the wrong way or stepping in the wrong spot could spell serious trouble. Arlnunae don’t need to go out of their way to hunt because they can kill anything that gets too close with their strong jaws and sharp teeth. Arlnunae are local to the area and have been for some time. This is known as their eyes have a tendency to grow in the darker parts of the swamp. Kind of like the bioluminescence of the eucanis tree. They feed mostly on the smaller animals that just wander into an arlnunae’s mouth, but if given the opportunity, arlnunae with enjoy feasting on kin’toni and zu’aan alike.

Another predator that calls Tialum Roofed Forest its home is the yukovi. This creature is a four-legged menace that stalks its prey. With a height of 2 feet, the yukovi animal is not the biggest creature in Tialum. It is, however, incredibly proficient in hunting and killing prey. They all have big paws with sharp retractable claws. They are agile creatures and can run through the trees as well as they can run on land. They have yellowish fur with black spots sporadically placed on their bodies. They have been heard to make a laughing or chuckling sound when interacting with other members of their kind.

The yukovi are not pack animals and prefer to hunt alone, but they do enjoy the occasional social interaction with members of their same species. They can hunt zu’aan, but kin’toni prove to be more of a challenge to hunt, and so their diet mostly consists of lost zu’aan and small swamp animals. Finally, another notable animal that calls Tialum Roofed Swamp its home, is the docile sylvana animal. Sylvana are one of the smaller creatures that reside in the swamp, measuring only slightly taller than one foot in height. These creatures have blackish fur on their backs and reddish fur on their undersides.

They have small puffy tails that are not very long, as this would make them easier prey. They are strict herbivores and have a main diet of nymphanis. They will eat both the leaf and the flower that grows on the plant. Since they are one of the main species hunted in Tialum, these small creatures have adapted. They can outrun kin’toni and jump into the tall leaves of the eucanis tree for safety.
