Geography

The Rinfenus landscape was dominated by a singular mountain peak that rose above the rest of the terrain. This actively volcanic mountain was known as the Rinfenus volcano and measured over six thousand meters. It had smaller mounds and hills that extended from it and was most popular for the boiling thermal baths that occurred along these slopes.

The surface of the mountain slope was a mix of volcanic rock and remains of magma flow that were crusted into the surface, needless to say there was little to no vegetation here as the soil was unable to hold water nor had any beneficial minerals to aid in plant growth. This terrain was a distinctive black color from the fallout of volcanic ash and the remains of past eruptions. Vegetation could be observed beyond two thirds of the way down from the tip of the peak. Here the terrain was covered with light grass and clusters of shrubbery.

The soil was more brownish in color and could support small amounts of hardy vegetation. These areas in the lesser slopes of the mountains were still vulnerable to the magma flowing down from the top. However, the magma ran down in established channels and rarely diverted from their usual course. These channels were distinctively greyish black in color from all the burnt soil and vegetation. The foothills of the Rinfenus mountain had flatter terrain and was visually distinctive from the rest of the mountains due to the presence of abundant vegetation.

The soil here was viscous and dark brown in color, and filled with fertile minerals that supported the growth of all kinds of vegetation. The ground was a colorful green from the thick covering of grasses and was dotted with multicolored flowers that would bloom all through the summer seasons. The flatter foothills were also dotted with volcanic springs and geysers that occurred around rocky openings into the earth. The rock formations had a waxy appearance, similar to stalactites in caves and were very rich in minerals.

The region had a temperate climate with warm summers and cool winters but would experience regular distortions when the Rinfenus volcano erupted. Normal temperatures in summer were pleasant and remained in the high twenties. Short periods of rainfall would also occur throughout, bringing much needed water to the vegetation of the region. In winter the temperature stuck to the low twenty's with cold winds that could bring down the temperature for a few more degrees for short periods.

There was adequate sunlight all year round and enjoyed great visibility throughout the year, cloud cover was also generally low to moderate. These conditions could flip when the Rinfenus volcano erupted. During these times, the visibility in the region would fall substantially and a thick layer of clouds would cover the skies, blocking out the sunlight and affecting plant life. This was taken to the extreme during the eruptions of 3E 165, when the region was plunged into complete darkness.

The resulting crop failures and famines led to chaos and many wars over the sparse resources still available in the region.

Plants

The Rinfenus region was home to a wide variety of unique vegetation for each of its different zones. The rocky and unfertile upper reaches of the Rinfenus mountain were home to scattered clumps of the resilient roth'ess shrubs while the fertile lower reaches were covered in different varieties of flowering plants, shrubs and raytine grasslands along with large forested regions of theroni trees. The Mediterranean climate of the region ideal for a lot of these vegetation and a common feature among them was their low water requirement and their evergreen characteristics.

The first among these, the roth'ess was a hardy shrub that could survive in the harsh upper regions of the Rinfenus mountain. They grew around the remains of volcanic rocks, ashes and dust and had deep lying roots that penetrated deep into the ground to find the soil layer. The shrub had a dry appearance and was colored a light and dull greenish-yellow. Their leaves were fleshy and had needle like protrusions, similar to a desert cactus and could store generous amounts of water for future use.

These leaves were widely sought after by the locals, who commonly used them as flavoring agents to season their food. The raytine was a more colorful plant that grew all along the fertile soil in the lower reaches and foothills of the mountain. The plant had a characteristic dull golden color all along its stalk and ended in a bud that bloomed during the summers. The raytine required very little water to survive and had dry and crusty texture on its stalks as a result.

They grew in clumps and could cover entire grasslands, turning entire fields a light golden. Their seeds were edible and were a regular source of nutrition for the zu'aan natives who grinded them down to flour for their bread. The raytine bloomed once every season and had wide variations in appearance, with no two stalks sharing the same pattern or colors. The theroni was a light tree that grew to no more than fifteen feet at its tallest. It had a thin and tall stem that was colored a light brown and had branches extending out only from the upper sections of the tree.

Its leaves were a dry yellow and had tiny, bright orange fruits that grew out of the same stem. These juicy fruits were famous for their intoxicating properties and were most commonly used to create a variety of drinks. The region had many clans who grew these trees for their fruit, which was a valuable trade product- always in high demand among the priestly classes and pilgrims who came to visit the region's thermal pools. The theroni required very little water or maintenance and could endure long periods of drought which was a common occurrence in the region.

The tree had little other use apart from its fruit. It barely grew tall or leafy enough to provide enough shade from the sun and its wood was thin, brittle, and had little purpose as a construction tool.

Animals

The upper reaches of the Rinfenus mountain were uninhabited by most wildlife except for some high-flying birds who build their nests on the rocky slopes. The location ensured that their eggs and fledglings remained out of the reach of scavenging predators. The lower slopes and foothills with their fertile soil and vegetation supported a larger variety of wildlife. These included the stealthy cat like predator called the burum, the gras-feeding kimgha and the predatory bird, perund.

All these animals were adapted to survive on very little water and could quickly adapt to any loss of their habitat from unpredictable volcanic eruptions. The burum was an opportunistic predator that roamed the tall grasslands in the foothills of the Rintenus. It had a rough coat of light golden fur with dark mottled patterns that could help it easily conceal itself amongst the tall vegetation of the region. When fully grown the Burum could reach a length of up to two meters and stood about three feet off the ground for a maximum weight of three hundred pounds.

The beast had muscular legs with soft padded paws that muffled its footsteps and masked most of its movements in the environment. It had retractable claws that could extend out to almost four inches when it pounced on its prey. These claws could tear into flesh and skin and let the animal hang on to its prey and eventually drag it down. Even with its fearsome characteristics the burum was known to avoid encounters with zu'aan, kin'toni and other predators, preferring instead to prey on easier targets like the kimgha and domesticated cattle.

These animals were shy nocturnal beasts and it was very unlikely to encounter one during the day. The kimgha was a herbivorous species that lived off the raytine plants in the foothills of the region. They measured about three feet in length when fully grown and stood about two feet off the ground. The mammal had a wooly brownish coat and produced a high-pitched squeaking to communicate among their herd. They were easily domesticated and could be found in most settlements and villages in the region.

The kimgha was valued for its nutritious meat and milk which could sustain entire colonies when the crops failed. Their value tripled after the massive volcanic eruption of 3E 165, when the resulting ash cloud plunged the region into darkness and caused many crops to wither. Additionally, their coat was also a regular component of zu'aan clothing that would later be adopted by the A'voreld kin'toni. The perund was a predatory bird that lived in the upper reaches of the Rinfenus mountain.

Its full wingspan was over five feet, helping the bird soar to high altitudes and swoop down to pick its prey. Its diet mainly consisted of smaller reptilian species and young kimgha that they would stalk and steal with thier enormous and sharp talons. They were regularly hunted by zu'aan farmers who considered them as pests but also for their meat which was considered as something of a rare delicacy and an acquired taste.
