Geography

The Qan'Haar Isle was one among a chain of volcanic islands that protruded out of the Sea. Qan'Haar was the largest island in its chain, encompassing a distance of more than 50 square miles. The island was visible from far and wide with its single volcanic peak that rose to a distance of more than seven thousand meters above the sea. The peaks of the mountain were covered in snow all year round and its sides were filled with vegetation as it slowly sloped down to the sea.

The ground had a lot of variations from the barren volcanic rocks on the upper reaches of the mountains that slowly turned to black vocanic soil and finally to small pebbled beaches where the land met the waters. The region was quite fertile and supported a variety of vegetation and wildlife. The Wyta Kin'toni brought with them many new methods and advancements in agriculture that greatly increased the region's yield and led to the introduction of many new varieties of crops.

The region was filled with wildlife, from the dark forests in the foothills that contained many varieties of tropical wildlife, to the waters lying off its coast that supported a large aquatic population. The abundance of wildlife was a result of the favorable climate in the region that had very little extremes of temperatures. The terrain was filled with ice cold brooks and streams that ran down from the snowy mountain peaks. While the region received tropical levels of sunlight and warmth, it was moderated by the cold currents that ran off its coasts.

These brought in cold breezes that blew into the island year-round and helped to keep the temperatures at a pleasant level. Aside from these moderating influences the surroundings could also exert their fury on the island. Each summer brought in tropical storms that would ravage the coastline and destroy both vegetation and wildlife. These unpredictable storms could range on for weeks and were particularly hazardous for the fishing boats and crafts that plied their trade off the island's coast.

The other omnipresent danger in the island was the dormant volcano that would erupt during the Shattering in 3E 118, covering the region in a layer of volcanic ash and cloud, affecting the regions agriculture and fauna for decades. The region experienced two distinct climates in a year, summer and winter. In summer, the temperatures would rise to tropical levels, heating the land and creating an area of low pressure that would attract strong winds from the surrounding waters. This caused many unpredictable storms to break out during the summers.

In winter, the temperatures remained consistently high and had little effect on the vegetation or the land conditions. The only changes occurred in the surrounding waters where the temperatures would plummet to freezing levels. These cold tides would bring with them many shoals of fishes and aquatic beings who would remain off the waters surrounding the island to take advantage of the warmer conditions. This made winter a lucrative season for the Wy’ta fishermen who would stay out at sea for days trying to gather as much of the catch to last them till the next winter.

Plants

The vegetation of the Qan'Haar Island is dominated by tropical evergreen plants that retain their color all year round. The region provides sufficient water, sunlight and conditions to support all kinds of vegetation ranging from the tropical danmos and aldser trees and the bur'ight and is'en plants. The danmos was a tropical tree that resembled a conventional palm tree. It was a regular sight in the beaches and even further inland where it grew between clumps of the thicker aldser trees. It had a long vertical stem that was branchless and could grow to a height of twenty feet.

Its leaves branched out from the top and could fulfil a variety of purposes such as packing material for food. The tree had plenty of utility, producing both fruits and a reliable bark that was used in boatmaking as well as roofing. The danmos produced a hard oval shelled fruit that contained water a milky juice inside alone with a soft edible interior. It could stave off both hunger and thirst and was a vital part of the fishermen's stores when they headed out to sea. The barked could be stripped to create tough and rot resistant ropes that was also vital for sea faring people in the region.

The aldser trees were more concentrated inland and thrived in the tropicl conditions of the island. It grew to a maximum height of over twenty-five feet and had additional roots that extended down from the branches to the ground below. It had a wide stem that could be harvested for good quality wood, useful in construction and for boat building. The tree's leaves were edible and had medicinal properties that included curing tropical fevers and digestive issues. Its bright green fruits were also a staple of the island diet.

The aldser would bloom once every season and produce small purple flowers that would cover the entire tree and turn the forest purple. The bur'ight was a type of grass that grew in the snowcapped peaks of the Qan'Haar island. It was among the few variety of vegetation that could be found in the colder and barren terrain of the mountain. They were adapted to grow in the low oxygen environment of the higher altitudes. The bur'ight plant had a dull grey stalk topped by a fluffy white flower that had buoyant properties and was regularly harvested for creating floatation devices.

The soft and fluffy flower could also be packed close together to form comfortable household amenities like pillows and beds. The is’en was a type of seaweed that grew in the sea floor surrounding the Qan’Haar islands. The plant was long and flat, and colored a dark green on one side and yellow on the other. It provided a safe habitat for many of the local fishes and was also a source of nutrition for the aquatic lifeforms. During the storm season, many uprooted is’en would flood into the surrounding beaches of the island where they would be collected by the locals as a readily available food supplement.

Animals

The Qan'Haar was home to a wide variety of both terrestrial and aquatic wildlife. This was mostly owing to the moderate and fertile climate of the surface and the plankton and is'en filled waters off the coasts. The tropical forests were teeming with animals of all kind like the sulum and burcer, and the waters contained many lifeforms like the giant laruso. The sulum was a monkey like creature that live atop the aldser and danmos trees of the forest. The sulum grew to no more than three feet and were known to possess higher intelligence than most creatures in the wild.

They had opposable thumbs and prehensile tails that allowed them to accomplish complicated tasks such as climbing branches and using basic tools. The sulum came colored in golden with black strips all over its back. It possessed a light, furry coat that allowed their skin to breathe in the summer and protected against the bites of disease transmitting insects that bred all over the island. The sulum had very lax dietary requirements and could feed on both fruits, nuts and other animals.

It had a set of sharp razor-sharp teeth that were capable of severing muscles and bones of smaller animals in the forest. Despite these lethal characteristics, the sulum was known to be harmless and relaxed under normal circumstances- some could even be tamed and used as pets. The burcer was a wild hog like creature that lived in the wooded parts of the Qan'Haar isle. The animal was known for its gamey meat and rich blood that was a favorite form of sustenance among the Kin'toni in the region.

Despite its unassuming appearance, the burcer was capable of defending itself with its sharp tusks that could gore its enemies. The animal had light brown color and wild hair that covered the entirety of its body. When fully grown, it could easily weigh over two hundred pounds and reach a maximum height of two feet and a length of over three feet. The burcer were known for their high fertility rates and could take over entire regions, if left unmonitored for long periods.

The laruso was a giant aquatic mammal that would migrate to the waters off the Qan'Haar island every winter. Their migration patterns were very consistent and their arrival would signal the start of the fishing season for the local fishermen. They were among the many organisms who travelled thousands of miles every year to feed on the large quantities of plankton that occurred in these waters. The laruso could grow to enormous lengths of over twenty feet and had an enormous girth that was filled with a layer of blubber and smooth rubbery skin.

These made them a valuable source of blubber and meat for the Kin'toni of the region. The large size did not impede the laruso's grace in water, it was capable of reaching speeds in excess of 30 knots and could perform acrobatic moves when it broke the surface of the water.
