Geography

The Okoli Caldera was situated between the Jakyla Lava Tubes in the east and the Natye Desert in the west. The location was once an active volcano that spewed out its last fires and lay dormant for many years before collapsing into itself. The whole mountain was turned into a large bowl with a lake at the bottom of it. The freshwater lake was quite deep and had a large population of aquatic life supporting many fishermen of the region. The gently sloping inner bowl sides were covered in black dust and hard rocks spewed up by centuries of volcanic activity.

The terrain here was plain and homogeneously black, and supported no vegetation. These black rocks here were shipped all over the region and used for construction and a variety of other purposes. The slopes in the outer side of the bowl were covered in the distinctive viscous, black soil of the region that was known to be very fertile. A variety of large evergreen trees and vegetation grew here and the ground had many spots where the magma was embedded into the terrain from previous eruptions, forming myriad shapes and designs.

The ground here was also covered in black soil. The entire region was crisscrossed by many different paths and roads that had been carved into the land by the kin'toni and the armies that followed after them. Apart from these, the region was also surrounded by a variety of natural features formed as a result of previous volcanic activity- including Volcanic caves, plains, mounds and pits. The region had a temperate climate with an unbearable level of humidity that persisted year round.

The three main seasons of the region were spring, summer and winter- which varied only on the amount of rainfall received and tiny variations of temperatures. In spring, the ground would blossom with wild flowers and fresh plants. In summer, the rainclouds would slowly move into the region, bringing with them their oppressive humidity, creating puddles in every depression in the ground. Winter was the last season of the region. Crops were harvested during the start of this season and the humidity lowered to bearable levels.

The geography of the region was also altered at the hands of the kin'toni and the armies that followed them into the region. The sites of battles like the "Battle of the High Winds" bore the marks of warfare and remained barren for many years after. The Byrziazna clan's march into the region also left a mark on the terrain, the historical path remained treeless and still retained evidences of destroyed houses and tree stumps that were burnt to deprive the local's populations off their resources and livelihood.

The historically temperate climate of the region changed slowly after the Shattering when a cold wave began to blow in from the North. The changes happened slowly at first, the flowers stopped blossoming in spring, crops started failing and eventually the first snowflakes began to fall over the black soil of the Okoli lands.

Plants

The Okoli had two distinct type of terrains, the barren and rocky terrain of the Caldera and fertile black soil outside of it. The rocky insides of the Caldera were only populated by small shrubs and herbs that grew in small nooks and crannies underneath the rocks and tiny cracks on the earth. Further away on the outside of the Caldera, the ground was filled with all sorts of vegetation that was supported by the viscous, fertile soil. The moderate climate and adequate rainfall helped the growth of many different kinds of vegetation, including some exotic plants that were unique to the region.

Some of the most prominent vegetation of the region included the dadar, the nyseq and the rayvestin. The dadar plant was a fruit bearing plant that grew in abundance on the fertile lands outside the Okoli Caldera. They were grown for their green fruit which could be eaten for sustenance or used to produce an intoxicating juice when left to age over the warm and humid summers. The plant itself could grow up to six feet in height and was colored a light yellow that grew brighter as it ripened.

The Dadar required the viscous, black soil of the Okoli region and was thus exclusive to the region. The methods of brewing these fruits were passed down from the native tribes of the region and became one of the most popular secrets of the region. The recipe and product were highly valued and became a popular item once trade reached these lands. The Nyseq was a native tree of the Okoli Caldera. It could grow up to thirty feet and was characterized by its tall lanky appearance with little leaf covering towards the top ends of its branches.

Its branches were a pale white in color and had red leaves that were used to dye cloth for nobility. These trees would grow together in clumps and groves, turning the entire region red when the spring season came. This was the only use of the tree as its wood was weak and compromised by the constant humidity that it had to endure in the region. The tree produced a bitter and poisonous fruit that was used by cultists and many assassins who wanted to ensure a bloodless killing. The ugly reputation of its fruit made the tree a symbol of treachery and deceit among the local clans of the region.

The rayvestin was a unique moss that grew in the rocky and dust covered terrain inside the Caldera. The moss was blue in color and had a soft, furry texture that was unlike any other surface in the rocky caldera. It clung to the wet surfaces of rocks and between moist cracks and hard ground. Entire floors would be covered with these furry carpets during the short, rainy season, bringing flocks of native healers and traders flocking to the region. The plant was known to be a remedy for a variety of ailments which made it an item of particularly high demand all around the continent.

Animals

The Okoli Caldera was known for the variety of its wildlife. The contrasting terrains meant that there existed entirely different ecosystems and wildlife within the caldera and the greenery outside it. The wildlife of the region included the soorm, the istona and the helele to name a few. The Sorom was a giant creature that towered over all other wildlife in the region. Standing at a majestic ten to fifteen feet above the ground, this creature could see all threats that approached it before they got wind of its presence.

Despite its commanding presence, the sorom was a strict herbivore and only resorted to violence for self-defense. It was capable in this capacity and used its single, long tusk to ram and gore its opponents to death. Its skin was covered in light brown fur that protected it from both rain and cold as well as well as cuts and bruises. Its meat could sustain an entire village for weeks and was thus a considered a prized catch. The istona was a reptile that lived within the black dust and rocks of the caldera.

It crawled on all fours with its underside dragging across the ground. The creature was regularly caught and skinned for its hard, scales that could be used as armor. This scale was known to be very flexible and comfortable, and was one of the premium components of the native tribe's armor. Its meat, however was putrid and only used as a joke or to show disdain towards a guest in one's home. The helele was a domesticated mammal that was used by the natives of the region as a hunting pet.

It stood on all fours and was known for its agility and ability to work well in packs. It had a keen sense of smell that could smell out even the slightest hint of blood for vast distances. It reached up to only over two feet in height and came equipped with four muscular legs and a slender body that could glide through the terrain. It had no fur and its skin was hardened, a hairless pink and with folds. The rynsay was a migratory bird that passed through the Okoli Caldera on their way to the Natye desert twice every year.

The rynsay's wingspan could stretch for over five feet on each side. The bird could generate enormous power and lift with each flap of its wings allowing it to carry off large cattle in flight. It had two large clawed talons that could grasp and attack with equal effectiveness and a hardened beak that could peck out eyes and hearts. The bird was a dusty golden in color, these golden plumes were regularly incorporated in the clothes of the nobility and could fetch high prices in the local markets.

They lived off the wildlife of the region during their short stay and flew off to their breeding grounds in the south once they had their fill of the local wildlife.
