Geography
The Nicuran Coniferous Forest was geographically located between the Icy Hills of Jakyla to the north and the Haetran Fen to the south. The landscape of the place was dominated by large coniferous trees that covered almost every inch of these lands. The terrain was very diverse and included low lying plains and towering mountains, hills and cliffs. The dense vegetation coupled with the uneven ground made this terrain very hard to navigate and doubly increased the difficulty in building roads or finding direct paths between any two locations.
The highest point in the region was the Cumac peak to the North, that commanded a full view of the region and into the Jakyla in the North. It offered a commanding position for anyone occupying it and was the source of many conflicts and battles among the native clans. The unpredictable ground could fall off into sheer rock cliffs that were a smattering of white and gray. The rock was regularly mined by some clans who used in limited numbers for construction of structures such as cairns and housing.
The soil in most parts of the region was very fertile and supported a wide variety of wild vegetation including a variety of crops which were planted in many clearings across the Nicuran forest. The region was drained by many small rocky streams and rivers that flowed down from the elevated grounds in the norths. They passed through many valleys and cliffs forming spectacular waterfalls and springs hidden in the middle of forests. These streams originated from the snow capped peaks of the northern Nicuran and the adjoining peaks of the Jakyla region.
They were also sustained by the year round rainfall that the region received. The Nicuran experienced two kinds of season in a year- summer and winter. In summer, the region experienced a moderately cold climate with a lot of rainfall. The sky was covered in gray clouds for almost every day of the season. In mornings and evenings, a low fog cloud descended over the region and enveloped it in a fine gray mist that greatly hindered visibility. What little crop grew in the region was planted during the beginning of this season and harvested before the end.
The wet and cold climate was an acquired taste among most and regularly deterred many people from settling in the region. In winter, the Nicuran grew cold and experienced plenty of snowfall in the northern reaches of the region. This froze the upper reaches of the streams and rivers that originated in the mountains of the region severely limiting the amount of water. The severe winter temperatures were a major cause for the development of cracks and faults in the surfaces of many rock mountains and cliffs in the region.
The conditions were milder in the other regions of the Nicuran. The fog would intensify and could sometimes last entire days without subsiding. During this season, most of the crops and grasses would wither away while the conifer trees remained standing in their full colors.
Plants
The vegetation of the Nicuran coniferous like its name suggest was mostly composed of coniferous trees. These trees were hardy and strong and could survive the cold winters of the region. They shed their leaves during the brutal winters like other vegetation of the region and come alive with the summer rains. The Nicuran is covered with vegetation from its tree tops down to soil. Shrubs, roots and thorns cover the forests floors making many parts inaccessible without setting the region aflame.
The abundance of mature and quality wood resources was one of the reasons why the Galroda decided to move into these lands. The main vegetation of the Nicuran coniferous forest includes the acheem tree, the odyni and the tai'ack. The acheem was the most common type of coniferous tree found in the Nicuran forest. It was characterized by its tall and lanky frame which rose above the forest floor to an average height of fifty feet. Their unique blueish green leaves shaped like needles easily identified them from other trees in their region.
They bore cones that were valuable among the locals as fragrance. They were among the tallest trees in the region and the most suitable for use in construction work. Their wood was known for its strong properties. It was reliable and resistant to rot and could withstand the effects of humidity, dust and worms. The odyni was another coniferous tree that was easily found in the Nicuran forest. It was shorter than the acheem and grew to an average height of around twenty feet. It had a stouter bark and its branches extended more sideways than upwards. The tree bore cones that produced a natural oil, that made for good kindling.
Its bark and wood were known for their water resistant properties and could easily catch and support fires despite the amount of rainfall in the region. The odyni wood mainly served as firewood for many zu'aan natives who had lived in the forests for centuries. Their susceptibility to flames also made them a natural hazard during lightning storms when a stray bolt could easily pick out one of these trees and lead to massive forest fires. Despite this vulnerability, the odyni could easily grow back from the ashes of burnt up forests and reach maturity within a decade.
The tai'ack was a crop that was grown in small clearings all throughout the Nicuran forest. It was native to the region and could survive in the low light conditions as well as the excess rains that the region received. The stalks were thick and had seeds all along their stems that would turn bright red bulds as they matured. Their taste was likened to that of meat and could easily the suit the palate of conventional meat-eating people. This made them a popular food option among both zu'aan and kin'toni of the region.
They could reach heights of up to eight foot and had large leaves at the top end of their stalks that shielded the young seeds from the direct force of the pelting raindrops.
Animals
The Nicuran Coniferous Forest was home to many kinds of animals including savage packs of predators and harmless cattle. A common feature among all these animals was their ability to survive both the incessant amounts of rainfall and the biting cold that could set in once winter came. The most prominent wildlife of the region included the echeu, the wor'er and the ialdu. The echeu were wild animals that could be found all over the Nicuran forest. They travelled in groups and were known for their guile and intelligence.
They communicated through deep growls and could effectively bring down larger creatures and more fearsome beasts as a pack. They were dreaded as a menace that plagued all routes and lands within the forests. The echeu were agile and swift on their limbs and capable of chasing down all manner of prey or fleeing when they were outnumbered. Their claws were retractable and short and lacked any purpose as an offensive tool. Most of the damage was done through their strong jaws and large razor sharp teeth that lined their mouth.
Their skin was covered in a matted layer of thick and black fur that could easily repel the rain and retain their bodies warmth. It also enlarged their figure and gave them a more intimidating appearance along with their red eyes. They could grow in length to almost seven foot and stood at a heigh of around three feet. They were tenacious as pack hunters and feared for their lack of self-preservation and willingness to continue attacking despite any wounds or disadvantage.
The wor'er was a bipedal mammal that could weight a massive three hundred pounds and stood at over seven foot. It was a fearsome but less aggressive predator that only hunted when hungry or angered. Its weight was mostly due to the size of their large bones and the layers of fat, muscle and thick skin that offered them protection from all the elements as well as attacks. They had fangs that protruded on either side of their jaw as well as a distinctive green tongue that was a result of some hereditary complex.
They spent most of the coldest winter months in hibernation and roamed the lands during the summers. The wor'er relished the rain and were known to be more active on rainy days. Their attacks relied on the strength of their arms to claw apart their prey and threats alike but rarely fed on the carcass themselves. They were known to prefer the fish and wild shrubs that grew along the forest floors. The ialdu was a domesticated animal that was reared as cattle by most tribes of the Nicuran.
They were easy to maintain and could provide both blood and meat, making them valuable resources to both zu'aan and kin'toni alike. They had thick wooly skin that was used in the creation of cloaks and coats that could withstand the rain and cold. The Ialdu also had strong horns that were made of a hard organic substance that could be carved to form very reliable and effective spear or arrowheads.
