Geography
The Nalrod Red Rock Mountains, like its name, are mostly red. There are shades of orange, especially as the sun sets, and brown as well. There are various minerals within the mountain. The highest peak of the mountains stretches up to roughly 4,923 feet. The peaks of these mountains don’t come to a sharp point like others. Instead, they are mostly flat with some stretching up further than the others. The sun can be seen peeking through the gaps in the peaks. The base of the mountains covers a span of around 2,000 square kilometers. The entire region, both mountain and the land around it, takes up roughly 3,521 square kilometers. There’s a canyon towards the west of the mountain, where Usttor City is located.
The canyon is nearly two hundred feet deep and over three hundred feet wide. A river running through the canyon is the main source of water for most of the life inhabiting the mountain. It’s almost thirteen feet wide but only about six feet deep, enough for fish to swim through. The water has a red, sometimes orange look to it thanks to the red rocks and sediment that make up the river bed. There are a few small streams scattered around the mountain as well, but they are usually dominated by animals. The soil on the mountain is fertile, allowing it to support a wide range of flowers, grasses, and trees. Some of the flowers grow in high altitudes while others grow at the base.
Most of the plant life is in shades of red, orange, and yellow, but there are other colors as well. This biome also supports many different species of animals. A healthy mix of herbivores and carnivores make up the population, along with a few omnivores. There are animals that have made their homes inside of the mountains and the canyon in caves, some of which have tunnels leading through the mountain beneath the ground. Some live at the very top, preferring the cool, high altitudes. The climate varies depending on the season and the levels of elevation. There are usually just a few degrees of difference between each level, but there can be a difference of over thirty degrees between the base and the highest peak.
The higher one goes in altitude, the color the temperature becomes. The temperature floats between an average of sixty to eighty degrees for the more moderate days. Summers can bring hot temperatures of up to a hundred degrees during the day and can drop to the low fifties at night. The air is usually extremely dry during this season. Winter can bring low fifties during the day and low twenties at night, even dropping lower than that on some nights. Snow, while it doesn’t happen often, still happens. Sometimes, it will even get cold enough for ice to form. Snow at the peak of the mountain is more likely to happen. Rainfall is also not a common occurrence in the mountains.
Plants
The soil on Nalrod Red Rock Mountains is fertile and able to support a wide range of plant life. Most of the plant life sits around the middle to lower areas of the mountain, but there are some species that only grow at high altitudes. Oopruin is a medium sized, orange and red, flower that grows on the sides of the mountains at high altitudes. Its stretched, tear shaped petals form a rosette shape. It has large, red, spear shaped leaves. Its white roots cling to the rock sides. The roots push out from within cracks in the mountain side, and have an extremely strong grip on the surface of the rock. They bloom year round. They glow at night, lighting up several spots of the mountain in bright orange and red.
Even the roots glow a little bit. Oopruin is unable to grow in any other area of the mountain. Every part of the flower, including the root, is edible. Curcuma is a large, peachy colored flower that can be found all over the mountain. It has almost two dozen, ligulate shaped petals that are almost a foot in length and half a foot in width. The edges of the petals are serrated. Curcuma sits in the middle of large, dark green, narrow, round leaves that are layered on top of each other in an upward spiral. It produces a sickeningly sweet smell. The flower can be used to create anti-venom for a ecvian bite. It can also, by itself, can be used to ease fevers and headaches.
It can’t be used on its own to make the anti-venom, it has to be mixed with the venom of the ecvian and another flower called pandorana. Pandorana is a small, white, five petal flower native to the mountain. A ring of bright red circles around the inside of the flower, about midway down the peta. It has stretched, triangle shaped, green leaves. This is the third ingredient in the anti-venom for ecvian bites. The problem that comes with pandorana is that it only blooms in the winter, it grows in small numbers, and it can be difficult to get to as they usually grow inside the caves that ecvian inhabit. To make a truly effective and fast working anti-venom, a fully matured pandorana is necessary. If the flower is too young, it won’t be as effective and can actually be fatal to the zu’aan.
Uphaire is one of the few trees scattered around the mountain. It stretches up nearly twelve feet and spreads out like a fan at its top. It has reddish brown, smooth bark and a thick trunk. This tree mainly grows around the middle of the mountains, but some find their way at the peaks. Small, bright, orange flowers bloom within the thick, green foliage. They have three round petals, which are edible. These flowers give off a medicinal smell and have a bitter taste to them. They are mainly used for easing nausea. The leaves on uphaire falls off during the winter and the flowers wither.
Animals
Nalrod Red Rock Mountains are home to a large variety of animals. Mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and insects of all types and sizes inhabit the region. There are even a few fish swimming in the canyon river. Birds rule the higher altitudes and large mammals the middle to lower regions. Most animals, those with keener senses, tend to stay away from the zu’aan of Usttor City. Ullavine are large birds with two sets of wings and four incredibly sharp claws on each foot. Their top set of wings span nearly twelve feet across while the bottom span almost ten. Their extra set of wings make them incredibly fast. Their claws are said to be sharp enough to cut through rock.
Their thin feathers, a nice reflection of their environment, are a mix of reds, oranges, and browns. These birds stand at a height of nearly seven feet, making them one of the largest animals and the largest birds in the mountain. As scavengers, their diet consists of decay. They especially love preying on the bodies of zu’aan that have been sacrificed. They make their nests on the peaks of the mountains, as high up as they can get. Ullavine can lay up to five large eggs after a mating. Even baby ullavine are large in size, hatching at a height of over a foot. Ecvian are a rare breed of reptile native to Nalrod. They have long, stretched bodies reaching lengths of almost sixteen feet for the fully matured.
Their rounded scales have the ability to camouflage, so they are often in shades of red, orange, and brown to match the mountain. The end of their tail splits off into two. Their fangs produce venom that can paralyze a full grown zu’aan. Being bitten by one of these is almost a certain death if anti-venom isn’t used in time. Ecvian prefer the dark, so they usually live in caves within the canyon at the bottom of the mountain. Their diets consist of other reptiles, small mammals, and the occasional bird. During most of the summer, they stay within the canyon. During the winter, they can often be seen all around the mountain. Female ecvian can lay up to fifteen eggs at a time.
Eosant are a large breed of four legged mammal that can weigh up to two hundred pounds. Their bodies are slim, but packed with muscles, allowing them to reach speeds of almost seventy miles per hour. They stand at a shoulder height of almost eight feet. With their feathery tail, they have a length of six feet. Their light red fur is incredibly thin during the summer time, as the temperatures get really high. During the winter, they grow a winter coat that allows them to handle the cold. The color also turns to a darker red. Eosant are one of the largest carnivores on the mountain and they pretty much prey on all the other animals, big and small. As long as it has a heartbeat, the eosant will eat them.
They live in natural caves on the sides of the mountain, where females give birth to up to four young.
