Geography

Lyrodrak Cold Roofed Forest is a mostly flat region that is almost completely covered by native trees. The trees form a thick canopy that is often compared to a roof. This canopy is home to many of the native animals and is also used by the local Quahat kin’toni clan to observe the comings and goings of other kin’toni. The region is mostly sustained by a series of two large rivers which flow through Lyrodrak. These rivers originate from far in the north and bring cold but very clean and fresh water into the normally dry region. These two rivers meet at a central point in Lyrodrak where they from into Lake Laminus. The largest river in Lyrodrak is called the Laminus as well.

This river comes into Lyrodrak through the north-eastern border. It then runs diagonally across the region, in the middle of its route it meets the other major river in Lydrodrak, The Amenes. The Amenes is smaller than the Laminus River but it is known for being far deeper. It is also home to some of the more dangerous creatures that roam the region. Lake Laminus is the central point where both rivers meet each other. Both of them continue on afterwards on their separate paths. The Lake itself is very deep and generally is quite murky.

There are a few species of fish that live in it, but most are not native and come from other regions that the two-river pass through. The Lake is mostly covered by the forest canopy along with most of the stuff in Lyrodrak. During the cold winter months Lake Laminus usually freezes over completely and the local Quahat kin’toni often go skating on it for fun. On one side of the lake lies the Quahat kin’toni clans’ main fortress, Karaji. Karaji is made of wood but it is several metres deep and smothered in local plant sap which makes it so the wood cannot catch fire.

It has three layers of walls, the outer being the thickest but also the shortest. Each wall has a protected walkway from which guards can look out for attackers as well as fire arrows from protected positions that are strategically placed along each wall. The second wall is higher than the first so that arrows can be launched from it whilst the first wall is under assault. It also means that if the first wall is taken the second one is higher up and the attackers can not jump across or shoot down. There is one gate into the fortress, but it is not actually located in the fortress itself.

The entrance is small and can only fit one kin’toni abreast inside it. It is a small tunnel that can be entered from a small, easily concealed entrance a kilometre away from the fort itself. This tunnel can be collapsed in case of an attack through it. Inside the walls is a small town that the local Quahat kin’toni have dedicated to helping those in need.

Plants

Lyrodrak Cold Roofed Forest is mostly made of the native trees which form the roof-like canopy above most of the region. However, the region also contains many other forms of plants. Many of these plants have medicinal purposes or serve the local Quahat kin’toni clan in other ways.

Tharnishmaris

Tharnishmaris are a species of aquatic plant that are native and unique to Lyrodrak Cold Roofed Forest. These plants are found in the two rivers that run through the region as well as in Lake Laminus. They generally grow along the sides and bottom of the rivers and lake. tharnishmaris are dark green and purple in colour and generally take a circular shape. They have large, thick roots which attack the several circular bodies of each plant to solid ground. The green and purple bodies can be seen bobbing in and out of the rivers surface.

Inside these bodies, however, is a thick liquid that somewhat resembles zu’aan blood. It is the same colour but is far thicker and worse smelling. This liquid is completely fireproof and is put to use by the local Quahat kin’toni clan. They line the walls of their fort with this liquid so that they will not be able to be set on fire by any attacks. The thick, blood-like liquid is the reason that these plants are called what they are.

Lyrodrak Conifers

Lyrodrak conifers are a species of evergreen conifer that are native and unique to Lyrodrak Cold Roofed Forest. These conifers are extremely common throughout the region are responsible for making the roof-like canopy over the ground beneath them. Each tree can grow to heights of up to sixty metres tall. At their peak they grow many long and thick branches which can cover large areas. All the other conifers around each tree intertwine their branches with each other in a race to get as much sunlight as they can. In doing so they create thick layer of leaves and branches.

The Lyrodrak conifers have brown trunks that change to a dull grey during winter when they lose their leaves. Their leaves are a dark green colour, but this is mostly blocked out by the snow that builds up on top of them in the ceiling canopy. These trees are very hardy and can survive the cold environment in Lyrodrak with ease.

Patinass

Patinass are a species of plant that are native and unique to Lyrodrak Cold Roofed Forest. These plants grow along the ground in the region and have learnt to live with almost no sunlight. They are yellow in colour but turn white during the winter when they shrivel up to hibernate. The can grow to heights of up to two metres during the warmer months of the year. Their yellow leaves are valuable medicinal ingredients. The local Quahat kin’toni clan uses the leaves from these plants to make flesh wound salves as well as several cures for deadly diseases

Animals

Lyrodrak Cold Roofed Forest is home to a wide variety of native wildlife. The rivers and lake in the region are key to most of their survival. There are also some dangerous predators that lurk in the Amenes River. During the winter months many creatures like to go into hibernation until the region warms up again.

Patachino

Patachino are a species of bird that are native and unique to Lyrodrak Cold Roofed Forest. These birds are dark green in colour and prefer to live amongst the thick canopy to stay away from any potential predators. They can grow to be around the size of a wheel and have sharp talons that increase in size as they grow older. They use these talons to hunt creatures that roam the ground below them. The occasionally attack kin’toni who were children when they were turned as they are much smaller. The local Quahat kin’toni clan often hunt these birds with bows and arrows so they can feed on their blood to sustain themselves.

They also don’t want them coming down to attack weak or small refugees who are coming through the region. They sometimes even climb the trees to destroy large patachino nests. However, the Patachino have become very good at hiding their nests and their population does not seem to be affected at all by the Quahat clans’ efforts.

Yaminatas

Yaminatas are a species of small mammal that are native and unique to Lyrodrak Cold Roofed Forest. These small mammals generally like to live in small burrows throughout the region. They move into these burrows permanently during the winter to stay warm and hibernate. They are able to sleep through the entirety of winter unless they are disturbed. These creatures only grow to be around the size of a kin’toni hand. They are covered in light brown fur and have four small legs with either smaller feet. They can travel silently through the undergrowth in Lyrodrak and often move around unseen due to their size.

It takes a Yaminatas several days to fully create its burrow and sometimes they are destroyed by floods of buried by snow.

Saschen

Saschen are a species of aquatic predator that are native and unique to Lyrodrak Cold Roofed Forest. These creatures are long and streamlined. Their spines and lined with several backwards facing spikes large enough to cut through a kin’toni arm. They have long heads with flat, elongated jaws that can fit almost anything living creature in Lyrodrak inside. Their jaws are lined with powerful teeth that are also black like the spikes on their backs. Their bodies are a dark shade of purple that sometimes more closely resembles black.

During the winter months these predators venture out of the water and dig themselves a small hole barely large enough to fit them in. They may be aquatic creatures by their four flippers can also serve as legs and can also let the dig into the ground. These creatures are known to be very hostile towards anything that comes near them.
