Geography

The Lathra mountain forest is a large forest surrounded by tall snow-capped mountains from all sides. The forest in turn surrounds the great Kaelaran sinkhole that is a natural wonder in itself. Seven large rivers course down the surrounding mountains and drain into the sinkhole. These rivers have large sandy banks and form a natural path for travellers and explorers that wish to travel to Kaelaran. The banks are lined with thick green trees and these are the only safe method of transport as the forest is rumoured to be holding the infamous Kyrdian wolves.

These rivers carry precious minerals and dump them into the sinkhole thus making the entire path very fertile, these river banks are lined with precious herbs and plants of extreme medicinal value. One of the most popular fruit in zu'aan, the Totokas grow near these banks. Ancient travellers used to collect them and bring them back to cities. Lathra also has rich flora and fauna and often echoes loudly with the richness of life. All sorts of animals and plants are found here. Some have fur while others have feathers.

Some have teeth while some have beaks, but together they all contribute to this beautiful landscape. The years of rumours have made many places inside the forest be untouched for centuries. The forest during the night is known to glow in certain places. This phenomenon is explained by the presence of a bioluminescent grass that became common due to extensive cultivation by the Qetia Kin'toni Clan. The true nature of the forest is only known to the hidden zu'aan clan who made this forest into their home after barely escaping death in the great battle on the riverbanks.

The rivers begin at the ice caps of the mountains and are a source of water and minerals for the rich vegetation in Lathra. The forest near the mountain has caves that are used by the Qetia Kin'toni Clan as hiding spots. The zu'aan are repelled from these caves by special herbs that grow only inside these caves. There are a total of 3 lakes in the forest that provide drinking water to its inhabitants. The lakes have an extensive ecosystem in themselves. These lakes can be seen from the mountain tops. These are also lined with a thick row of Kurnai trees that are predominant in the forest.

The forest is mostly a hilly region with large rocky mountains surrounding it from all sides. The large barricade of mountains keeps the chilled air out and keeps the climate in Lathra warm and humid. Most of the kin'toni of the Taerel desire to make Lathra their home due to its high natural significance but the fear of the unknown keeps even the bravest kin'toni away. Once in a year, the Kurnai trees bear flowers and the entire forest turns white as if covered by snow.

This scenic view is witnessed by a number of kin'toni posted at checkpoints on the surrounding mountain range. It is said that nothing in Galas Malator can match the beauty of the white shroud that covers Lathra Once every year.

Plants

There are quite a few different kinds of plants in the Lathra Mountain Forest, and they have been known to be scattered across much of the ground. The plants that thrive here are often taken care of quite remarkably by the clan or tribe that live here, and some within this group dedicate their lives to this job, tending to various kinds of plants while taking of what plants are poisonous and what plants aren't. There are at least five different plants that dwell within the Lathra Mountain Forest, and they include the following:

Firstly, a weeping willow is known as the sdrasasdim, which has a strange purple shape about it and also a hidden red glow that is only visible after the plant has been watered sufficiently. If the plant known as the sdrasasdim loses its hue permanently, that's not a good sign; it means that the plant has been dehydrated for too long and its leaves will crumble into foliaged dust, thus leading to the death of the said plant. Typically, these plants are known to last for a life span of around seven to eight years when watered once every day, but the longest-lived plant had a life span of double that, roughly fifteen years, before losing its glow and dying of old age.

Not much is known about the next plant, but the bitilfra, thrives in the sunlight and can typically withstand the sun's UV rays for as long as a week at a time; but, they need about a gallon of water each in order to not brown up in dehydration. These plants aren't watered very much, but they do need sunlight to survive; anything short of ten hours daily would cause them to develop abnormally. The third plant is also the plant that needs the most care: the vyzxerso is a white shining tulip that requires the use of occasional blood-letting as part of its watering cycle.

For every three times, a plant of this type is watered, a few droplets of Kin'toni blood must be poured on the stem in order for the vyzxerso to retain its shine. Failure to do this results in that plant having a much shorter lifespan. This next-to-last known plant, known as a ryatres-dri, is a lavender clover that has six leaves on it and, because of its poisonous effects and size, requires the use of very thick garden gloves to water it. This plant is also high-maintenance, as it requires also daily watering.

The last known and eponymous plant of the Lathra Mountain Forest, known as a Lathra, of course, is also the least populated and is considered by many in the mountainous forest to be an endangered plant, most likely due to a combination of warfare and the toxins that entered the atmosphere post-Shattering. Before the Shattering, this plant was quite populous and strong in numbers.

Animals

Despite the dangers that lurk in the Laithra Mountain Forest many species of animals call it their home. Of special note is the great auklear which makes its home in the sdrassdim willow. Despite its size, the auklear's iridescent purple feathers allow it to hide within the fronds of the willow. The auklear has a wingspan of up to five feet and prefers the meat of the duacaan. The duacaan live on the floor of the Latithra Mountain Forest and serve as meals for many of the inhabitants. Able to breed every few months, the duacaan would be able to overrun the forest in short order if not kept in check by the other inhabitants.

Unaffected by the virus, they prefer the hardy grasses that grow upon the forest floor. Many of the other species prefer meat and blood over grasses and flowers such as the korinthan. The korinthans bear a passing resemblance to the wolves that disappeared. They hunt the Laithra Mountain forest in packs and will take on an unwary kin'toni as quickly as they will a duacaan. Many of the winged species that call the Laithra Mountain Forest their home stay airborne during the dark nights, safe from the predatory horde that fills the air with their howls and shrieks.

While it is uncommon to see a winged beast during the daylight hours in the sky above the forest as they take this time to sleep, the night sky is filled with the rhythmic beat of their wings. Even the great auklear sleeps by day and hunts by night. Of all the animals found in the Laithra Mountain Forest, both great and small, the most deadly is the b'hing. Barely the size of flower seed, the b'hing can completely overtake a species. Once it finds a hold, either in fur or feather, the b'hing painlessly eats its way into the host until it can overtake their systems.

The b'hing will control its host, slowly feeding on it from the inside until there is nothing left. It leaves its spawn which waits for a new host to appear and serve its purpose. As the kin'toni have slowly felled the trees of the forest, the winged and pawed species that call the forest home are slowly being driven closer together resulting in many territorial fights. Diminishing resources around the outer edges have driven many further in where there are creatures that have never before been seen by anyone.

There has been suspicion that it is these creatures that lend the glow that can be seen during the night. This suspicion has remained only suspicion as no one that has ever tried to find the source came back.
