Geography

Kerodlor Iron Beach sits on the far southwestern coast of Taerel. It spans an area of around 23,875 square kilometers. The sand of the beach is a silver color thanks to the sediment and organisms, and it has a cold and coarse texture to it. Small, sharp rocks are also scattered throughout the sand. There is a large cave opening right on the beach, just short of two hundred feet from where the sea meets the sand. Within the opening lies a complex and interconnected cave system. The maze of pathways can be difficult to navigate and can be dangerous if not careful. Some of the pathways have narrow walkways that have drops of almost a hundred feet. While there are a few entrances to the caves in the sea, they are inaccessible as they are completely submerged.

The current can be hard to get past, and those caves are home to some aquatic animals. Along the southern edge of the beach are small cliffs that are about two to almost three hundred feet above the sea. While they can be accessed from inland, they are impossible to climb from the sea. There are hardly any places to cling on to, and there are dangerous waves that crash into the rocks during both high and low tide. The waves are powerful enough to rip someone apart. Due to its location in Taerel, the region has a polar climate. It is persistently cold nearly year round. Winters drop temperatures to the low twenties, sometimes dropping to the negatives at night. Summers rise only to the upper thirties.

It’s cloudy year round, bringing about snow and rain constantly. The temperature of the sea is usually in the mid-twenties. Its position also makes large chunks and long slabs of ice in the sea and on the beach a common sight. Some of the slabs that are a bit away from the beach are almost three hundred feet across and ten feet deep. Some of the chunks are almost sixty feet high and thirty feet wide. They’re solid and impossible to break through with the current technology. This can make getting into the beach from the sea quite difficult, along with the jagged rocks jutting up from the sea floor. These rocks can be seen along the entire coast. Some jut out almost seventy feet beyond the surface of the sea.

They’re sharp enough to pierce through bodies and boats. Plant life is extremely scarce due to its location, climate, and terrain. On the beach itself, there are a few tough grasses. Within the sea, there is a larger variety, but most are inedible or hard to get to. On the other hand, animal life is plentiful. About ninety percent are aquatic species, while the rest are land. There are even a species of flightless bird that can often be found lazing around on the chunks of ice. Most of the animals are carnivorous due to lack of plant life and some can be aggressive towards zu’aan.

Plants

Plant life in the Kerodlor Iron Beach is scarce. The coarse sand doesn’t make for a suitable place for vegetation to grow in abundance. The harsh climate also plays a role in the scarcity of plant growth. Most of the aquatic plants are inedible, but there are some with medicinal benefits. Axirin is a species of grass that can only be found in cold coastal regions like this. It grows up to three feet tall, with thick, perforated, silver and blue stalks that grow in thick clumps. The stalks are strong, but also soft and pliable. When mature, the ends become a light blue tuft. Axirin can be found all over the beach. It is inedible and has no medicinal benefits.

The zu’aan use it to insulate their clothing, weave baskets, make shoes, to cover the cave floors, and to make nets to catch fish and other aquatic species. They cut the ends off to use as cushion for the sewn pouches they make for pillows. Axirin is probably the most abundant and fast growing plant in the region, so there is plenty to use. Scelk are small flowers native to the region. They only bloom once a year in the summer for about a month. They grow up to about two inches tall. Their dark blue stem is thick and slightly curved at the end. They have wide, square-shaped, dark blue leaves with white, smooth edges. The flower heads are about an inch wide. They have two layers of tear-shaped, purple and dark red petals.

The lower layer is red and the curve slightly upwards at their ends. The upper layer is purple and curves upwards to make a tight bowl. There are around twenty petals on the lower layer and around ten on the top. They grow in groups of ten to twelve. While scelk is edible, they have a bland taste. Instead of consuming it, the zu’aan mix it into a salve that can help slow the effects of frostbite. There is a slight burning sensation when applied to affected areas. Scelk can be found growing all over one of the middle caves. They release a slight glow to them when they are in bloom. Kelda are small flowers that grow directly on rocks under the sea. They can grow anywhere from a few feet below the surface of the sea, so close to the beach, to about thirty feet below the surface.

They grow about four inches tall and range from three to six inches in length. They can come in light colors of purple, blue, red, and orange. They have five petals that are of similar shape to slightly stretched seashells. There is a thin stripe of white that goes around the serrated edges and down the middle of the petals to the center. The petals have a hard, but smooth texture in order to survive the cold depths. Kelda are one of the few edible aquatic plants in the region. Beyond the salt, they have a slight sweet taste to them. The zu’aan usually cook them with fish. They have no medicinal benefits.

Animals

There is a wide range of animal life within the Kerodlor Iron Beach, with aquatic species making up ninety percent. Despite the cold, there are very few species with fur. Instead, they have thick skin or scales that act as a buffer. Most of the species here can only survive in cold climates like this. Fign are a species of aquatic mammal that can seen in the water and on land and are native to the region. They grow to about six feet long and can weigh up to almost a hundred pounds. They have four flippers that are about two feet long each and a wide tail that helps them swim fast. There’s a slightly curved, sail-like dorsal fin with thin, red spikes that are long at the front and shorter towards the back. This fin is about a foot tall and three feet long. Their thick, smooth skin is a silvery purple on the top and dark purple on the bottom, with their fins being a light purple and blue mix.

They have large, round, red eyes that are capable of seeing in the dark of the sea. Their heads are large and wide with a slightly stretched snout. Fign are carnivorous and are one of the most dangerous animals in the region. They are usually pretty docile, often just lazing around on the beach or on the ice. They only attack when provoked and their sharp rows of teeth can easily slice through skin and muscle. They mate twice a year, with a single life partner, and females can give birth to up to two young. Teruin are a species of large aquatic species. They grow to about nine feet in length and can weigh up to almost three hundred pounds. They have slender, tube-like bodies with a long dorsal fin along most of their backs.

Four limbs with webbed feet and a tail with a wide end aid their movement through the water. They have thick, rough, black skin with streaks of silvery blue. Their yellow eyes have horizontal pupils, which give them a wide range of sight. They also rely on the vibrations in the water to detect danger. Their heads are small compared to their bodies. While they are carnivores, they prey on small fish as their stomachs are relatively small. They can open their mouths wide, allowing them to take in a lot of fish at a time. They make low pitched sounds to communicate with each other. Despite their size, they are docile and only lash out to protect themselves.

They stay pretty close to the beach and are often swimming in the submerged caves. They partner for life and usually mate once a year. Females can lay up to three eggs per mating. Krali are a common species of small fish known to inhabit cold regions. They grow to about eight inches and barely weigh a pound. They have two side fins that are wispy and shaped like fans. Their thin, dark purple skin is covered in thick, coarse, white and blue scales with rounded edges. They have two sets of small eyes, but their vision is pretty poor. They rely on vibrations to get around and escape danger. Their heads are small and long, with four small barbels jutting from their bottom lips.

Krali usually travel in large schools of nearly two thousand. Despite their small size, they are known to be aggressive. They have a row of sharp teeth that aid them in their carnivorous diets. They attack just about every aquatic species in the region, ganging up like a swarm to take them down. The only species they don’t bother are the fign. Krali are all female and reproduce asexually. They reproduce several times a year and can lay up to two hundred every time.
