Geography

The Japer White Flowers Grove can be thought of as a sort of mid-point between other lands in place of a land in its own right. Bordered by high mountains to the north and denser and largely unnavigable forest to the south and east, the only easy route in is from the west. Those attempting the trek will quickly finds themselves on the White Jasper Road. Despite its name, the ‘road’ is more of a forest trail where the trees are a bit less dense than normal. Straying off the path could lead you into the deeper, more dangerous parts of the forest.

As such, the Daold tribe has been careful to dot the road with way stations and ambush sites. No one reaches the end of the road without those there knowing full well ahead of time. At the end of the road is the sole town of the Jasper White flower grove. Woodsbase is a mess of a settlement, with buildings built to go around trees and other natural features without much heed to order or civil planning. Fitting for a town that started as a simple research base. Despite it being the only settlement in the region, Woodsbase is only home to half of the Daold tribe.

The rest live in small shacks scattered around the Grove. Despite the solitude, these lone tribes’ members are no hermits. It is common for them to gather at woodsbase to gather news, report findings and trade for supplies. The Grove itself is mostly made of high trees that tower of those living under them. These trees are mostly evergreens who don’t lose leaves even in the coldest of winters. Not that these winters are all that cold. The mountains to the north keep the cold winds from the north at bay, giving the Grove comfortable temperatures year round.

These mountains to the north also serve a second vital role. It is from these mountains that three rivers form and flow through the Grove. The first two pass through the White Jasper Road, leaving the Daold tribe little choice but to build small bridges to across to allow travelers and the occasional trade caravans through. These bridges also serve a second role, acting as choke points in the face of any sort of incursion by outsiders. An invading force either needs to cross a small bridge and leave themselves vulnerable, or take time to chop down trees and make boats, leaving them even more vulnerable. These second option also means gaining the ire of the Daold Tribe.

Those few to attempt this path quickly found themselves slaughtered to the last man. The last of these rivers is also the largest and acts as a border between the Grove and the denser forest on the other side. The town of Woodsbase clings to Eastern bank of the river, and a good chunk of the food produced from the settlement comes from the small farms hugging the river to the south. The Daold Tribe took advantage of the sparseness around the river in this area to set up these farms while dealing as little damage to the Grove as possible.

Plants

With its wet climate and mild winters, the Jasper White Flowers grove is home to many useful and notable plant species, even if the flowers it’s named after tends to hog the spotlight in the eyes of outsides. Despite this, the Daold Tribe know full well the value of the other plants in their domain.

Japer White Flowers

By far the most well-known plants of the Japer White Flower Grove are the japer white flowers which give the Grove its name. Well coveted for its myriad properties, the flowers were instrumental in the founding of the settlement. The flowers themselves grow in large patches under shade of larger trees, as they tend to dry out under the harsh sun. As such, members of the Daold Tribe tend to grow them along with a second crop of fruiting, or wood proving trees in order to maximize the use of space and limit damage to the Grove.

Aside from their aesthetic value, the japer white flowers are prized for their use in perfumes, anesthetics, sedatives, and even religious aids. With the near constant research done on them by the Daold Tribe, it probably won’t be long until even further uses for this amazing plant are found.

Makla Trees

Perhaps the second most vital plant in the grove, even if no outside king is ready to launch a war over it. makla trees are a vital food source for the Daold Tribe for their unique property. They produce fruit year-round, and because the trees don’t synchronize their fruiting, they can act as a staple food source year round. It doesn’t hurt that makla fruit has a subtle and slightly sweet taste, making it both good as a stand-alone food, as well as an ingredient in other dishes.

The trees themselves are quite tall, reaching almost six meters in height with several fruit bearing branches spreading out from a central trunk. The leaves are broad and surprisingly thick, often finding themselves cut up and turned into plates, or turned into sturdy, is short lived, umbrellas.

Ikoani

An odd plant, infamous among the Daold Tribe who try to keep the plant a secret from outsides. Only found at the very top of the groves tallest trees, these symbiotic vines grow on the tree’s limbs and protect them from larger herbivores by producing a dangerous toxin in its leaves. This toxin is fatal to anything the size of a human and extremely unpleasant to anything large enough to reach high and start eating the trees at the top of the trees. While the violent nature of the vines would be enough to get most of the Daold Tribe in agreement to hide the vines, this is not the true reason for the secrecy.

The Grove is always in danger of outsides, and with such a low population, the Daold Tribe has no choice but to engage in asymmetrical warfare. As such, ambushes using arrows coated in ikoani toxin are a standard tactic. However such ambushes must be made carefully, as to not reveal the secret.

Animals

While settled by Botanists, the Jasper White Grove has its fair share of fascinating animals to go with its plants. While the Daold Tribe focuses on the plants, it has more than a few zoologists among its ranks.

Toi.

The largest of the fauna of the White Jasper Flower Grove, and the only native animal large enough to reach the trees above. A rare form of hornless toi, these forest giants prefer to use their large size and surprising speed to deal with predators. Despite how at home they are in the Grove, it is not their only territory. They spend roughly half the year in the denser forest’s that surround the Grove, only entering the grove to give birth and raise their fauns in the relative safely of the grove. Once these young are old enough to keep up with their mothers, they return to the denser forest and its abundant food.

Toi hunts are a rare occurrence for the Daold Tribe. But very rarely, a fully grown male will enter the Grove. They tend to be highly territorial and dangerous. They’ve also been known to kill fauns in order to make their mothers available again. Fauns born from such incidents tend to not have enough time to grow before they have to return to the denser forest. As such the Daold Tribe has made the decision to hunt down these rogue males. These hunts are welcome as they usually mean a large increase in meat availability.

Dirik

A smaller than normal species of rik, common within the Groove as well as the denser forest that surround it. These ravenous hares help keep the Grove clear of underbrush, keeping the danger of fires low in the region. They are also prolific breeders, giving the Daold tribe a near guilt free supply of meat. Despite the lack of underbrush, the hares are quite adept at finding shelter from predators such as saalrik and ikora. They’re wide, shovel-like paws can rapidly dig tunnels and it is not uncommon to find gigantic warrens hidden among the roots of ancient trees.

In fact these warrens can sometimes grow large enough to host a swarm of rik, attracting the attention of larger predators such as nathri which have recently arrived to the area.

Varkamathri

These large birds are known for three things among the Daold tribe. The first is their shrill cries which mark the beginning of the day and the coming of dawn. The second is they’re distinct red crest on their head, a needed tool to acquire a mate. The last and most important, is their gigantic clutches. Unlike other birds, varkamathri use a different strategy. Instead of laying a few eggs and making sure they hatch, varkamathri lay many eggs across multiple nests in the hope that at least some will survive. As such, the Daold tribe can take a few eggs from a clutch without worrying about potential damage to the bird’s population.

In fact, their numbers have swelled so much in the recent years, that some in the tribe has started pushing to start hunting the birds directly, at least later in the year once the hatchlings have gained the ability to fly.
