Geography
The Fondatiama region was covered in bogs that were formed as a result of the tides that would regularly flow into the region. The region was bordered by the sea on one side while the rest of it consisted of bogs with the occasional high grounds that were covered in all kinds of temperate vegetation. The bogs of the region were some of the most treacherous in tracts of land and could swallow entire zu'aan as well as wildlife and structures. Most of the soil in the region was over saturated with water and was not suitable for the growth of crops.
Thus, the inhabitants of the region relied more on trade and black-markets to bring in their food supplies as well as resources for their needs. The region had a wide variety of wildlife that were accustomed to living in the boggy conditions of the region and could successfully navigate the region without getting stuck in the soft and muddy grounds. The terrain was particularly flat and had no mountains or extreme changes in elevation. The Fondatiama was home to many zu'aan individuals who were mostly involved in some form of illegal activities or were actively evading capture by the authorities.
The region was suited for this purpose because most of the zu'aan clans refused to send their armies or people here, due to the high likelihood of tragedy and loss. There were no permanent paths through the region and experienced guides had to be found to lead people through the safest routes. The inhabitants of this region were very secretive about these paths through the region as they did not want outside interference in the form of trespassing or incursion into these lands.
The settlements in these regions were built over small elevated sections and were mostly made of very light materials such as tent poles and leather hides that were combined together to form makeshift camps. Building large structures was inadvisable in this region due to the very unstable and soft ground that could cave in under heavy weight. The region was most famous for its many slave markets that brought in captives of wars from all over the continent. It was a lucrative trade that would bring in large profits for the region and helped them build up their economy.
Illegal slavers and traders would continually run their goods throughout the region as well as bring in many valuable items from other continents. The region experienced a damp and cold climate for most of the year that would get warmer during the short summer months. The seasons could be divided into summer, monsoon and winter. In summer, the temperatures would hover at around the mid-twenties and the region would experience lots of sunlight. The few vegetation in the region would bloom during this period and provide some fruits and other edible nuts and produce for the residents of the bogs.
This would be followed by the monsoon season when the region would experience constant rainfall along with winds that would continuously blow in from the seas. Many of the storms out at sea would slowly push inland into the Fondatiama bogs. The temperatures would start to drop slowly during this season. The year would be rounded off by the winter season when the region would experience continuous fogs and mist that would cover the lands. The temperatures would drop to single digits during this season and the people would have to wearing many layers of thick fur.
As well as huge bonfires to stave off the cold and hypothermia from the wet and damp of their surroundings.
Plants
The Fondatiama region was home to a small variety of plants that were adapted to survive in the cold and damp conditions of the region. The temperatures and conditions could deteriorate very quickly once the summers were over. During this period, the trees had to deal with the excessive rainfalls as well as the storms and heavy winds that would rage across the region. Certain adaptations included the long and deeply entrenched roots that kept them planted to the surface as well as help them absorb nutrients and minerals from a wider area.
Some of the most famous vegetation in the region included the famous kimk coniferous tree, The banves reeds and grasses that grew along the side of bogs and in the coastal parts where the region joined the sea. The Rthskelon tree shrubs were a very hardy variety of shrub that covered the ground of the exposed surfaces in the region while the tepavu was a common plant that grew closer to the sea.The kimk was a coniferous tree that grew along the elevated sections of the Fondatiama region.
It was well adapted to survive and thrive during the colder months when the tree would be in full bloom. The tree had tiny needle like leaves that covered most of its branches and produced many cone-like fruits and nuts that were eaten by many smaller animals and birds that lived on them. The wood of this tree was vital for crafting tools and campsites as well as for use as firewood- which was vital during the colder months of the year. The tree was not very tall and could grow to a maximum height of over ten meters.
It would grow together in large clumps that could provide enough wood for an entire settlement of zu'aan. The soil around these groves were also more stable as a result of the roots of the trees which bound the soil tightly together. Thus, many of the zu'aan camps were built among wooded sections of these kimk trees. The banves were a variety of reed that grew along the sides of the bogs and in the regions bordering the sea. It could grow to a height of fur feet above the surface of the bog and was known for its strong and flexible properties.
It was commonly used to weave a wide variety of zu'aan amenities, including baskets, furniture and even armor. It was light and buoyant and could even be used to build larger rafts and floating platforms. The rthskelon shrubs were a common type of plant that covered the more solid floors of the Fondatiama bogs. They had very thorny stem and tiny pink flowers that grew all along their stems. They made it very hard to navigate across the region and were mostly burnt or used to fence off certain areas.
The repavu was a variety of sea weed that covered most of the coastal parts of the region. They could grow very quickly and cover entire sections of the coastline within months. They would be washed further inland during the tides or storms, where they would serve as a common source of nutrition for both the zu'aan and the wildlife of the region.
Animals
The Fondatiama bogs were filled with a variety of wildlife that could handle the cold and damp conditions of the region. The region also had many migratory species of aquatic life that would show up along its shores during various parts of the year. The zu'aan of the region were extremely reliant on these animals as a food source because of the difficulty of growing food crops in the waterlogged soil of the region. Some of the most common varieties of wildlife in the region included the charra.
A tree dwelling mammal that resembled a sloth, the loziso- an alligator like species that was common to similar species found in marshes and bogs, the ineet- a sea bird that flocked around the shores of the region and the ryn'one a species of large whales that would regularly pass very close to the coastline during the warmer months. The charra was one of the most common animals that could be found among the coniferous trees of the region. They had a very versatile diet and could live off either the needle-like leaves, the pine cones and the nuts and berries that were produced by these trees.
They had prehensile limbs and opposable thumbs that allowed them to scale the trees as well as perform complex maneuvers on them. They were a strictly plant eating species and were very vulnerable to other predators and zu'aan hunters. To compensate for their vulnerability, these animals were very fertile creatures that could multiply their numbers very quickly through the course of a single mating season. They were a valuable source of meat as well as fur which could be used for the creation of clothes as well as tents and other material.
The loziso was an alligator like animal that crawled along its belly and could dig below the surface of some of the deeper sections of the bog. It was a fearsome predator that was both very territorial and aggressive. The beast could grow to a maximum length of over six feet and was regularly hunted by the zu'aan for its skin which was used to create armored clothing. Its meat was also a common dietary item for the zu'aan of the region. The ineet was a distinctive white colored bird that would commonly flock around the coastline of the Fondatiama region.
Its wingspan could extend for over two meters and weigh over thirty pounds. It lived off the fishes in the surrounding waters and was an important sign for sailors, who used them to calculate their proximity to land. The ryn'one was a giant whale-like creature that could stretch for over ten meters from end to end. It was commonly spotted in the waters surrounding the coastline during the warmer summer months. It was a migratory species and the zu'aan had very limited interactions with this creature owing to their limited sea-faring capabilities.
They would observe them from their coasts and were in wonder of their large size and their beaching behaviors. Some of these stranded ryn’one were valuable sources of blubber and fat which could be used to fuel fires.
