Geography

The geography of the grasslands of Ennytai changed drastically through the Shattering. Situated in a basin at the south western base of one of the north eastern mountain ranges and fed buy the run off from a manufactured lake atop the nearest mountain peak, the region saw much growth activity due to its fertile soil. Many towns and villages settled in the region’s western and southern areas and used the central areas as farmland while the northern and eastern areas were directly controlled by the Xerea Empire for their mass crop production.

For many years the area was a thriving and vibrant place that spoke to the joyful peace that was soon to come to a saddening end. For with the fall of the Empire came the Shattering, and in the case of Ennytai, that was quite literal. Shortly after the fall of the Empire, when the world was still unsure what had been set in motion, the numerous structural damage done to the now abandoned dam that had made the lake and created a river through the grasslands had finally gave way to the pressure. The dam crumbled and the entire lake spilled out and flooded the region.

Nothing survived the flood. The soil was ripped from the ground and the land was beaten and moulded into new shapes as the waters swirled and churned in the aftermath of the Shattering. The waters settled and began to slowly drain away. The process was long and slow and much of the old soil was dispersed and drifted away with the overflow. Once the water was gone the land began to regrow. However, the soil was now a thin mix of chalk and limestone slate which was unsuitable for the growth that was previously possible. What did grow was stouter, hardier plants that couldn’t provide enough nutrients for prolonged survival.

Because of this, the attempted stationary resettlements continuously failed. Either they were abandoned or the settlers died from the lack of the necessary supplies. This left several ghost towns and villages dotted throughout the now calcareous grasslands. These buildings didn’t fall into disuse due to the small band of nomads that etched out a life through trading and even theft to get the supplies they needed. They maintained the buildings as hideouts for when they were forced to camp for the night. Their reign over the region was ended when the Avaya kin’toni clan attacked and enveloped the band of zu'aan raiders.

They too maintained the structures and raided and traded with those who crossed into their territory. They also built, maintained, and reset numerous traps to catch and hold any of the more curiosity minded travellers. These traps were often just outside or near the centre of the towns and villages, but with easy to miss signals so the clan members can avoid setting them off. Thus turning the once quaint rural farming territory into a place where people could disappear and never be heard from again thank to the kin’toni.

Plants

Much of the vegetation was lost in Ennytai when the Shattering caused the region to be flooded. The lush plains and fields that covered the expanse are now nothing but grassy declines. All the hard work of the initial settlers and the Xerea Empire was utterly demolished by the surging waters. And try as they might, the settlers from after the Shattering were unable to make the new soil be able to produce the necessary crops to make the area liveable for stationary farming settlements. The land simply was no longer suitable for sustaining the lives of large beings that relied on regular crop growth.

The plants that could grow were short and only capable of sustaining small to just barely medium sized animals. One of the common small plants that populates the region is the bloody flower. The stout wildflower was known by its red tipped yellow petals. The small plant was completely edible like the other varieties of its type, however it provided very little to all save the smallest of animals. Though seen as moderately pretty by the zu'aan, the flower was also considered a weed due to its virulent propagation. The calcareous grasslands proved to be the perfect home for this plant.

As not much else was capable of surviving in the thin soil. This made the region lovely to witness but hellish to attempt to survive in. Another hardy plant to withstand the tricky growing conditions of the region is the pale goai or skull faced goai. The ominously named her is so called for the odd skeletal faced markings blemishing its three leaves. However, that is the only ominous part of this rather helpful plant. Those genetically marred leaves can be ingested to help improve digestion. Though like many of the plants of the region after the Shattering, it is unable to sustain the needs of larger beings like the zu'aan.

Instead it is often used as an additive to meals made from supplies gotten from other regions or from visiting travellers. one of the most common plants that resided in the area both before the Shattering as well as after it is the bullgrass. This stubborn grass grows in wild jagged shoots and often is confused for being proof of the possibility that crops can survive in the region. However, bullgrass has little to no nutritional value for zu'aan or kin’toni and can grow in regions and environments that can kill even other plants that thrive in the thin soil of the Ennytai region.

Instead this grass is now seen as the giver of false hope and only good to be grazed upon by animals. In the Ennytai region the grass is the main vegetation throughout the entire territory and provides sustenance for the animals kept by the nomadic groups that have controlled the area. First the zu'aan raiders and then the kin’toni clan.

Animals

The wildlife of Ennytai used to be rich and diverse due to the lush vegetation of the area. But that was before the Shattering. Before, there was many animals roaming freely throughout the plains and fields. After the Shattering only the smallest of the creatures were able to repopulate the area. Because of this there was little interest in hunting the animals that thrived in the region. The settlers attempted to reintroduce domesticated animals into the ecosystem, but only the animals capable of grazing on the hardy plants were able to survive.

There has been a reappearance of the smaller carnivorous birds since the Shattering, as they are the most prevalent predators of the wildlife that can survive off the vegetation. One of the smallest and most common of the animal residents of Ennytai is the yakua dorish. Thes tiny rodents are so small they can survive on the smallest of nutrients provided by a diet of vegetation and insects. Other than their diminutive stature this particular breed of vole is recognised for its dark brown fur and white markings. They are very docile and reclusive due to nearly every other creature being much bigger than they are.

Often they make nests out of dead vegetation so it can blend in with the rest of the grassy landscape. When in the wild they are often seen to live in large family clusters for safety and will avoid spots with trimmed or no vegetation to avoid one of the many birds that prey on them and others of their stature. These tiny critters are also known to have been domesticated and kept as pets by many in the Xerea Empire. This was as much because of their easy maintenance as their adorable appearance, however their short lifespan often meant that the pets of children were replaced by doting parents.

Of the birds of prey, one of the most commonly witnessed in the area is the iiral drakl. This small bird is recognised by its smoky grey-black plumage and burgundy neck/chest markings. Like all falcons it has a short crooked beak and long sharp talons. Making their nests in the taller of the shrubs and bushes in the Ennytai region, this falcon often is seen hunting at dusk for any of the small animals that call the area home. Their most common prey are the different breeds of rodents that are easy for the small bird to scoop up and carry back to their nest.

While most often found in the wild, this particular variety of falcon has been domesticated for use by the different nomadic bands that have populated the region. Most notably the iiral drakl has become synonymous with the Avaya kin’toni clan to the point where it is now their unofficial symbol to outsiders.
