Ir’ser Autumn Taiga is a region located in the north of the Taerel Continent. Ir’ser is a cold land covered in hardy conifers and snow-capped mountains. The region is not known for its hospitality and is seldom visited by kin’toni and is almost never visited by zu’aan. Ir’ser does not contain many valuable resources which is why no other major kin’toni clans attempted to lay a claim to the area. Instead a small clan of all female kin’toni settled down here in seclusion. The Ormad Kin'toni Clan settled down into the region several years after the original outbreak.
Their leader at the time, Fara, wanted to create a new society away from the prying eyes of the more powerful clans. The Ormad learned to use the terrain of Ir’ser to their advantage. They could hunt animals and zu’aan in the vast woods that cover the land at this time, and they became very proficient at it. They learnt new ways to hide amongst the trees and snow, and eventually they became almost completely unknown to the nearby regions. They adopted mask wearing so that it was harder to identify their clan’s unique facial features, and thus discover their existence.
The Ormad kin’toni clan increased its number steadily over the ages, and eventually needed a home base to train the newer members of the clan. Taikodo Sanctuary was erected several decades into the clan’s existence. The clan was always recruiting new female zu’aan into their ranks, and the priority were girls who had suffered some form of trauma. Many of these new recruits were scarred and terrified of the other kin’toni. The Ormad elected that they needed a safe haven to train them up and allow them to heal their wounds, both mental and physical.
Taikodo is located in the centre of the Namian Marsh, a section of icy marshes stretching between the two major mountain ranges in the region. Before its construction, the clan mostly slept in small tents or in nothing at all. Now they clan rest inside large, camouflaged tents made from sticks, animal coats and mud. They use the mud and leaves, as well as the natural snowfall to camouflage their base, if there was someone stupid enough to enter the marsh. Taikodo is formed from thirty main tents erected in a circular fashion around the central tent.
The central tent is where the clan stores their food and other resources. The Ormad kin’toni clan has had to engage in several wars over the years. Most of these are against kin’toni clans who are violating women in their clan, or those who sought to take land in Ir’ser. The only war that actually took place within the borders of Ir’ser Autumn Taiga was against a now extinct Jamalan kin’toni clan. The Jamalan discovered the location of Taikodo but were unaware the stealthy Ormad spies knew they had this information. Their attack met an ambush in the marsh and the entirety of their force met a muddy grave.
Geography
Ir’ser Autumn Taiga is stuck in an eternal autumn climate. This is how the region earnt its name. Ir’ser is often cloudy and rain is very common, snows occasionally happen during the wintertime as well. The snows usually don’t affect the taiga forest itself, as they mostly fall on the tops of the two mountain ranges that can be found in Ir’ser. These two mountain ranges are the Everfrost and Coldheart ranges. The Everfrost range is the larger of the two and is located in the south of the region. Everfrost was named so because the ground in these mountains is almost always covered in ice and frost. These mountains are treacherous to scale, and hard to navigate.
The tallest peak in the Everfrost Range is Mount Tamanaki, this mountain has only ever been reached by one kin’toni from the local Ormad clan. This was a famous explorer named Tasha, she documented the creatures and plants she discovered in the range, as well as estimated the size of it. She named Mount Tamanaki after her father from when she was a zu’aan. The Coldheart mountain range is mostly undiscovered and has yet to be properly explored. The mountains here are taller than the ones in Everfrost, but there are less of them. Each of the peaks here are fully frozen over as they reach so high into the air.
The looming peaks cast deep shadows over the rest of the range as well as the non-mountainous areas nearby. This mountain range is rumoured to contain many ancient evils, and every explorer who ever dared to venture into Coldheart never returned. Even the great Tasha never returned from her expedition into the region. Thus, the details of what is contained within these frozen mountains is mostly unknown, and often speculated about by the local Ormad kin’toni clan.
In-between the two massive mountain ranges lies the icy expanse that is the Namian Marsh. The Namian Marsh is a series of muddy bogs and frozen ponds ally lying beneath a layer of age-old conifers. This part of Ir’ser is very difficult to travel through if you don’t know where you are going. Solid ground is rare in the marsh, as the land here is either soft or ice. In the centre of the Namian Marsh lies the local Ormad kin’toni clan’s hidden base. Taikodo Sanctuary is located on a series of small solid islands within the marsh that can be reached through certain concealed pathways across the bogs.
On these islands they have their camouflaged tents in which they live and raise new clan members in. The Namian Marsh is fed water from the massive river known to the local Ormad kin’toni clan as the river Fara. Fara River originates from another region further north than Ir’ser, and pumps fresh water into the region. Its water is one of the main reasons why the conifer forests in the region have flourished. It comes through the ColdHeart mountain range and ends at the northern side of the Namian Marsh where its water seeps into the swamp.
Plants
Plant life in Ir’ser Autumn Taiga is very restricted by the cooler climate. Only the hardier plants can survive for any reasonable period of time here. The water in the region is concentrated around the Namian Marsh and the Fara River that leads to it. Water can also be gained from the near constant rain in the region. Sunlight, however, is more difficult to come by with the constant cloudy skies.
Ir’ser Conifers
Ir’ser conifers are the most common tree in the region. These plants are native and unique to Ir’ser Autumn Taiga and are the reason Ir’ser is referred to as a Taiga biome. These trees are very hardy and can resist the cold with their thick bark. These trees can grow to heights of up to thirty metres and tower over everything else in the region. Their bark is thick and black coloured on the trunk, the branches are coloured brown instead. They don’t have leaves and instead have long but thin needles which are colour a dark shade of green.
These trees grow almost everywhere in Ir’ser except for the Coldheart mountain range. The constant rain in the region keeps them growing steadily and the frosty soil does not affect them. Their wood is very study and great for construction. The local Ormad kin’toni clan has used Ir’ser conifer wood to make the frames for their tents.
Lolare
Lolare are a species of small bush that are native and unique to Ir’ser Autumn Taiga. These bushes grow in the undergrowth beneath the towering Ir’ser conifers. Their leaves remain brown all year round, adding to the idea that the Ir’ser region is in a permanent state of autumn. They are very common throughout the region due to their rapid seed spreading and natural hardiness. Their branches grow from a central core. These branches are light brown and generally very thin. The branches snap easily but are able to flex with the wind to avoid the bushes being blown away.
Lolare spread their seeds when their core releases floating tufts of brown fluff into the air. The plants usually do this when the branches are being blown by a strong wind, and the plant can sense it. This wind will carry the seedlings to new grounds where they can grow and flourish.
Gamo Trees
Gamo Trees are a species of fruit tree that are native and unique to Ir’ser Autumn Taiga. These trees are most commonly found in the Namian Marsh. They are shorter than the far larger Ir’ser conifers that surround them but are able to survive without much sunlight. Gamo trees grow to heights of ten to twenty metres tall. Their leaves are orange which makes them stand out from their far blander surroundings. They grow small white fruits all year round, which are called ‘snow fruit’ by the local Ormad kin’toni clan.
These fruits are not useful to the kin’toni but they can be traded for equipment or resources the clan needs. Gamo Trees have also been seen growing on the slopes of the Coldheart and Everfrost mountain ranges.
Animals
Wildlife in Ir’ser Autumn Taiga is generally dangerous. The creatures that live in this region are not friendly toward outsiders, or frankly anyone. The local Ormad kin’toni have learnt to use stealth to remain unseen from the many dangerous animals that prowl between the conifers. There are also rumours of an ancient evil that lurks beyond the shadowy border into Coldheart.
Swilasos
Swilasos are a species of aquatic amphibian that live beneath the murk of the Namian Marsh. These peculiar creatures have bodies shaped like oversized worms, the only difference being that they have four small flippers. Their long thin bodies allow them to move through thick mud as well as small gaps between ponds. They can also walk on land for a few minutes. swilasos are dark green or sometimes brown. They have wide jaws lined with three layers of sharp teeth. When fully extended a swilaso mouth can engulf a kin’toni arm or leg.
These creatures usually grow to lengths of around one metre. They earnt their name through their hunting technique. They sit their heads on the surface of the marsh and when they spot prey, they swim to it and bit from beneath. Local kin’toni wading through the swamp and are common source of prey for them, although a swilaso can rarely kill a kin’toni they can cause serious injury.
Farmala
Farmala are a species of predatory wolf that are native and unique to Ir’ser Autumn Taiga. These creatures are muscular and strong. Their powerful legs can carry them at very high speeds through treacherous terrain. They usually live in the mountains during the day and come out to hunt during the night. Their howls are often heard breaking the silence of the cold nights in Ir’ser. These wolves have grey fur and a signature black line that runs across the top of their heads. Their eyes are all black to help them see better at night. Their keen sense of smell allows them to track their prey for miles. Often the stalk their prey for an entire night.
The local Ormad kin’toni clan settled in the Namian Marsh because the stench of the swamp covers their scent. This means that their sanctuary is mostly safe from the Farmala packs.
Vorthai
Vorthai are a species of ancient predators that have lived in Ir’ser for centuries, hidden away from society by the walls of the Coldheart mountain range. Vorthai are still unknown to the local Ormad kin’toni although some explorers have encountered them several times. None of these explorers ever returned to their homelands. Vorthai are tall, furry creatures that have four white legs that protrude from their centre of their backs. They walk using these legs and angle their long bodies forward headfirst. This gives them the appearance of giant white spiders with four legs.
However, their bodies do not resemble insects at all. Their legs are hard and hairless, made from bone whereas their bodies are covered in thick white fur. They have large heads with mouths full of razor-sharp teeth. They kill any kin’toni who they catch venturing into their domain, as they want to prevent them from discovering the secret that lies within the Coldheart mountain range. The name the local kin’toni gave these mountains is actually more intuitive than they realised.
