Geography
The Chacnys Sullen Grove is a vast, primordial woodland that has settled into the depths of a mist-laden, permanently overcast basin in the deep interior of the temperate, Twilight Age world. The Sullen Grove is the polar opposite of the scorched plains of Chacer or the roaring, fiery autumns of Baed, possessing an oppressive, lethargic atmosphere. Shrouded for millennia by heavy fog, it is a landscape almost entirely lacking any true daylight, where the changing seasons themselves seem to lumber along with agonizing slowness.
Topography and Geology
Geographically the grove occupies a enormous, shallow basin surrounded by deeply eroded ancient highlands. The highlands act as a sort of elevated wall, completely damming cool, humid air into the lowlands. The terrain may appear remarkably uniform from the above canopy but underneath is a nightmarish topography of sunken holes, ravines and gullies choked with moss. It's bedrock is a mixture of old sedimentary rock (Sandstone and Limestone) and occasional granite deposits.
It is however buried under a few metres of dark humus-rich earth and centuries of constant, damp decomposition-which have turned it into a moisture-holding sponge. Tree roots and the forest floor have become dangerous sink holes filled with leaf litter and slippery, rotting wood.
Climate and Hydrography
Hydrologically Chacnys is dominated by slow moving, deep-shaded streams andartesian springs that feed numerous stagnant wetlands. The thick canopy prevents the land from drying out or the air becoming anything more than hyper-humid. The grove truly exists as one gigantic, moist terrarium. There are no major storms in the region as there are in Chacer or Baed; instead it has one climate and only one: eternally damp drizzle, perpetually held in place by the unmoving air. The cold moisture radiation that sits in the valleys is a killer: fog that stays, for days on end. This constant, moist dead-stillness has been known to drive visitors mad.
Traversability
Chacnys has nothing to match the lethally swift flash floods of Belth or the colossal tides of Busor, yet navigating the Sullen Grove can be as brutal as any geographical obstacle. The canopy is so thick it completely blocks out the sun-rendering celestial navigation impossible, while ground-level visibility is restricted to less than 50 metres thanks to the fog. Adding to this problem is the wildly uneven ground, covered with vast root-networks that crisscross underfoot and hidden sink-holes to trap unaware wanderers. Without knowing how to navigate using only the water, travelers may be completely lost and without hope of escape.
Plants
Canopy Flora (Climax Broadleafs and Suspended Necromass)
The flora of Chacnys Sullen Grove is a study in slow and relentless ecological succession, entirely driven by endless shade and hyper-abundance of water. In contrast to Chacer's sunny prairie environment or Baed's explosive seasonal changes, the flora of Chacnys exist in a state of perpetual twilight, dominated by ancient climax community broadleaf titans, their intertwined canopies forming a brutally thick, nearly unbroken biological roof over the forest. Anchored in deeply waterlogged soil, these behemoths maximize their intake of whatever meager solar energy the forest allows, plunging the forest floor into an everlasting twilight.
The hyper-humid atmosphere forms the canopy into an extremely complex, layered biological community, laden with epiphytes, mosses and lichens hanging like green curtains. As nearly no wind penetrates the basin, massive dead branches linger in the canopy for decades, slowly decomposing at the hands of arboreal fungi which incorporate the dead wood back into the living structure above.
Understory Flora (Sciophytes and Mycorrhizal Networks)
Below the crushing weight of the canopy lies the light-starved understory, a land governed by thesciophytes(plants that thrive in the shade). With solar energy so rare, its flora have maximized macrophyllous growth, with uniquely enormous, broad leaves designed to intercept the slightest amount of stray photon energy. Growth is agonizingly slow here; plants compete not with speed, but with endurance that lasts for centuries. These are ultimately out-competed for "ownership" of the twilight by fungi.
An enormously dense, untouched accumulation of rotten leaf litter and fallen logs produces an incomprehensibly massive network ofsaprophytic(eating decaying matter) andmycorrhizal(sharing nutrients with plant roots) fungi. Colossal mushroom fruiting bodies often rise from moss-covered logs, and the underground network literally fuses the roots of the massive canopy titans with even the youngest understory ferns, effectively allowing for artificial sustained growth in the nutrient-poor environment.
Wetland Flora (Palustrine Corridors and Peat Hollows)
The slow artesian springs, sluggish blackwater streams and submerged hollows allow for localised palustrine(wetland) microhabitats within Chacnys Sullen Grove. Even in already overly humid territory, these boggy hollows explode with dense green growth. Shade-loving ferns, sharp edged sedges, and sphagnum moss are intensely packed into the stream corridors, binding their muddy banks tightly and restricting the flow of water to a mere trickle. The most submerged and permanently wet hollows slowly become over-ridden with dead aquatic flora which gradually compress, creating enormous peat beds that stretch deeper than the visible forest floor.
Fallen trees, especially massive ones, will completely span the bogs, disappearing entirely beneath several inches of slowly spreading liverwort and moss until they resemble little more than an overgrown bog with moss covered trees, creating some of the most hyper-productive and wet areas of Chacnys.
Seasonal Adaptations (Deep-Time Ecology and Gap-Phase Dynamics)
The flora and fauna of Chacnys have entirely discarded rapid growth in favor of the slow, steady burn of deep-time ecology and hyper-efficient nutrient recycling. Unlike the constantly changing, drought-or wildfire-ravaged systems in Chacer or Baed, Chacnys changes over timescales of centuries, not days or months. The humid, dense canopy completely blocks seasonal changes, and while metabolic rates may decrease during the cold winter months, the heavily insulative climate of the enclosed grove rarely allows for a total dormant state.
Any change in the ecosystem is entirely dictated by extremely localised gap-phase dynamics, wherein a centennial canopy titan succumbs to rot and tears a light-gap in the canopy. This momentary infusion of light initiates a desperate, violent surge of secondary growth in the understory seeds below, with local competition to reach the now open light, a competition which ends with the gap inevitably closed by the creeping ancient canopy once again.
Animals
Woodland Fauna (Shadow-Dwelling and Ambush Species)
The animals of Chacnys Sullen Grove are incredibly secretive and sensually specialized. While Chacer moves with wild, sweeping migrations and Ban'oughi navigates through thriving aquatic highways, the fauna of Chacnys evolved in an oppressive, perpetual twilight. With vision limited to a few dozen yards by the heavy canopy and thick radiation fog, surviving these woods requires an enhanced sense of mechanoreception (vibrations), acute hearing, and developed chemosensory (scent) organs.
As there is a perfectly uniform distribution of biomass and eerily constant climate, there are no broad migrations to be found. Instead, both herbivores and omnivores have fixed, small home ranges. Predation in the darkness relies entirely on utter silence; apex predators are strictly ambush-hunting species, possessing an extreme visual crypsis (camouflage) to match their mottled coat perfectly with damp bark, rotten logs, and thick mosses to remain entirely unseen within the gloom until their prey is within striking distance.
Canopy Fauna (Arboreal and Cavity-Nesting Specialists)
A suspended, three dimensional ecosystem exists in the interlocking, enormous crowns of the grove. This heavy canopy provides a thriving niche for obligate arboreal species which may never touch the damp ground for their entire lives. With navigation through misty, dew-slicked branches requiring unique features such as prehensile appendages, climbing claws on each limb, and hyper-flexible joints; smaller omnivores and insectivores may safely build necromass-nests within the cavities of standing deadwood to avoid predation.
This distinct food web is sustained by thick mosses, fruiting epiphytes and abundant insects native to the high up community.
Forest Floor Fauna (Fossorial and Detritivore Guilds)
If the canopy is the arena for the agile, the dark ground is the absolute lifeblood of the grove. Buried under thick layers of decomposing leaves and large, rotten logs (coarse woody debris); enormous communities of fossorial (burrowing) mammals and detritivores reside. These cryptic species digest the tons of organic material raining down on them each year and can also be found feeding directly on the massive fungal colonies growing deep within the soil as a form of non-photosynthesizing organism that still makes up the cornerstone of this unusual terrestrial food web.
Wetland and Stream Fauna (Riparian and Benthic Species)
Stagnant, blackwater streams, bubbling artesian springs, and sodden peat bogs provide extremely concentrated habitats for amphibious and aquatic life. With no brutal, open plains droughts nor violent flash floods from Belth to worry about, these riparian zones exist as very stable environments throughout the year. Here thriving communities of amphibious grazers, shelled crustaceans, and benthic (bottom-feeding) filter-feeders abound. Animal life congregates at these resources and so the stream banks act as perfect ambushing grounds for the largest terrestrial predators that the woods can sustain; utilizing ferns and the frequent low-lying fog to conceal themselves from unsuspecting prey.
Behavioral Cycles (Acoustic Communication and Gap-Phase Dynamics)
Behavioral patterns are surprisingly subdued in Chacnys Sullen Grove. The suffocating canopy keeps diurnal activity to a bare minimum, with most of the fauna being exclusively nocturnal and crepuscular (active at dusk and dawn). Lacking the opportunity to signal via vision, mating rituals and territorial disputes occur entirely through low-frequency sound and strong scent-marking. The only significant pulses of activity are centered around a highly localized gap-phase dynamic.
If a massive, ancient tree succumbs to rot and falls to the forest floor, the resultant breach in the canopy creates a flash of light that triggers a frantic growth explosion. This short bloom brings an influx of herbivores and their respective opportunistic predators to "light gap", where hyper-active micro-ecosystems dominate for a few short years until the ancient canopy seals shut again.
