Geography

The Xaness overgrown cliff region was known for its cliffs and canyons that occurred all over the area and gave it its distinctive name. These features were a result of thousands of years of seismic activity that had caused rifts to develop in the landmass and eventually grow wider and form cliff faces. It was also bordered by the sea on its western coasts where the landmass ended in a sudden dropoff into the waters. This formed its natural sea wall that was constantly pummeled by the raging waves and strong winds coming in from the sea.

This lead to the formation of many weird shapes and rock features that stood isolated from the main landmass of the coast. The scraggy landscape of the region was overgrown with all sorts of shrubs, short plants and trees that grew in every exposed bit of land in the Xaness region. The soil of the region was not known for its fertility and was particularly rocky in most parts. Aside from these conditions, the vegetation had to adapt to the cold and windy conditions of the entire region.

This meant deep and strong roots as well as the resilience to survive in the low light conditions of the region. Useful vegetation was very sparse and the people had to resort to hunting or fight over more land to make up for the lack of resources. The region was populated by very hardy people who fought a lot of wars and were in constant disagreements with each other over land, resources and many other matters. These wars would leave behind their own mark on the land in the form of decomposing dead bodies and weapons that the scavenging birds would come to feed off and peck to the last bone.

The Xaness experienced cold and damp conditions mostly because of the influence of the sea that surrounded it on one side. Rainfall and storms were common in the region and would occur throughout the year. The region experienced two kinds of seasons- summer and winter. In summers, the temperature would hang around the mid to low twenties while experiencing rainfall and regular storms that would bring in heavy winds from the coast and into the region. This would often lead to a weird phenomenon where small aquatic animals that had been sucked up by these storms over the sea would be deposited on land, along with the rainfall.

In winters, the temperatures would wander into single digits- leading to the formation of frost over the ground during the early hours of the morning, along with the occasional sleet that could destroy plants and crops that were not resilient enough for the weather. The region experienced a lack of sunlight throughout the year, which was particularly worse during this season. The sky would appear as dawn at all times and the sun would rarely make an appearance due to the overcast conditions.

Plants

The plants of the Xaness region had to be able to survive many of the harsh conditions of the region including the constant winds, sleet and frost and the inadequate daylight experienced by the region. Most of the plants and vegetation that grew in the region had adapted to survive in the region for many years and would actively overrun any vegetation that were not adapted to survive in the region. These plants would compete for the soil and would spread their roots over the largest surface area to anchor themselves into the ground.

Some of the most prominent vegetation of the region included the ortur trees that were known for their short and stubby appearance, the rahol shrubs that grew in the rocky soil alongside their distant cousins, the dyaswar and the kilald trees that grew in the rocky surfaces of the cliff faces. The ortur was one of the few trees that grew in the Xaness region. They could grow only up to a maximum height of over ten feet and had a short and stubble stem that would bend along with the winds without breaking.

Their stem was harvested for the creation of many tools and weapons and was particularly valued among the native tribesmen of the region. The ortur had a distinctive dark green color that had a blueish tint due to the lack of sunlight in the region. These leaves were thin and small and would fall off during the colder winter months. They were firmly planted into the ground with the help of their long roots that could encompass a wide area to embed themselves firmly into the ground.

The rahol and the dyaswar were two kinds of shrubs that grew in plenty along the floors of the Xaness region. They were both invasive species of shrubs that had taken over the surface of the Xaness region. Their only difference lay in their distinct colors- the rahol was colored a dark shade of brown while the dyaswar was a faint yellow in color. They both required very little sunlight and could withstand frost as well as the strong winds that regularly blew across the region.

They had very limited utility to the zu'aan of the region because they were mostly inedible and had very little nutritional value. They served as fodder for the few animals that lived in the region. This variety of shrub was very versatile and there were aquatic variations that lived along the sea bordering cliffs of the region and even underwater as sea weed. The kilald were a very specific kind of tree that grew only along the cliff faces in the region. They were known to be very hardy and openly visible roots that clung to the rocky surface of the cliffs.

They could be distinguished from their very visible green leaves against the white rock faces of the Xaness cliffs. They leaves were known to be fleshy with high water content and were regularly consumed by various species of rock-climbing mammals that lived in the region.

Animals

The Xaness region was home to a few specially adapted wildlife that could endure the tough conditions of the region. These animals had to be able to endure the cold, the windy and rainy conditions as well as the general lack of vegetation and food in the surface of the region. There was heavy competition for the resources available in the surface and most of the wildlife were known to be very territorial as a result. Some of the most recognizable animals of the region included the shycmos - a plant eating species of cattle.

The usthin - a predatory species, the Eneld- a rock climbing animal that fed on the nutritious plants that grew along the cliff faces of the region and the enthlye- a predatory bird that preyed on the young ones of the animals in the region. The shycmos was one of the most commonly observable wildlife in the region. They would travel together in large groups for protection and would regularly engage in pitch battles with other rival groups over territory. They could grow to over ten feet in length when fully grown and weigh in at an enormous four hundred pounds of muscle, fat and bone.

They were equipped with reinforced skulls and horns that they used to attack other groups of their own species when they fought for domination of territories. Hunting these creatures was dangerous activity and the zu'aan had to be careful to separate them into smaller groups or individuals before carrying out any aggressive activity. With their massive mass and sharp horns, they were more than capable of seriously wounding and even killing fully grown zu'aan. The shycmos was strictly vegetarian and lived off the shrubs and tree leaves of the region.

The usthin was a predatory animal that was feline in its appearance and could grow to over six feet in length and stood over four feet off the ground. It had very heavy-set bones and muscles that allowed it to generate enough force in its limbs to open up wounds on its prey. They were equipped with long claws as well as a strong jaw that had sharp serrated teeth that it used to tear into the flesh of its prey. The usthin was quite elusive and never approached areas of zu'aan habitation and concentrated populations.

This made them a prized target among many of the zu'aan hunters who hunted them for their waterproofed coats of fur. The eneld was a species of wild cattle that grazed all over the Xaness cliffs. They were light and agile and were especially renowned for their ability to climb cliff faces. These animals fed on the fleshy leaves of the plants that grew along the sides of these rocky cliffs. The eneld were a common dietary source for many of the zu'aan clans in the region who would even domesticate these calm and non-violent animals.

They provided milk as well as valuable hide- for use in the creation of their cloaks and clothes. The enthlye was a predatory bird that made its nest in the upper reaches of many cliff faces where they were safely out of reach of many predators and small scavengers that preyed on the eggs of these birds. The enthlye had sharp and long talons that allowed them to grab all kinds of small prey and carry them off to their nests. Their regularly preyed on the zu'aan's farm animals and were considered as a nuisance for the same reason.

Most zu'aan hunted them on sight even though their meat was considered to be too tough and their feathers were of no particular use to them.
