Geography
The core Xalia Fungal Field itself is relatively uniform except for the fields of different types of fungi. The ground is undulated and there are cave and catacomb systems below, originally excavated by a long dead zu’aan civilization known only as the R’mak. To the north of the Xalia Fungal Field is a large expanse of trees and forests where the mighty, and mysterious, biribiri trees live. It is home to many animals and plants who have adapted to live in this environment, most of which are completely unrelated to anything else found in the rest of the continent.
They also glow faintly blue at their peak, hence the name "Biribiri" or "shining" in the language of the natives. There are many different types of biribiri trees, with sizes ranging from that of a small tree to larger than even the great redwoods of the far east. The most common type is about as big as an oak tree, though certain types can reach up to forty or fifty feet. As for their behavior, all biribiri are hermaphroditic and release spores into the air to spread their seeds. To the west of the Xalia Fungal Field is the island chain of the West Isles.
It is made up of about two dozen large islands and several small ones. The largest island is home to the only town on the islands, which mainly serves as a trading outpost to merchants from across the ocean. The West Islanders are a boisterous people who value adventure and discovery. Most of them are well-tanned from spending so much time out in the sun, but a few take to staying in the shade. To the east of the Xalia Fungal Field is the Nahrun Wasteland, an expanse of desert and rocky badlands. It is a harsh and unforgiving land, but some creatures have managed to thrive in this environment.
The wasteland is home to many cryptosus, massive crawling creatures that dwell beneath the sands. The average cryptosus is about half the size of a biribiri, though some reach up to sixty or eighty centimeters tall. Cryptosus are generally solitary creatures, only coming together to mate. In the southeast of the Xalia Fungal Field is the dead forest. What was once a beautiful wilderness is now a dead land of black and grey. Nearly no living creature calls this place home, as it is slowly rotting away into oblivion. The entire forest is made up of different types of wood and plant life that have died and rotted away.
Though no normal animal or plant will enter the place. Even the spores that make up the biribiri fungi avoid the area. In the center of the dead forest lies a massive underground cave, which seems to be hollowed out by some unknown force. This is the domain of the Glip, a race of one-eyed beings who are as tough as they come. The Glip are a mysterious, probably sub-sentient animal race that relies on fishing for their survival. They do not allow any outsiders into their land, and will ruthlessly attack if provoked. However, no one really knows what they look like, as they have never been seen by any living outsider.
In the southwest of the Xalia Fungal Field is a series of islands that are covered in dense jungle. A tribe of reclusive zu’aan makes their home here, the Island Claws. These zu’aan are all known to be skilled sailors and have built boats with which they travel to the West Island to trade. The Island Claws have fought many wars with the Island Spearmen of the West Island, though mostly for honor rather than any serious gain. The Island Claws worship an entity known as Greed, and have done so for many generations.
Plants
There are relatively few plants in the Xalia Fungal Field, so to speak. Most of it is covered by fungi and lichen, which aren’t technically vegetables. There are also unicellular photosynthetic symbionts within their structures, which allows the fungi to feed from the solar radiation indirectly.
- The biribiri fungi are a species of Mycelium with a relatively short life span. They are only interested in spreading their colonies as wide as possible, and then they die. The death of a biribiri fungi is a two-part process. First, the mycelium dies. Then the individual cells within the mycelium die. biribiri fungi are capable of fusing with other individual cells to create new, unique mycelium. It is through this process that new races are born. They go in the color range from bright green to blue, and are bioluminescent during spring.
- Poisonous biribiri fungi are not particularly dangerous unless you get too close to them. If you do, they will quickly kill you by releasing spores into your body which cause the victim's skin and organs to rot away until nothing remains except a skeleton. You may still survive if you manage to escape before the spores reach your system.
- Tankerus fungi are a secondary reproductive vector of the biribiri fungi. They take the form of a large multicellular organism that can travel around in order to find biribiri fungi to fuse with. They cannot survive on their own, and will die if they cannot find a host. There have only been a few tankerus fungi recorded in history. The colour of this species is a dark brown with green spots. They are relatively small compared to other members of the genus, with a legspan of only about three feet. They are unrelated to the biribiri fungi, but still live within their forests. They feed on fruits from the trees and are completely harmless to humans. They are generally peaceful, but if one finds itself under attack it releases a fine dust that causes hallucinations in the aggressor.
- Xilimani fungi are one of the most common types of mobile fungi in the field, but they aren't normally seen frequently due to their tendency to hide. They are a relatively small organism that prefers to stay underground where it is dark and safe. Xilimani are scavengers, and will eat whatever they can find laying around, including dead bodies. They are extremely resilient, and it is nearly impossible to kill them with any kind of weapon.
- Tillimani green lichens are a secondary reproductive vector of the Xilimani fungi. While they do not move, like the xilimani, they are still a single organism made up of many smaller organisms. To reproduce, a tgilimani will send out spores which are then consumed by xilimani fungi.
- Silendar Moss is a type of moss that grows in the field. It is not known exactly where they came from, but it is known that they have been in the fields since before the Biribiri fungi arrived. It is believed that the fields were at one time entirely made up of this moss, which is very hearty, but not aggressive. Silendar moss reproduces in a manner much like mushrooms. It releases spores which act as seeds which then grow into more moss. The moss itself is very hardy and does not die unless exposed to extreme temperatures or dried out. It is green with brown spots, but due to the sheer amount of it in the forests outside the fungal field, it tends to blend in there a lot better than the Biribiri fungi.
Fungi of the field are sought after for their strong taste, culinary properties, and decorative value.
Animals
Animals in the Xalia Fungal Field have had to adapt to the high cover of mushrooms, along with the great amount of toxins in the ambient. Rodents and reptilians (sometimes both) are the main animals within the Xalia Fungal Field, with others being birds, though typically flightless (as the field is quite flat and treeless, there is no great advantage in flying).
- Saal-arrkahs are a race of small, limbless, four-legged creatures with a long snout, small rabbit-like ears, and pupil-less yellow eyes. They rank high among the Xalia Fungal Field charts, as they are one of the most intelligent races within the field.
- Naal-arrkah are a relatively new species, having evolved from normal saal-arrkahs about fifty years ago. Since their evolution, the new species has developed a mutualistic relationship with the trimera toxic mushroom Fungus (an unusually powerful type of fungus that grew under their scales) which grants them with an unusually high level of intelligence, while also making them more vulnerable to the effects of the same fungus. They are an industrious but also a bit lazy species, that alternate periods of high activity with intense slacking.
- Saal-vorr: These small mammals resemble a cross between vorr and saal-arrkah, being both rodents and reptiles. They are skilled hunters and excellent chefs, often dining on their conquest's flesh. They are also believed in folk tales to be excellent midwifes, often assisting other beings in giving birth to their offspring. They have a spiritualized sense of balance and harmony, being considered both physically attractive and an excellent dancer when trained as pets.
- The ashu'baath is a small, furry creature with a rat torso attached to a mouse-like head. The species is known to eat anything that moves, and is infamous for its propensity to cannibalize its own species. Despite this, the ashu'baath is a generally peaceful and well-meaning race. They are good for cooking according to chefs, though their Mouse Tail is a bit on the soft side.
- The pentamos is a unique breed of fowl that is native to the Xalia Fungal Field. They have a special ability to infect other living creatures with their disease producing flail. This ability makes them a valuable ally to have, but also makes them a formidable enemy. It is a small, flightless bird. It is covered in a thick coat of white feathers that have a blue tinge. The pentamos bird is very friendly and social within its own species. They form strong family bonds and are very loyal to their friends and family. When a pentamos bird grows up, they leave their family to find a mate. They only mate for life, and will search for years to find their soulmate. When a pentamos bird finds a mate, they will build the most beautiful nest they can find. The nest is meant to symbolize their everlasting love. Afterwards, they will build a family of their own.
- The koropas is a small, flightless bird that lives within the confines of the Xalia Fungal Field. They are a peaceful, nature-loving race who primarily hunt Fungi using their beaks to pull them from the ground. They are a simple, quiet animal who typically live in small, peaceful communities. The koropas is considered a sacred species within the Laika Kin'toni Clan.
- The tivian wurm is a large wurm that lives in the Xila Forest. They are an omnivorous race who mainly eat plants. They are extremely well-adapted, as they were able to create an entire symbiosis out of the fungus that grew on their bodies. However, due to their omnivorous diet, they have been known to sometimes develop a taste for meat, especially zu’aan flesh.
