Geography

The Uskine Intertidal Wetland is a completely walled region that is open only to sea, it forms the southernmost tip of the Nara Kingdom, and was chosen by the king personally due to his connection with the city. It is known that the Nara King lived in the city when he was a zu'aan. However, his exact origins are unknown to most kin'toni, and those that do know about the details of his private life prefer not to discuss the matter freely, for the King trusted the secret only to his most trusted circle.

The King was in fact a guard to the provincial overlord that ruled the province in the name of the monarch of the Xerea Empire, and had once dreamed of being its ruler, when the conversion happened, the King campaigned furiously and fought many wars to staple together a kingdom that has now come to stand among the to be one of the most powerful on the whole Canlai landmass. The Intertidal wetland was chosen for its pristine natural beauty, the city is jewelled with small bodies of water that glow a thousand shades of colour as the setting suns light falls on themm

Most of the city’s important habitations are built in these little lakes, forming floating palaces. Among the most beautiful of the palaces built in the city is that of the King, accessible only through boat, it is a truly breathtaking monument. Since taking over the palace from its previous occupants, the Car royal line has done much to add to the luxury and grandness of the Palace. In the waning light of the sun, the palace comes to life as kin'toni servants light the many lanterns that dazzle any spectator.

The palace forms a spectacular reflection in the quiet waters of the lake within which it is built. Those who have set their eyes on the lit palace at night, are perhaps the only ones to understand the capacity of the kin'toni to craft wonders. The gentle weather of the place is a blessing that many of the caretakers that are responsible for maintaining the property have come to appreciate. It rains in the wetland nearly every week, the torrent of rain that rocks the little walled region every week is incredibly forceful but extremely short-lived.

For it rains here for barely more than an hour or so. The forceful and recent rainfall washes clean the sparkling white marble facades of the numerous palaces keeping them spotless throughout the year. There is little influence of nature within the walls of the Emperor’s city, and it is said that god must himself must seek the permission of the groundskeeper of the wetland in order to allow a flower to blossom. This is certainly true for although there are trees, plants, and animals in the wetland.

They are closely guided and maintained, so although nature exists within the walls, but since it doesn’t grow of its own volition it seems more artificial than natural. The kin'toni of many other nations, that have been somehow invited to the city, have public criticised the Nara monarchy for the manner in which animals and plants are treated here, terming it characteristically un-kin'toni like.

Plants

As stated above, the animals and plants of the region are closely observed, and managed to the smallest degree in order to ensure that nothing within the wetlands grows in a way that would displease either the king or the royal clan. Most of the species that are cultivated here are brought from far away places and doctored by attendants that have spent their whole lives studying the lives of plants and animals. Over the long years of cultivation, one particular plant has become a favourite of the royal clan, as such it can be seen to be cultivated in several parts of the city across the whole wetland.

It is called the tayla tree, drawing its name from the species of plant that it was sourced from in the Iturn Dead Swamp. The tayla tree was actually discovered through an accident by an attendant that had been lax in the administration of one of the plants that had been placed under his charge. The tayla tree is a minuscule tree that although tiny represents the perfect model of the tree that it has been sourced from, the full grown tayla-Lal tree grows in the Iturn Dead Swamp, and when it is fully developed, it only has leaves on its topmost branches.

Sensitive to the touch, the long and spindly leaves of the tree are able to retract and compress into little pods that are found where the branches of the tree meet its trunk. The tayla tree of the Uskine Intertidal wetland is a perfect miniature model of the larger tree that is found in the rainforest. Initially a specimen from the the swamps was brought to the Intertidal wetland, as the King on a visit had taken a liking to it when he had visited the Swamp cities in the Ashat Kingdom for a diplomatic mission.

Upon his return he ordered the trees to be grown in his own home, but the Intertidal wetland although not a barren land is nowhere near as fertile as the soil of the Iturn dead swamp. So when the attendants were ordered to grow the tayla-lal trees in the wetland, they prepared a piece of land especially for the trees, and spent several days prior to the planting by adding manure and other biotic substances into the soil and kept turning it. It was their hope that they could in doing so add some of the nutrients to the soil that were essential for the growth of the tree.

And they were successful for the most part, and they began to multiply the few trees that had begun to grow in the wetland, but one of the attendants that had been assigned the duty of managing the trees grew lazy and consistently forgot to water one of the saplings that been given under his care, as such the tayla-lal tree so although the tree in question had all the nutrients it required to carry out all its metabolic processes but did not have enough water to produce the food it needed to grow, in these unique circumstances the plant grew all its components but did so in tiny proportions.

The King during one of his strolls discovered the Tayla Tree and was amazed by it, and demanded the Tayla tree to decorate his personal bed chamber, since then the attendants have produced several Tayla trees that jewel the whole palace.

Animals

Like the plants that grow within the walls of Uskine, the animals too have been carefully cultivated in order to ensure the pleasure of the king. The animal species that originally lived within the Uskine Intertidal Wetland were exterminated by the governor that had preciously been in possession of the city, however, since the King of Nara has taken over the city, there have been introductions of several animal species that the King has admired and wishes to be surrounded with.

Given that the King shares the love of nature that most kin'toni are characterised with, he has ensured that the animals that are kept within the walls are well cared for and are given enough freedom to live according to their natural habits. Among the animals that are most abundantly found within the intertidal wetland, the greatest amount are found from within the forests of the Iturn Dead Swamp, particularly the colourful flying lizards, and the ever beautiful, timeless creature that is called the pea-lizard.

This creature is said to be among the favourite animals to watch for the royal family, a great number of them are found within the Wetland and freely fly from one palace to the other unmolested. The pea-lizard is a particularly amazing species of animal for it is counted in the ranks of the very few animals that are known to naturally grow and display scales of more than ten shades of colour. In the swamps, the rich merchant houses adorn their outfits with the amazingly bright scales of the Pea-lizard, this tradition has been carried over to the court of the Nara King as well.

It is known for him to bestow upon those he looks on with favour, a scale of the pea lizard. Although a powerful gesture, the favour is perhaps as useless as the scale itself, for the favour of the Nara King carries little weight outside the walls of his palace, just as the scale itself has little to no commercial value in the markets of any kingdom and just that of the Nara. The pea lizard is a special animal not just because of the colours of its scales, but also for its behaviour.

The species of the animal is known to have a stark difference between the genders, for it is the male animal of the species that is most commonly imagined when the pea lizard is mentioned for the females of the species are markedly unremarkable, however they prefer their mate to have a wild pattern of colour. So in order to tempt the female pea lizard into courtship, the male pea lizard will do its best to flaunt its colours by performing a truly mesmerising dance with all of its scales in full display.

Most commonly it prefers the dance to be performed during particularly heavy showers of rain for the vision it is able to produce in the weather is hard to resist for any female of its species and as such courtship can generally begin with the ending of the showers.
