Geography

Toras Terrace is a mid-sized to small region in the central region of Taerel. It consists of what used to be a couple hundred farms, totaling in the low 500 thousand acres, with a small town and town hall created in the near exact center of the region. The majority of the land is large grassy plains, with the hills littering the landscape. Due to a low tree concentration in the area, temperatures range on the warmer but not extremely hot side. The region is situated centrally in a way that they get all the seasons in Taerel, but to a much lesser degree than most other regions.

During the warmer seasons, there can be short periods of high winds which cause quick changes to the weather. Rain is extremely common during this time, though there may be a sparse shower or two during the colder seasons resulting in short periods of snow cover. Days during the various seasons are all roughly the same length. The winter or frozen seasons are marginally shorter. The sunny season is a bit longer, the longest day about midway though the season. In the between seasons, the days are nearly the exact same length. In the Toras, the sun makes a full cycle in the sky, reaching directly overhead midday.

The region’s soil has a naturally high nutrient concentration, hence the reason for it being chosen to be farming land by the early zu’aan. As such, when left unattended to, there is a boom and large amount of plant growth in a short period. For more effective farming, the zu’aan dug terrace platforms into the hillsides giving the region part of its namesake. Each of the platforms had a walled outer edge so that when necessary they could flood specific terraces for better plant growth.

The original trenches that were used to irrigate water for more water focused plant farming dried out over time as they weren’t maintained and the river supplying the water diverted its course over the generations. The Yoush after a short period decided to convert the trenches into a jail area for the clan member who broke their laws instead of building new structures in town. There is a small stream that runs in South-most quadrant of the region, but beyond that the only other major constant water supply (which hasn’t been tapped by zu’aan or kin’toni since the early days of the Awakening age) was an underground water table created by the now diverted river.

The aqueducts created by the other regions had long been forgotten and assumed to be part of the water table, so was left untouched and unmaintained. The Yoush, not needing to farm anymore, focused one of their tasks- beyond keeping animal friendly plants readily available- on creating a garden of sorts in town. They created stone paths in the town (which were used when talking to religious leaders) surrounded by various plants, as well as having some modest but decorative stone sculptures brought in from clans they were on good terms with. Where there were trenches in the way, closer to the outer edges of town, simple wooden bridges were built using material from the oldest and most unkept huts.

Plants

The majority of the plant life in Toras comes from the left-over farming plants that were left unattended after the zu’aan farmers were changed. One such plant was a tube-like stock by the name photonix that was commonly used in various kinds of cooking and baking. When the ground up internal lining of the stock was heated up it would create a (harmless) gas, giving the various bakes rise. When used as a seasoning the powder would give a slightly sweet taste. The outer skin of the stock was commonly shaved off and used as a wrap when cooking to help the meal keep its form.

Over time the native grasses and ground cover type vegetation that were taken out in favor of the sellable produce began to make a reappearance. The Yoush took some of these plants and worked to cultivate them for their garden walking paths. There were also some plant varieties brought by other clans that were added to the paths, including esteriantimans a bioluminescent flower like plant. The Yoush kept a close eye on these species so that they would not act as an invasive species for the plants necessary to keep their animal populations fed.

As the majority of the land is flat plains, which had been altered to better serve for farming, there is a low count of trees in the region; most were shade cover types that had to be imported and were planted in areas close to the zu’aan homes; exclusively for use midway in the fields to provide cover from the sun during breaks when planting and harvesting. There were a small handful of fruiting trees kept in the region, though they were majorly for the farmer’s personal consumption or trading with the neighboring farmers than anything to sell for profit. They were often kept in close proximity to their huts so it would be easier for immediate cleaning and consumption. Some of the trees kept were the ponx, creticom, and lamarak. In the Yoush’s hands off approach to most of the land maintenance, the amount of fruiting trees slowly increased in the respective tree’s immediate areas, but remained rare and uncommon in the region as a whole.

Field type grasses and flowering shrubs make up the majority of plant specimens in Toras Terrace. The quickest growing was a grain like grass oager. They live for one complete season before dying when the frozen season comes around. The zu’aan farmers considered it a weed though and often would remove them when found. Weasulu is a shrub that is hardy enough to last through all the season, but as the majority of the plant is made up by the flowers, it does majorly dormant when temperatures drop. The flowers fall off, and the rest of the foliage shrinks, so to outsiders the plant looks to be dead- it was not uncommon for farmers to take the plant out after the first frost in the early farming days.

The flowers were used for medicinal beverages as they contain properties that reduce stress and tension in the body.

Animals

Due to the Toras being a farming focused area, any animal that wasn’t related to food production or guarding was kept away and pushed out to the edges of the region. In the past, there had been ‘catcher pets’ of various species that had been kept for keeping small ‘critters’ types out of the food storage and stock. When the Yoush clan came to be, most catcher pets were either killed or ran away. With their predators gone, the critters found their way back to the old homes and new town. The critters that did find their way back became one of the common food sources of the Yoush. While not going out of their way to search for them, if anyone found one, they would trap or catch the creature and hand it over for it to be used for their meals.

This keeps the population in check while also not completely wiping out the populations- as some of them are also the food source for some of the other wild animals in the region. Zu’aan wondering tribes would hunt some of the larger creatures a bit further out from town in region. They were aware that a Yoush may appear (for their changing celebration) so they try to keep away from the town as much as possible, but there have been times that they were caught too close hunting while a Yoush clan member was let out to feed as much as they’d like. One of the commonly hunted animals being Dahosmoth.

It’s a small version of a wild boar like creature, that escaped the farms. It has a set of tusks, but also has spiked bone spires off its spine. It has a single large-nailed hoof on each of its 4 legs. It’s an omnivore, and will usually eat the plants around the region, but may sometimes eat whatever is closest- same species or not. he largest of the large size creatures was native to the region before it was pushed out for farming, Akirbi are still only in the midsized range. Akirbi measures about 2 feet as shoulder height, and is a quadrupedal by nature, allowing them to crouch close to the ground and hide in the tall grasses.

They hunt in groups of two to four and bring back their prey to their pack. They are scaled- strong enough to deflect bites and attacks from other animals, but not strong enough to deflect sharp enough weapons from piercing them. They’re particular sensitive to vibrations in the ground as they mutated over time and became blind, so they’ll pound their paws into the ground to communicate to those hunting members close to them. The small critter type animals that live in the region are ground dwellers and burrowers, so it isn’t uncommon to find holes and tunnels dug in the ground. Most are small, about palm size not including their tail.

The Akirbi most commonly hunt a creature called mudanashee. It is a large insect like creature, with 3 sets of legs, though it has an internal skeleton. mudanashee has multiple sets of eyes (the number depends on the specific subspecies) both on top of and in the front of its head. It has a short tail, and whisker like offshoots around its body to sense vibrations in the soil. It hibernates during the frozen seasons as it has trouble regulating its body temperature, leaving it vulnerable to Akirbi packs.
