Geography
Originally, the Tinige mountains were tall peaks, riddled with caves and mines. After the releasing of the gas, and collapse of parts of the mountain, the Tinige area geography changed dramatically. The main change was the formation of tall, sheer cliffs. These cliffs are high up the mountain, with a sheer drop off the side, making it very hard for most creatures to reach them. The stone and rock that fell from the mountain remains at its foothills, massive piles of stone leading up to the mountain, blocking the way and making the approach very difficult.
The stone of the Tinige cliffs is mainly hard, grey stone, jutting out from the mountain. Within the mountain, there are many minerals and ores to be found, if you have equipment strong enough to break the strangely strong stone of the mountain. The Tinige mountains consist of three large peaks, all connected to one another, surrounded by a series of rolling hills. The Tinige cliffs that make the mountains famous for its overgrown plant life is the leftmost peak, which is also the tallest of the tree. This mountain is the most heavily affected by the gas and the overgrown plants.
Though the other two peaks show less intense signs of its effects as well. There are no paths, made by animals, or otherwise, leading up to the peaks. This means that on the whole, the animals of the peak have been completely isolated, developing in a completely unique way, independent of the rest of their ancestral species. On the Tinige cliffs, there is one main source of water. Starting from below the earth, a river winds it’s way down the mountain, growing in strength and size as it flows. Most of the water of the river comes from melting snow on the peak of the mountain.
Though it’s origin is subterranean. It continues to flow, winding down most of the mountain, till it falls off the north facing cliff, creating a large waterfall, which often reflects the sun, creating dancing rainbows in the air. There are little to no fish in the river, as they do not move with the water out of the mountain. The mountains are riddled with a series of caves and tunnels, both those made by the zu’aan while mining, and naturally formed ones. These tunnels do have a few living creatures in them, but not many. The Tinige mountains are not hollow.
But only have a network of tunnels cut into the rock. Cave ins are rare, as the stone of the mountain is very strong, but at one point the main cavern of the zu’aan mines did collapse, sealing the entrance to that area of the tunnels forever.
Plants
The plants of the Tinige cliffs are biologically very similar to the plants of other regions, but up scaled to massive size. Grass that usually grows around the ankles of zu’aan and kin’toni here grows to tower over the tallest of people. Bushes which previously grew close to the ground now reach the size of trees. The trees of the mountain are particularly dangerous. When they were affected by the gas, they grew to incredible sizes. Unfortunately, this gargantuan size could not be supported by the mountain. The roots of these goliaths destabilized the earth and rock of the mountain.
And the area around these trees collapsed, causing rockslides, and the trees fell with the stone they were anchored in. Following this, when trees began to grow again, they never reached such heights. Though they were still affected by the gas, and grew to much larger sizes, they never grew to a height that would damage themselves or the mountain itself. They mainly increased greatly in thickness, with the bark of the tree become a deep layer. The bushes of the Tinige cliffs are particularly interesting. When the gas affected them, they grew to the size of trees.
The entire bush grew proportionally together. The leaves became the size of a hand, and the fruit and berries of the trees became huge. Berries that could formerly be held by the handful now became so large that two hands were required to lift them. Fruit the size of a hand swelled to rival a man in weight, and in size matched a zu’aans torso. They also became particularly juicy and delicious, their size matched by their incredible taste. The flowers from which these fruits originated grew in size as well. Many of the flowers on the cliffs were large enough to be worn as a hat.
Their colours exceptionally bright and colourful, a wonder to behold. The vines were the most interestingly affected plants. Small runner plants which grew as vines across stone were heavily affected. They dramatically increased in girth and length, and began to wrap all across the cliffs. A single vine could stretch for as far as a kilometre, and be as thick as a man. They became incredibly tough, with the surface or skin of the vines being exceptionally difficult to pierce or break. They grew slower than the other plants on the cliffs, but were much stronger.
Where the vines grew, stone split before them, nothing halting the growth of these behemoths. The grass of the mountain was also a wonder to behold. In some areas the grass grew to be taller than any person, and as thick as a wall. They retained their original structure, but are now tall and thick enough to surround and enclose any creatures in a very difficult to navigate labyrinth.
Animals
The animals of the cliffs were not directly affected by the gas, but rather indirectly were altered. The sudden increase in plant growth and size meant that food was plentiful. This allowed the creatures of the area to gorge themselves and grow strong, and over time the animals of the Tinige cliffs evolved and grew to best take advantage of their lush surroundings. The first group affected was naturally the herbivores. The size of the plants around them meant they no longer had to struggle for food, and could eat however much they needed.
This made them stronger, faster, and healthier. Over the span of generations they also grew in size, the easy lifestyle they had supporting a larger bodied creature. With food not being an issue, the herbivores began to evolve towards new goals. They began to get smarter, learning and improving. Though none became very sophisticated, they began to communicate with one another more efficiently, and passed on information better. The animals of the deer and goat families were the least affected. They retained their nimble, agile bodies, only with enhanced strength, and slightly enhanced intelligence.
The herbivorous birds of the area were more affected. They grew immensely in size, becoming so large that a single flap of their wings could launch them to the summit of the mountain. They became faster, stronger, carving nests out of the stone of the mountain peaks and carrying the new, huge blades of grass up for warmth. Yet the most profoundly affected was the ape family of the mountains. They too became larger and stronger, but their intelligence was what was most affected. Though they never at any point rivalled the zu’aan or kin’toni, they began to learn.
They began to construct very primitive structures from the materials around them, and began to make very basic tools from wood, like sharpened sticks as weaponry, and small, sharp branches used as knives to cut materials. The most heavily mutated animals were the carnivores and hunters of the mountain. The enlarged and strengthened prey meant they were forced to adapt and change in order to keep up with their new, advanced prey. Different creatures adapted differently, each developing new methods of hunting and advantage. One particular species of big cat developed toxins emitted by the claws.
Injecting their prey with a fast acting, deadly poison which killed them within hours. A species of hunting dog developed multiple retractable sharp spines across it’s body which could gore and main it’s victim, preventing any possible escape. The birds of prey were similarly affected, becoming stronger and faster, with enhanced bodies. Some learnt to burrow through stone and dart out, catching unsuspecting creatures passing below their perch. Others learnt to adjust their colouration and scent in order to better hide.
And blend in as they approached their prey, becoming stealthy terrors of the sky. All in all, though the gas did not mutate the animals directly, it still affected them and greatly changed their biology and abilities.
