Geography
Tiewlor Lush Swamp is a wetland ecosystem that spans roughly 5,298 square kilometers and stretches nearly three hundred feet deep. It is an area that is permanently filled with water. It is an inland, freshwater swamp. Rain and flooding causes water levels to fluctuate and a river feeds water into the swamp. The river is almost twenty feet across and eleven feet deep. Various fish have swam from the rivers and into the swamps. This river heads south and out of the region. The climate of the swamp has moderate to high temperatures throughout the entire year, averaging between the low fifties and high nineties. The summer brings high temperatures of nearly a hundred degrees during the day and around seventy degrees at night.
During winter, the temperature drops to around sixty degrees during the day and to the fifties at night. It can and does rain throughout the entire year and the swamp can easily receive up to eighty inches of rain in a year. The air is usually very humid and freezing rarely occurs. Snow, while not often occurring, does happen from time to time. Sometimes ice from other regions flows in the river towards the swamp, but it usually melts before reaching it. As most of the region is made of or submerged in water, there isn’t a lot of soil for a range of vegetation to grow. Crops of fruit and vegetables aren’t able to grow here. So there is not a great variety of plant life in the swamps.
Trees, shrubbery, and moss make up the majority of it. Further from the swamp, a few species of flowers may grow, but this is much closer to the edge of the region. Most of the vegetation that does grow is lush and bright in color. Aquatic animals are the ones that mostly inhabit the swamp. They have adapted to the fluctuating water levels. There are species of birds living within the trees, fish in the swamp itself, along with large and small amphibians and reptiles. Insects inhabit the swamp as well, drawn to the moisture. Some of the animals are able to live in both the water and on land. Many of the animals are carnivorous and highly territorial. Hinormi City sits towards the west of the swamp, close to the neighboring city, Ghaird.
They are close enough to each other to have easy trade, but far enough to be in two separate regions. Hinormi is the only established city in Tiewlor Lush Swamp. Since the region is mostly water, the city was built on stilts with wooden docks and huts. This allows them to be several feet above the surface of the water. Most of the animals within the swamp are unable to reach them. There is a denser collection of trees growing towards the southern part of the swamp where there is more land and less water. Some of the trees have parts that are submerged in the water, and some are almost completely submerged.
Plants
The Tiewlor Lush Swamp doesn’t support a wide range of plant life, but what does grow there is plentiful. Trees, lush moss, and shrubbery grow within the swamp. Of these, trees make up the largest percentage of plant life that inhabits Tiewlor. Obap is a special tree native to Tiewlor that grows around the edges of the swamp. The side that faces the swamp is partially submerged, but the rest sticks out above the ground. It stands at almost a hundred feet. The smooth bark is a light purple with the wood inside being a deep purple. The most important thing about this tree is its roots. It has a deep purple color and a bumpy texture. It has a variety of uses and is a deep part of the Hinormi zu’aan culture.
It can be steeped into tea to help with labor pains. They also make it into tea or have it dried out and smoked to use as a drug. It allows them to enter a dream-like state. They coat their arrows with it to take down their enemies. And, they use it to trade with Ghaird. Leross is a large tree stretching up nearly seventy feet. It has a flexible, twisting trunk covered in thick, cracked, white bark with the inside wood being a pale yellow. The tangled mess of branches are long and thin, covered with large, yellow needles. It doesn’t produce leaves, flowers, or fruit. It is one of the oldest trees in the swamp, one of which has been there since before there was a swamp.
These trees are all around the swamp, both in the water and on the land surrounding it. Scefpine is a large tree that stretches to nearly sixty feet, one of the smaller species of trees in the swamp. It has a branched, angular trunk covered in very thick, cracked, dark grey bark with the wood inside being pale green. The branches are short and thin and are covered with copious amounts of rough, small, stiff, pointed leaves with wavy edges. The leaves themselves are black and silver. In early summer, it produces large amounts of giant, yellow blossoms with slender, pointed petals that shape a tube-like cup. This species of trees are spaced far apart, with grassy ground between them.
Various species of moss grows on these trees, often covering the majority of their base. Shumm is a species of medium sized shrubbery. It grows up to almost four feet. It has numerous wide, slanted stems covered in smooth, silver and white bark, and the wood inside is white with black speckles. The branches are tall, rigid and upright with dozens of twigs that are covered with a large amount of large, long, tapering, leaves with toothed edges. The leaves themselves are silver and fuzzy looking. It produces clusters of large, vivid purple and silver flowers with needle-like petals. They fall easily and have no scent. In late winter, it forms medium-sized bronze, winged seeds that spin and fall nearby.
Animals
The majority of animals in the Tiewlor Lush Swamp are of the aquatic species. Large species of amphibians and reptiles swim in the water and birds make their nests in the abundant amount of trees. Gaskal is a breed of small bird. They have a height of around two feet tall and a wingspan of four feet across. Their feathers are a dark red at the top and transitions to white. They have tails about a foot long, made of wispy, narrow feathers. Gaskal make their homes in leross trees, in their twisted trunks. Females are the most aggressive of the species. They find their mates themselves, aggressively forcing them to mate with them. After the mating proves successful and the eggs hatch, the female will often kill the male and feed him to her young.
Females usually lay up to three eggs and mate twice a year. They are scavenger birds, preying upon the dead and dying. They prey on dead animals, dead zu’aan, and dead kin’toni. They migrate for a few months out the winter before coming back. Syllak is a breed of fish native to Tiewlor. They grow to about three feet long and have narrow bodies. Their small, dark green scales are triangle shaped. It has four side fins, one solid dorsal fin, and a solid, fan-shaped tail. They have sunken in, yellow eyes. They are omnivores with a diet consisting of other fish and small aquatic amphibians and reptiles. Females lay around fifty eggs about twice a year. They are a highly aggressive species of fish and have been known to attack animals twice their size.
Their population is large but their life expectancy is fairly short. Most only live between four to six years. The main cause of their deaths are them attacking animals bigger than they are. Soklur is a large, six legged amphibian that lives primarily in the water. They will sometimes come on land, but they prefer the water. Instead of hands or legs, it has six wide flippers and a rounded tail. They grow to a length of around six feet and can weigh up to two hundred pounds. They have soft but rubbery skin that is a pale green color. Large, slanted, black eyes lead to poor vision. Their snouts are long and narrow along with their bodies. On land, as they don’t have feet, soklur are relatively slow.
They have to hop and slide to move. But in the water, they are one of the fastest animals in the swamp. They are carnivorous animals with a diet consisting of small mammals, both in the water and on land, and the occasional bird that flies too close to the surface of the water. They are able to jump out of the water thanks to their six powerful flippers. Soklur mate for life, and lives out the rest of their life alone if their mate dies. Females can lay up to ten eggs at a time. They usually mate once a year, unless their mate has died.
