Geography
The Rymit Boreal Lake is the Northern most lake in Taerel. Despite this, the lake never froze, as the climate was just shy of cold enough to freeze the slightly salty lake. The lake took up most of the region’s territory, though there was a portion of land to the south where the original zu’aan city was built. The northern side of the lake was barricaded by a natural rocky formation, allowing protection from other northern territories’ possible invasion. The city built two ‘outpost’ watchtowers on the eastern and western borders of the region with a connected pass into the lake, so that they could quickly retreat and warn the city of an invasion should they not be able to hold them off.
The city itself had a small half circle wall that connected to the lake’s border and protected from the south. The wall wasn’t particularly strong, but it was enough to hold off any invaders long enough for their military to prepare a counter-attack. The city itself wasn’t particularly large; only about the size of a small town, as their main food source was plants and animals from the lake, so they did not need farming land. This led to their homes being small and close together to make space for their military and storage warehouse. The storage was located in the center of town, and was designated as ‘retreat’ spot that they could defend.
The military barracks was split between being by the border and next to the storage, so that if they needed to send troops or were attacked at the lake edge of the city they had an immediate response while keeping a reserve of members should that first line fail. In the recent years of the Shattering age, the lake froze over and they other two watchposts were rendered mostly useless. The city wall had been destroyed in the kin’toni take over, but had been rebuilt much larger and stronger. They pushed it out though so it was right at the region’s border so that their homes were also able to be built larger and more spaced out. This nearly doubled the city from its original size.
With the lake being frozen constantly, the Kin-ver built small ice fishing huts across the lake’s surface. These weren’t permanent buildings, as they would move them once the fishing and harvesting from the area started to stagnate. They were built of wood tied together to keep the most of the cold out, with 3 room. One was the fishing room where the hole in the ice would be made. Connected to that was the storage room where any catches or collected plants were kept until the next shipment collection. Just off from the storage was their sleeping room with the door leading outside. Rain was common before the lake froze over. Now snow is almost exclusively the only precipitation they get in the region.
The snow will often melt slightly in the sun, creating layers of icy ground between the large chunks of snow. When this happens, the previous holes in the ice fill themselves in so each ‘season’ of collection is marked on a map with special indicators to prevent collection too close to a previously collected region in a short period.
Plants
Before the Rymit Lake froze over there were a large variety of plant species. It was split between those on the small land in the region and those that grew in the lake. The Ethrebrian was a kelp like plant that was often harvested for usage in the zu’aan of the region’s food. The plant had a single gas bladder from which the leaf like strands grew from. The bladder was connected via a root like stand that grew from the roots. The lake was moderately deep, ranging 30-50 feet deep in areas where the Ethrebrian grew. The entire plant’s length, from root to the tip on the last blade was around 20 feet on average. When being harvested the zu’aan would drop hooks that would tangle with the blades and tug the gas bladder loose, allowing them to collect the blades.
The plant was sometimes referred to as ‘the underwater sun’ due to its golden to pale yellow color when at its most nutritious. When the gas bladder was removed, the root like strand would tangle with other nearby Ethrebrian plants until it regrew a new bladder to keep it afloat. The Ethrebrian though was a sensitive plant and was majorly wiped out when the lake froze over. The cooler thriving mutated version of the Ethrebrian managed to survive, but constantly struggle as its on the ‘just too cold’ side of their tolerance. Because of this, the plant has lost nearly its entire nutritional value and are just a few shades from being completely white and albino. The majority of the above ground plants withered and died when the lake froze over, and the region mostly iced over.
The Athare was a flowering bush like shrub that when left unattended grew to heights of 20 feet or more. It kept its bush like shape similar to a Yew evergreen when growing to such heights giving it an almost fantastical or whimsical appearance in comparison to the other smaller standard sized plants of the region. Its flower has a unique appearance, similar to a ballerina in a tutu, dancing in a Releve pose. The flowers would range from pale white with speckled colors to a dark almost black that gradients to a pale silver grey color. The flowers were often harvested and given as a courting gift between the zu’aan of the region. The Athare were wiped out after the first frozen season though.
The main bush lasted for the majority of the year, but the flowers were extremely delicate and were unable to survive the frost. Even the slightest rain would knock them from their stems so the first snow devastated the plant. Without their flowers, they were unable to pollenate and germinate so no new seedlings were able to take root. The extreme cold, at least for them, froze the water in their cells enough that any sugar transportation was slowed to the point that the plant started to go into necrosis. While the plant was devastated, the kin’toni of the region used the remaining wood to build their huts. They did not last long due to the fragile nature of the wood, but there was enough of a stock that they did not have to worry for decades.
Animals
As the northernmost lake in Taerel, the Rymit Boreal Lake used to have a wide array of life within its shorelines. It’s recently frozen over, keeping all its life hidden from the above world. Despite this, life on the shores continues to survive. The most common of these creatures are amphibian-like and get their water from sitting on the frozen ice, letting their body heat melt the ice so they can pull the water in through their skin. The lake itself acts as a safe place for the creatures as they are more interested in drinking than feeding when there. One of the two creatures on the shores of Rymit Boreal Lake is a large creature about 12 inches in length, with one-third of that being its body.
This creature has six legs, a long and thin tail, and thick but strong skin which is typically a light grey to allow it to camouflage into the surrounding snow. Originally omnivores, as the cold killed the plants around them, these creatures quickly adapted to their new environment and became primarily carnivorous, eating the eggs and offspring of their predators. These creatures are timid and run at any sign of danger. These creatures have a poor sense of smell, but their eyesight makes up for that. They have four small eyes allowing them to see everything that’s going on around them. Two are set in the front of their face and allow them to see things coming at them, while the other two are at the back of the head and allow them to keep watch for predators as they eat.
These creatures breed every six months with one partner and have up to six live young. Communication is only used during breeding season and the pitch distinguishes between male and female. The other creature on the shores of Rymit Boreal Lake is another amphibian-like being. It can grow to be up to three feet long, has eight legs, a short, muscular tail, and is deceptively quick. Its skin is soft and strong, and typically a dark grey, silver, white, or combination of the three. This creatures digs holes for shelter and egg-laying with its front four legs, and uses its back legs to kick the dirt out of the area. Originally omnivores, these creatures adapted quickly as well when the lake froze over and became carnivorous, eating the other creature present as well as smaller members of its species.
Despite having one eye, this creature has impressive eyesight and can see the movement of its prey up to 15 feet away. This distance can be covered as little as five seconds, giving its prey little time to react. Although this creature has no ears, it senses vibrations in the ground that warn it of anything trying to sneak up on it. Breeding season lasts for two months and these creatures breed every year, laying eggs in their dens. Typically territorial, the females become highly aggressive when protecting eggs in their dens.
