Geography

The Rhoillye region was distinctive for its mushroom covered floors that came in all sizes and shapes. The terrain itself was not particularly uniform and consisted of many hills and cliffs along with mossy rock outcrops and rough ground. Despite the difficult terrain, roads had made their way into the region due to the prominence of trade and the wealth of many of the local mushroom farmers who could sanction the expensive task of building roads. The region had a substantial amount of forest and trees that covered much of the ground.

It was under the shade provided by these trees that the mushrooms grew. The conditions in the region were just ideal for the growth of these mushrooms. The fragile spores could not survive under harsh sunlight or any temperatures rising beyond the lower twenties of the typical temperate regions. They also required a moist organic material to grow out of which was found aplenty in the floors of the Rhoillye region in the form of dead and rotting wood and plants along with other decomposing remains of animals.

The mushroom farms of the time were built around demarcated portions of these woods that would be overlooked by a few stacks of buildings that housed the owners and workers of the land. The architecture of these farms was very rudimentary and consisted of roughly built shelters made of wooden planks from the trees surrounding the region. The zu'aan had to invent many new methods to keep the invasive dampness from seeping into their wooden structures. This method involved the coating of their exposed wood surfaces to an oily sap derived from the local trees of the region.

The Rhoillye was known for its particularly cold climate that remained fairly constant all year round. Temperatures rarely rose above twenty degrees Celsius and the region received precipitation all year round in the form of light drizzles and mists. Another characteristic feature of the region was the distinct lack of proper sunlight. The region was cloudy on most days and the sky was tinted gray. The cold and damp were ideal for the growth of the mushrooms that could not stand either extremes of temperature or sunlight.

The region was covered by hundreds of mushroom plantations that that were far apart from each other, leaving many isolated gaps between each area of human concentration. The only major settlement to rise up in this region was the township known as Fyrel, that was established by a bandit named C'daia Kiyu and her devout following of bandits and outlaws. This settlement was located in the outskirts of the mushroom farms and surrounded by many canyons and gorges that acted as a natural defense against intruding armies by impeding the movement of large armies and troops.

The people of this region would call themselves the Fyrel cit zu'aan and they would become a prominent enclave during the turbulent times of the kin'toni outbreak when the settlement was the only fortress that could withstand the fury of the kin'toni hordes.

Plants

The Rhoillye region was covered in various types of vegetation that could range from the man varieties of mushrooms that grew all over its damp grounds and the trees that grew all around these mushroom fields and provided much needed shade to the mushroom plants. The vegetation in the region had to be able to adapt to the unique conditions of the region which consisted of a lack of sunlight followed by cold and damp conditions. The soil itself was mixed in with a lot of hard rock and stone that heavily limited its use for cultivation and agriculture.

The region was famous for its large mushrooms- the most common being the ildathver, the maem and the theib. Apart from these the most common type of vegetation was the burlem tree- a type of coniferous vegetation that was exceedingly plain and carried all the features of trees of this kind. The ildathver was a large mushroom that grew to over two feet off the ground and had a large diameter of over five meters. It grew on clumps of damp soil and had a very fleshy and edible body that was a staple diet of the local zu'aan in the region.

It was not as valuable as other varieties of mushroom in the region due to its abundance. It was the least demanding of all the mushroom varieties and could be easily distinguishable by its flat top shape as well as its reddish tint that stood out from among the dull and drab colors of the region. It could stand higher temperature conditions as well as a general lack of moisture and was not particularly reserved for any sort of soil condition. Due to its better adaptability, the ildathver could survive and grow in other parts of the continent.

The maem was a smaller variety of mushroom that required more specific organic material to grow on. It had a yellowish tinge and rarely grew to over a meter above the ground. Its caps ended in large round bulbs that would drag the entire stalks one way or the other. The maem grew in clumps and that could consist of hundreds of them sharing the same organic material along with their roots. They were considered a delicacy in zu'aan cuisine and were in high demand all over the continent.

Their taste was described as juicy and fleshy and often - a substitute for meat. It mostly grew around old decaying tree trunks. The theib was a medium sized variety of mushroom that grew along the Rhoillye region. It had a light greenish color with many black spores that grew out of its own cap. It could reach over a foot in heigh and a bulbous cap- over a meter in diameter. It mostly grew out of the decayed carcasses of animals in the region and was dangerous for zu'aan consumption unless one had developed a resistance to it, through training- as some bandits of the region would.

The extract of the theib mushroom was commonly used as a poison to taint daggers and weapons to cause malicious wounds that could lead to uncurable rotting of the flesh in some cases. The burlem was a common variety of coniferous tree that could grow to heights of over twenty-five meters and provided the region with enough shade for the growth of its various mushroom varieties. It was a common tree used for the regions construction purposes and had a very dull green color to match its surroundings.

Animals

The Rhoillye region was famous for a variety of wildlife that were adapted to the cold and damp conditions of the region. These animals had to rely on mushrooms for a major portion of their diet and were mostly well-fed with healthy mass and proportions due to the easy availability of their diet. The region lacked any strictly carnivorous predators but had a number of wildlife that could become hostile when provoked. The most common wildlife in the region were the domesticated kin'ia, the ler'elm, a treetop dwelling mammal, the oughradaw- a scavenging bird that would migrate to the region in winter and the ler'an a fox-like creature that fed on the wild mushrooms of the region.

The kin'ia was the most common type of animal in the Rhoillye region largely because of their large-scale use in the mushroom farms where they were bred in a large scale for use in sniffing out the location of mushroom groves in the region. They could reach over two feet in height and over five feet in length when fully grown. The kin'ia lived off the edible mushrooms of the region, just like the zu'aan They were usually fed the lower quality spores in the farms while the better ones were saved for zu'aan consumption or for sale.

The kin'ia themselves were a viable dietary source for the zu'aan. The animal came in multiple colors including white, black, light orange or in spotted mixtures of all the colors. The ler'elm was a small four limbed mammal with a prehensile tale that lived on the branches of the coniferous trees of the region. They fed exclusively on the cones of these trees and were prized for their warm hides that were used to create a variety of hats and gloves or to line the interior of cloaks, shoes and coats.

They produced very small quantities of meat, which was relatively tougher than the kin'ia, which made it less preferred among the local population of the region. The Oughradaw was a scavenging bird that would migrate to the region from its colder habitats during the winter months. The bird had two long, and wiry legs that could help it achieve very fast speeds on land. The bird could feed on all kinds of organic material including carcasses or leftovers of zu'aan foods that had been disposed of.

The bird had a long and sharp beak that it would use to ward off potential predators or threats. The zu'aan actively avoided any encounters with these birds due to the harm the beaks could cause them. The ler'an was a foxlike mammal that lived in isolated colonies all over the forest. The animal could reach over three feet in length and was very slender and agile. It had a bright coat of red fur which made it easily distinguishable from its environment.

The ler'an fed on the mushrooms of the region and would regularly sneak into farms and cause havoc by uprooting many of the mushrooms saved for trading and consumption. They were considered a nuisance by the zu'aan farmers of the region who would chase them away with stone and sticks or lay more elaborate traps when the situation became unmanageable.
