Geography

Noda Archipelago is a massive stretch of ocean dotted with several small islands off the southern coast of the Taerel continent. The northernmost island, Vetta, is still several hundred kilometres away from the mainland and is not visible if looking down at it from Taerel. This is why many zu’aan and kin’toni do not know of its existence. There are twenty-three islands in total and each is different the one next to it. They have their own ecosystems and animals and operate independently from one another. They are however all interconnect via the Noda Caverns which run beneath the ocean.

These are rumoured to have been created by a mega oceanic volcano’s eruption. The eruption caused the ocean floor where Noda is now located to rise to the surface. Several parts of it actually made it past the surface and became islands. The Caverns all meet at what was likely the eye of the volcano, the largest island known as Barrackus. Barrackus was well known for its rich greenery and coral reefs. But is also contains a large inactive volcano. This volcano would be one of the tallest peaks in Taerel had it sprouted there. The volcano is known by the local Thruer kin’toni clan as Eichenvar, The Great Fire Breather.

Eichenvar is sacred to their people and also contains the largest known entrance into the Noda Caverns. Here is where the Thruer have based their civilisation. The massive entrance stands several hundred metres tall and appears in the form of a gaping mouth in the side of The Great Fire Breather. Stagnant lava can be found in multiple places in this entrance, often it is used to help forge tools. The Thruer do not make weapons as they are pacifists. Beneath the entrance lies the halls where the Thruer mostly live. Each member has their own personal space where they can store their belongings and sleep in private.

The clan has grown over time as more kin’toni have wanted to stop the bloodshed or are naturally pacifists. The Thruer take in new members from the shore but are careful to not be followed. They also never take members back to the shore who are not original or trusted members. The clan uses much of the surface area around the Eichenvar volcano to grow crops and farm animals. They use the crops to feed the animals and the animals provide them with a source of blood they can use without having to kill any zu’aan. They have also settled on other islands that they have travelled to via the Noda Caverns.

These settlements are generally smaller, and many have been abandoned due to the natural environment on those particular islands being too harsh for the kin’toni to survive on them. The few that have been successfully settled are usually the islands that have no predators and are closer to the centre of the Archipelago. The second largest kin’toni settlement in Noda was founded on a island rich in surface minerals that the Thruer use to make fires.

Plants

Noda Archipelago is full of a large variety of native plants. Most of the plant life at Den'sule is located out to sea, especially in the reefs. Whilst the islands appear to be mainly green, out to sea the coral forests are all different colours and are home to many forms of unique plants.

Ireches bahr

The Ireches bahrs are a unique bahr plant that are native to Noda Archipelago. This is the only bahr plant that grows naturally on land in this region. The Ireches plants are small and slender, and their bahrs grow white. The plants stem is light green, and generally grows many small leaves to absorb sunlight. The bahrs unfold from their cases during the early hours of the morning when the sun is rising. The bahrs eventually shut at about midday. These bahrs can go for weeks without water, but are unable to be sustained by salt water. This means all of the Ireches bahr plants grow outside of the high tide line on the shore, and some of them can be killed off in storms or surges.

The local Thruer kin'toni cannot eat the bahrs, and merely use them for decorating their religious areas throughout the Noda Caverns.

Menata Coral

Menata Coral are large, purple coral plants that can grow up to five metres in diameter. They can only be found in the large reefs that exist inside Noda Archipelago. These coral are hard, and they grow long branches out of a central core, that is coloured a deeper shade of purple. The cores can grow up to two metres in height, and can sometimes breach the surface at low tide. Menata Corals provide a safe haven for many ocean creatures, as they can hide within their wide, sprawling branches. The Menata Corals mostly shape the reefs into the shapes that they are, all the other plants grow beneath and around the larger Menata.

These coral can not be eaten by fish, or kin'toni but often the local Thruer use their branches to make floating rafts to fish on, or use them to block some of the tunnel to the entrance of the Noda Caverns during storms.

Balanias

Balanias are long tendril-like ocean plants that grow off of rocks and coral found in the reefs of the coast of the islands in Noda Archipelago. Balanias are predatory plants that feed on meat. They allow their long tendrils to float around in the current until a fish or other small creature moves through them. The tendrils then tighten around its prey and the fish is slowly pulled into the mouth section of the plant. The plant does not have an actual mouth, but a coarse area on its body that will slowly absorb the captured prey while it is stuck in the iron grip of the tendrils.

It can take up to three days for a balanias plant to fully digest its prey. A balanias plant that is eating can be seen by the change in its colour. The plants are usually green and blue when awaiting prey, and change to black when they are eating to warn off any potential creatures looking to feed. Balania plants have been known to latch onto feet and hands of kin'toni, as the tendrils mistake them for small fish passing through.

Animals

The large majority of Noda's animal life is found in the ocean, and more specifically, the large reefs. Most of these animals would be unable to survive in any other location, as these reefs provide food and protection that other locations do not. The massive reefs north of Barrackus are famous for attracting many different kinds of creatures during night-time high tides, including dangerous predators.

Lupari

Lupari are a species of shellfish that are native and unique to Noda Archipelago. Lupari have long and somewhat thin bodies, coated with a bulbous black shell. These shellfish are only found in the reefs that run along between the many islands of Noda Archipelago. They feed on moss that grows on the coral and can also eat coral parasites. Their feedings habits allow them to co-exist with most of the coral species exceptionally well. Each Lupari can live up 3 years, during this time they grow constantly. The largest ones ever recovered by the local Thruer kin'toni measure in at thirty centimetres.

Sometimes other reef creatures consume the lupari for food. Inside the stomach of whichever creature consumes them they can sometimes form into matra orbs. These orbs can either be excreted out by the creature (Painfully) or in some cases cause the creature to die by damaging its digestive system. Once the host is dead the glowing orbs are released into the sea. These orbs are a natural source of light and at night they have a similar effect on the local sea life as the moon does at night.

Manilati

Manilati are a species of fish that are native and unique to Noda Archipelago. They are medium-size fish that have the ability to put on incredible bursts of speed when threatened. Manilati are silver in colour and feed mostly on shellfish that can be found throughout the Noda reefs. The males can be identified by their black tails and are generally larger than the females. The manilati are a very common food source for the local Thruer kin'toni clan. The Thruer do not attack zu'aan so they have to rely on animal blood to sustain them, and the Manilati contain quite a lot of blood.

The Thruer have perfected the fishing method needed to catch these agile fish and are able to catch many on a nightly basis by luring them in with shellfish strapped with glowing Mantra Orbs to light up the food.

Archivar '

Archivar are the apex predators of the Noda Archipelago oceanic ecosystem. They are not massive fish, but they make up for their lack of size with a deadly combination of speed and stealth. Archivar are deep water fish and mostly dwell outside of the shallow Noda waters during the day. Here they rest down in the depths of the ocean, undisturbed. During the night-time, when the water is high enough, the archivar swim into the Noda waters to hunt their prey. Archivar are jet black and have two dorsal fins, both of which are lined with spikes. Even their eyes are completely black and give them brilliant night vision to help them hunt.

Archivar generally stalk their prey for a few minutes before going into the kill. They do this to make sure no other predators are in the area, including other archivar that may be larger. The local Thruer kin'toni clan have lost a few members to larger archivar that were mostly likely starving. The Thruer have no idea what how big the Archivar can get due to their sightings being extremely rare.
