Geography

The Nicandran temperate forest region was a cold temperate forest that was covered by many varieties of coniferous trees and plants and many indigenous varieties of silk producing plants that were only found in the region. The terrain was not particularly friendly and had many spots of rough and unnavigable regions that made the region hard to access by land and complicated the building of any permanent roads in the region. The unreliable terrain that was mostly covered by forests was also a nightmare for the mounts used by traditional riding communities within the zu'aan.

Thus, most of the natives of this region travelled on foot and had developed distinctive physical adaptations such as stronger calf and thigh muscles to help them move with ease through the terrain. Regular clearings could be found in the regions that were occupied by settlements and the dwellings in these regions would be built using the wood felled to make the clearing. These clearings would also be made along hill sides and turned into terraced fields that allowed the natives to carry out their agricultural activities in a very limited way.

The region had a very cold climate all year round and the cause for the prominence of the coniferous trees and plants in the region. Precipitation was quite regular all year round and led to the dank and cold climate of the region. The soil was quite fertile and conductive to the growth of many plants that would spring up once the rainfall subsided. The region was also populated by a wide variety of animals that provided the settlers of the region with their dietary needs as well as fur and bone which were vital resources for crafting their clothing, tools and weapons.

The region experienced three distinct seasons- summer, rainy and winter season. During the summers, the temperature would hover below twenty-degree Celsius and had the most pleasant conditions out of all the seasons. This was the ideal time for clans to till and sow their terraced fields. The tribes would also begin to collect wood to be kept in dry storage spaces in preparation to be used as firewood in the winter months. Most of the activities such as construction and hunting would be carried out during this period.

The season was relatively dry with occasional rainfall. Summer in the region would be followed by the rainy season. Like its name suggests, the region experienced constant rainfall during this season. Many plants would crop up all over the forest floors along with many flowering plants that would bloom now. The rain was essential for the crops planted by the natives which depended on their arrival for their further growth. Temperatures were relatively similar to the summers and the region would experience foggy mornings and evenings throughout the rainy season.

Winter was the coldest season, and the region would be covered in a permanent layer of mist with the temperatures dropping to single digits at all times. Most of the surface would be devoid of green vegetation during this period and the tribes would have to rely exclusively on the wildlife for their dietary needs.

Plants

The Nicandran temperate forest's cold and damp conditions were ideal for the growth of various varieties of coniferous trees and plants. These varieties of vegetation covered more than eighty percent of the forest and were a major source of wood for the local populations. The forest was also home to many rare and native species of plants that were only found in this region, like the Skelome. This plant was famous for its fibrous outgrowth along its tips that could be harvested for clothing.

The main variant of coniferous trees in the region were the radgh and eathy trees while the most common crop for the native tribes was the sheat crop. The skelome was a plant that was most commonly associated with the region. It could grow to a maximum height of over six feet and had many stalks growing out of its upright stem. The ends of its stalks were covered in a fibrous outgrowth that was used by the natives to make their signature cloth that was famous for both its warmth as well as its protective properties.

The plant was singlehandedly responsible for the resurgence of the local tribes as viable trading partners as it provided them with a valuable commodity that was highly valued by zu'aan clans from surrounding regions. The skelome could not be grown as a large-scale plantation crop as it required the wild conditions of the forest to flourish. These natives would bring back bag loads of this plant from their hunting trips for use by their clans weaving communities. The radgh was a coniferous tree that was commonly found in the Nicandran forest along with the eathy tree.

Both varieties could grow to over twenty meters in height and could provide enough wood for the construction of a small dwelling structure. It took a great deal of effort to uproot these trees with their large trunks. The amount of manpower required to bring these trees down made clearing the region a very demanding chore. The wood of these trees was known to insulate themselves and remained dry even after the heaviest precipitation, thus, making them ideal for use as firewood and bonfires. They were commonly used in this purpose to keep hearths burning inside the local homes during the extremely cold winters.

The sheat was a very resilient and durable variety of crop that required very little maintenance and could survive both the heavy precipitation or dry conditions while also having a very large output in proportion to its size. These characteristics made the sheat an ideal crop for the region and was cultivated en masse by the natives of the region as a substitute for their regular meat diet. The crop was sowed during the summer seasons and would be fully grown and ready for harvesting by the end of the rainy season when they would reach their full-grown height of over five foot.

The Sheat grain was rolled and turned into flour that could then be consumed as bread.

Animals

The Nicandran temperate forest was home to many varieties of wildlife that could survive the cold and damp surroundings of the region. Due to the climate of the region, these animals tend to have many different adaptations to beat the cold- including several fine coats of fur that were very thick to prevent moisture from soaking into their skin and causing hypothermia or similar complications. The forest was not a safe place for unwary travelers as they were filled with many different predators that were capable of taking on both kin'toni and zu'aan.

It was the norm for all people venturing into these forests to carry their personal weapons as the risk of running into one of these predatory wildlife was very high. Some of the most common animals in the region were the Ingqueage- a giant, land-based predator, the rogav a scavenger species that roamed the forest in packs, the scheig - a wooly bird that inhabited the coniferous trees and the magoc - a pack animal that existed as herds in the wild. The ingqueage was a largest predator in the Nicandran forest and could grow to large sizes in excess of ten feet in height while weighing a hefty four hundred pounds.

The ingqueage was surprisingly agile for its size and could quickly close down distances while sprinting on all fours. It had prehensile limbs that ended in huge claws that could tear open the flesh of their prey with relative ease. The ingqueage's fur came in very drab and dull colors that allowed it to blend into the low light conditions of the Nicandran forest floor. These beasts were extremely territorial and would turn aggressive on any being that intruded into their lands. The coat of the ingqueage was valuable for its insulating properties and was regularly incorporated into the clothing of the natives.

The rogav were smaller scavengers who lived in packs. They could grow to only over three feet in height and were regularly found near old carcasses which they survived on. Their coating of fur was considered to be of inferior quality and was commonly used to make working clothes or other less decorative clothing and items. Their meat was also inedible and slightly poisonous for zu'aan consumption due to the scavenger's terrible diet. The scheig was a wooly nocturnal bird that lived in the branches of the coniferous trees.

It survived off nuts and other smaller organisms. The natives regularly fed and bred these birds as their presence kept these trees clear of any wood-eating worms and insects. They were kept around their settlements -full of wooden structures for the same purpose. The magoc was a large pack animal that also provided milk and meat. It was among the most beloved wildlife in the region and was vital for survival in the winter seasons. Apart from hauling large loads, they could also be trained to till their lands.

They could be found in large herds in the wild and were very passive towards any zu'aan approaching it. This made them easy to tame and domesticate.
