Geography
Kyrody Mesa Desert us a unique region by Taerel standards. It is a desert but yet is has plenty of natural water. Its sand is also a curious shade of deep red instead of the usual yellow or grey. Throughout the region there are also several outcrops of reddish colour rock. Some of them have formed into natural rock spires. An area in western Kyrody contains many of these red spires and was chosen by the local Untburpol kin’toni clan as a spot to settle their town of Pietar’s Keep.Pietars Keep is a large town that is built in amongst several tall rock spires. Many of the houses and other buildings are suspended in the air in-between and on the spires.
This town is most well known for is brilliant view of the Lake Armanis. The lake sustains the local wildlife which the local Untburpol kin’toni clan often need to survive. The town mains purpose is to serve as the eastern watchtower for the most significant feature in Kyrody, the Red Cross road. The Red Cross is interconnected with many over critical roads that were built by the zu’aan before the kin’toni outbreak. The road itself is very wide and well built. Over the centuries it has been crucial for trade and transport throughout the continent. Kyrody is a massive region and the Red Cross provides a passage through the expansive maze that is Kyrody.
The local Untburpol clan took over the region for the sole purpose of controlling this road. Here they can monitor who enters and leaves and exact hefty tolls from travellers. Sometimes they just attack traders for the fun of it. Either way, the Untburpol kin’toni clan has control over one of the most crucial roads in all of Taerel. nAt the other end of the Red Cross is the hidden Untburpol kin’toni settlement of Kyrodys was constructed. This was the clans first base and is now their largest. It is hidden deep in the desert away from the Red Cross where people could see it.
The town is comprised of several sandstone buildings, many of which are two or three stories high. The central building where the clan leader lives in is four stories high and is right on the shore of the nearby Lake Haritos. The lake serves a similar function to the one near Pietar’s Keep but also provides a way to cool off on a hot day. The water in Lake Haritos is cool and smooth. No plants grow in the water, so it is perfectly clear, during the day one can see the bottom several hundred metres beneath the surface. The lakebed is made mostly of red sandstone but parts of it have faded away to reveal the yellow coloured stone below.
Kyrodys also contains several religious buildings as well as stables. The stables are quite large and are built to keep the horses cool in the heat of the desert. The religious buildings include several large red pillars to honour the gods the Untburpol clan believe in.
Plants
Kyrody Mesa Desert is home to a large variety of plant life despite being a desert. The climate is very hot and dry but there are still plenty of natural water sources placed throughout the region. The plants in the region have adapted to their unique conditions and are mostly centred around the lakes that can be found throughout Kyrody.
Patinos
Patinos are a species of small tree that are native and unique to Kyrody Mesa Desert. These trees only grow to heights of two metres at most. They have thin, brown trunks that spread out into multiple branches at their peak. Patinos leaves are large and triangular, often weighing the tree down so much it leans to one side. These leaves are coloured bright yellow and can be eaten by local wildlife as well as the local Untburpol kin’toni clan. These plants grow exclusively around the edges of the many lakes that can be found in Kyrody. Their roots can grow deep and far, which allows them to crowd the lakeside with their numbers.
Patinos wood is also commonly used by the local Untburpol kin’toni clan to build their weapons and tools. These trees spread their seeds by dropping them into the water and allowing them to float to the other side of the lake. These seeds can also sink and be transferred via underground aquifers to other lakes or even other regions.
Jalakos
Jalakos are a species of fruit tree that are native and unique to Kyrody Mesa Desert. These fruit trees also grow only by the side of the many lakes throughout Kyrody. These plants can reach heights of between three and four metres tall. Their leaves are green, and their trunks are a vivid purple which stands out in the red and yellow desert. Their fruit is also purple and are only present during the spring. These fruit are edible both by the native wildlife and the Untburpol kin’toni clan. They are very healthy and help to increase blood flow and decrease the chance of getting heart problems.
The plants seeds are contained within each fruit and are spread by the creatures who eat them.
Garanos
Garanos are a species of fungi that are native and unique to Kyrody Mesa Desert. These fungi are found on the rocky outcrops and spires that can be found throughout Kyrody. Each fungus grows as a single round egg-like spore. These spores can grow to be around the size of a kin’toni’s head. These fungi are highly poisonous and spread like wildfire. Their spores are not poisonous, but their bodies are dangerous to touch. Breathing in too many spores is also dangerous for a kin’toni’s lungs. The garanous bodies are white coloured with several roots that look like spider webs running from the funguses core.
They barely need any water to survive and gain most of their energy from digesting the moisture that builds up on the rocks each day. These plants have been mostly exterminated from the spires near Pietar’s Keep.
Animals
The wildlife in Kyrody Mesa Desert has adapted to live mostly around he lakes in the region. There are a few minor predators but most of the animals that live here are reliant on the plants the grow near the lakes they need to visit for water anyway. The local Untburpol kin’toni clan are well known for hunting many of these creatures to get the blood they need to survive.
Cavanis
Cavanis are a species of nocturnal mammal that are native and unique to Kyrody Mesa Desert. These mammals live beneath the mud by the lakeside during the day. Here they can keep cool and away from any predators. They can breathe by using a thin tube that can be extended from their mouths when the bury themselves at dawn. These tubes stick out above the muddy surface and bring air in and out of the cavanis’s lungs. These creatures emerge at night to drink from the lake and forage for food amongst the trees and plants that surround it.
They are most well known for eating the Jalakos fruits. Cavanins are small and only usually grow to the around the size of a kin’toni foot. They are covered in matted black hair and their heads have no hair at all. They all have three eyes to help them see at night. These creatures are also completely deaf. This can sometimes get them killed by ambush predators.
Unimar
Unimar are a species of insect that are native and unique to Kyrody Mesa Desert. These insects are quite large and can reach lengths of up to a metre. They live near the lakes throughout Kyrody as most native creatures do. They prefer to live in the treetops, suspended several metres above the ground. They have six black legs which all end in sharp points which they can use to fend of anything that threatens them. These creatures however only eat leaves, it does not take many to sustain them. A unimar can eat one leaf a day and still be completely fine.
Their bodies are long and red coloured. Their backs are lined with poisonous spines and red armour plates. They are often hunted by the local Untburpol kin’toni clan so they hunter can take back its armour as a prize.
Philotan
Philotan are a species of predatory insect that are native and unique to Kyrody Mesa Desert. These insects are most well-known for magnificent multi-coloured wings. Their wings absorb white light and reflect back all the different colours in the spectrum. When flapping them really fast it creates a beautiful light show. These insects are smaller than the Unimar, usually they only grow to be half a metre in length. Their bodies are dark red, and their heads are lined with four powerful pincers that they use to pick up prey and fly away with them.
Often a philotan will fly into the air with its struggling prey and drop it back onto the ground to kill it or at least stun it.
