Geography
Kalir Tropical Mountains is a reasonably sized region that is covered in large mountains. The mountains are mostly separated from each other, except for the Eastern Range, which blocks Kalir off from most of central Taerel. Each mountain has its own name but there are hundreds of them, so most of the local Tinang kin’toni members don’t know all of the mountain’s names. The one that all of them have heard of however is Mount Tamineos. Mount Tamineos is the second largest mountain in Kalir and is completely covered in tropical jungle. It is also home to the capital of the Tinang kin’toni clan, Tamine.
Tamine is built at around the halfway point on the mountain, which is still very high up. Tamine is comprised of several wooden buildings and watch towers. The main buildings are nestled up against the mountain and the rest are spread out down the slope. The town is surrounded by stone walls that the Tinang erected to keep out the native predators. Tamine is also very near to a mountain hot spring. At the foot of Mount Tamineos is the famous Kalir Caverns. The Kalir Caverns are a section of vast caves that run beneath the ground throughout the region. The caves peak up to the surface at a variety of different points and allow for faster, more efficient travel through Kalir.
Travelling through the caves also means that the Tinang can avoid the predators and poisonous plants that live in the jungle above. The caverns are an extremely complicated network of tunnels and it has taken the Tinang kin’toni years to map and survey even a small part of it. They mostly focus on the caves nearest to the surface so they can use them to ferry kin’toni and resources to key locations in Kalir without being at risk of attack. Deeper in the caverns the explorers have discovered several unique minerals and plants. They also discovered a lone creature that roams the depths of the Kalir Caverns.
This creature is known as the Catelost and many of the more superstitious explorers believe it to be some form of ancient god. The Kalir Caverns are home to many valuable resources but their most valuable is the metal known as Tamina. Tamina is a bronze coloured metal that is extremely strong and not very flexible. The local Tinang have begun to extract lots of this material from the caverns. It can be used to forge their swords and tools. It is also used to create heavy armour for those warriors who are strong enough to lift it. However, as the Tinang kin’toni clan mine more of the Tamina, they deeper they have to venture to find more.
As the clan’s population steadily grows the demand for the metal has increased. The deeper they venture, the more sightings of the Catelost there have been. The sightings come hand in hand with the horror stories of what it has done to some of the miners and explorers.
Plants
Kalir Tropical Mountains is home to vast variety of curious plant life. Many of the plants here are poisonous or dangerous in some other way. There is plenty of rainfall in the region to sustain massive plant growth, as a result Kalir is home to some massive trees. The region is also almost entirely covered in the jungle of native plants and each species would almost be impossible to wipe out.
Kalir Junglewood Tree
Kalir junglewood trees are a species of massive tree that are native and unique to Kalir Tropical Mountains. These trees can grow to ridiculous heights if left alone long enough. The tallest Kalir Junglewood ever recorded stood at a height of one hundred and thirty metres tall. The trees grow large branches at all levels of their height, meaning that the taller trees have several layers of branches. This makes covers most of the ground below causing the jungle to become very dark in places. The trees bark is thin and brown coloured.
Their leaves are light green and shaped like ovals. The Tinang have also discovered that their sap is extremely poisonous and can kill a kin’toni merely by touching them. The sap is often harvested and used on weapons. The lumbermen must also be aware of the sap when cutting down Kalir Junglewood Trees.
Ponial mushrooms'
Ponial mushrooms are a species of mushroom that are native and unique to Kalir Tropical Mountains. These mushrooms grow almost everywhere along the jungles floor. They do not need much sunlight and are unaffected by areas covered completely by Kalir Junglewood Tree’s branches. They grow to around the size of a kin’toni fist and are bright red coloured with small brown dots on their heads. The mushrooms are highly poisonous if eaten but they are fine to touch. The spores they release are harmless to kin’toni but can stick onto them to be spread further.
The spores are visible and appear turquoise to kin’toni but most animals see them as green. These mushrooms generally grow in small groups of five to ten individual heads. The local Tinang kin’toni have no use for Ponial Mushrooms and generally just leave them alone.
Kalir kicykla
Kalir kicykla is a species of subterranean plant that is native and unique to Kalir Tropical Mountains. This plant grows from a large patch of roots that spread out over surfaces underground. Kalir kicykla is most commonly found within the Kalir Caverns. It does not need light to survive and lives mostly off of the condensation that forms along the cave walls and floors. From the root patches sprout several thin leaves that are often compared to blades of grass, hence their name. These leaves a grey in colour and are capable of retracting into the roots very quickly.
The plants leaves can sense movement nearby and instantly retract their leaves when they sense and vibrations. This can sometimes freak out the cave explorers. More usefully the kicykla has revealed several times to explorers that the Catelost is nearby.
Animals
The wildlife in Kalir Tropical Mountains is generally very unforgiving towards kin’toni. Most creatures either fear or hate the local Gybas kin’toni clan. The Gybas clan loses several kin’toni every year to the dangerous creatures the sneak through the jungle. The local animals are the reason why the Gybas kin’toni had to plan passageways through he Kalir Caverns instead of walking along the surface.
Jackaros
Jackaros are a species of spider-analogue that are native and unique to Kalir Tropical Jungle. These spiders can grow very large, the largest ever recorded was estimated to have a leg span of two metres. Jackaros can climb trees and also jump long distances. They can often be seen jumping between trees high up in the canopy. Their eight massive, black legs allow them to travel extremely fast on the ground as well. Their heads and bodies are brown in colour, their armoured abdomens also have black spots on them. Jackaros are hated by the local Gybas kin’toni clan as these giant spider-analogues cause the most kin’toni deaths in the region each year.
These spider-analogues do not spin webs, instead they hunt their prey across the jungle. Many large jackaros have attacked Tamine before and killed many. The Gybas have learnt to kill them you have to pierce their weak underbellies, which means getting close to them.
Vasinera
Vasinera are a species of bird that are native and unique to Kalir Tropical Jungle. These birds are green in colour with yellow tipped wings. They are very common throughout the region and are most well known for their warning cries. When a bird is threatened or sees a threat approaching, they let out a piercing cry to warn the other Vasinera of the danger. This also serves to warn any kin’toni in the area that a jackaros or another kin’toni may be approaching. Several of these birds are kept in cages around the Gybas settlements to give them prior warning to a predator attack.
These birds can fly but usually like to sit in the trees and not move. They are also very clumsy fliers.
Catelost
Catelost is a species of cave dwelling monster than is native and unique to Kalir Tropical Jungle. There is only one of this species left alive. This lonely creature lives deep in the bowels of the earth where it roams aimlessly. Its large and hulking body is lined with age old scars and burns. Its skin is a pale white and is see-through in places. The catelost has not seen the sun for nigh on a thousand years. Its head is misshapen and also covered in scars like its body. Its mouth is lopsided and is missing many teeth.
It survives on eating the local kicykla and occasionally kin’toni. The explorers who discovered it believe it to stand at around four metres tall, although it is always hunched over. It is believed that the catelost is the last remaining member of an ancient race of powerful monsters that were wiped out.
