Geography
The unique geography of the Iturn Dead Swamp is affected by the major tributaries of the Tarpoth, at its wides point, it is difficult to see the other bank of the river while standing at one bank. The branching passage of the river across the swamp further affects the prevalence of the marshes in the region, and creates little islands of forests throughout the swamp. These small pieces of forests are known to house several dozen small species of animals, all specialised in the most intricate manner.
The mild weather of the marshes remains as yet untouched by the advancing ice of the north, and according to the records of the kin’toni Swamp cities, the temperatures in the region have seen very little shift in the last 25 centuries. In addition to being the ideal weather for the kin’toni habitation, the swamps are also an ideal environment for the plantations of loha trees and maren trees. These crops are exported to the steppes for the large ranches where blood livestock are farmed.
The Par Anartah allocate only certain regions of the swamp forests for conversion into plantations, but do not control the trade of lohas’s and maren from the region. They famously gave up that monopoly when gaining back control of the swamp cities. Another unique aspect of the swamps is the large flying range that is possible over the swamps, many of the flying kin’toni have remarked that the swamps are one of the few places in the world where they are able to climb heights exceeding 14 km without experiencing any discomfort.
The scientists of the Par Anartah claim this to be due to the sunlight the region receives all year round and encourage the flying kin’toni clans to reside in their lands. However, given the dense canopy of the trees and ever present cloud cover over the swamp, there is little in the way of prey that is of interest to the flying clans of the kin’toni. The Iturn Dead Swamp sees massive movement of cargo both over the established land routes as well as on the river, this movement of good and kin’toni has shaped how the kin’toni of the swamps live.
Besides investing heavily in the creation of navigable roads, the resident clans set aside large troves of resources to the building and maintenance of many bridges. The journey through the river and the land of the swamps are heavily taxed but given the ease of travel and the convenience of traveling through the swamp and over the river, few traders attempt to go around the forests. The heavy tolls of river travel are a lot more tolerable given the unique design of the swamp barges, and their ability to navigate through the very shallowest waters of some of the swamp rivers.
The barges allow traders to take shortcuts through the swamp to come out closer to their destinations, and carry large amounts of goods in one trip. As a result of this river trade several kin’toni clans have setup warehouses and little outposts at the edges of the swamp, wares are only said to move from their locations at fixed intervals in order to ensure stable supply chains.
The lush marshes of the Iturn dead swamp are the largest of all the swamps in Terael , formed on the flood plains from years of denudation and deposition of the Tarpoth. The swamp is significant not only for the complex and vast ecosystem that it supports but also for the fact that it forms part of a busy kin’toni trade route, the Tarpoth allows the kin’toni clans to exchange the many luxury goods they trade among themselves including their invaluable livestock.
Although the Swamp falls within the control of the Par Anartah clan, it is one of the few places in the continent where kin’toni people from all across Terael congregate, here even the warring clans put aside their strifes in order to take part of the trade and secure for their leaders crucial trading deals and contracts. The vast swamp has patches of the densest rainforests that prevent the penetration of sunlight even on the sunniest of days. As such among the clans it is coveted position to be assigned a place in one of the swamp cities.
The soil of the marshes is infertile and requires import of massive amounts of manure in order to maintain production levels to keep all ranches supplied. There is increasing clamour by the ranching clans for the increase of the Par Anartah allocation of plantation land, and some hypothesise such an arrangement is only about a decade or two away. The trade stations on the Tarpoth in the swamp form the centres of the 3 largest and most important cities of all the swamp cities, since the fall of the Zu’aan and the rise of the kin’toni, these cities have risen and formed a distinct cultures of their own.
The residing clans of these cities fight unseen battles where just as much gold is know to flow as gold. The trading contracts of the swamp cities are envied by all the leading kin’toni clans, many are known to strategise and place contacts years in preparation of gaining a contract. However all clans pay homage to the Par Anartah for not only ensuring peace in the cities, for with violence comes a stop in trade and no clan wishes the trade of the swamp cities to ever stop.
The swamp is also famous for its unique ecosystem, here the famous carnivorous plants are known to occur in the greatest destiny, no matter how many campaigns the swamp cities have made to limit and destroy these plants, the sheer losses of kin’toni has meant that the carnivorous species are now an accepted part of the swamp. Besides the carnivorous plants, the animal species here are also diverse and a sight to behold. The beautiful displays of the Pealizard are known to stop even the coldest of hearts stunned, and the several flying lizard species of the swamp leave many a head turned when they they gather in the hundreds to fly across the morning sky.
The weather of the Swamp is humid and cool throughout the year, the summers are hot but underneath the canopy of the dense trees little heat is felt, the winters in the swamp are gentle as well. It is known to rain on most evenings in the swamp, nourishing a vegetation that is green all year round, and teeming with life, the swamp is guarded by the Par Anartah not only for its economic importance but also for its rich biodiversity. Many a kin’toni have found themselves on the wrong side of the Par Anatah for violating the sacred codes of hunting in the swamp they have enforced religiously for the past 250 centuries.
Plants
The fascinating ecosystem of the swamps has been a topic of study for many a kin’toni, there are said to be over 5000 species of trees alone in the swamps, and it is slowly becoming a section of study for the clans that are trying to find a plant that can feed the blood farms more efficiently. Presently, the large plantations of fruits have yielded the best result in producing livestock of quality blood and levels at which it can be supplied sustainably. The Llyth Kin'toni Clan of the steppes is said to have the largest number of acres under its plantations, and entrance into these is strictly controlled.
The Llyth have publicly admitted that they are experimenting with selective breedings of the old science of botany in order to come up higher yielding strains of crops to grow in the swamp. Perhaps the most interesting of the plant life in the swamp is that of the carnivorous plants, these terrible plants are deeply hated by the kin’toni for how much blood of the kin’toni they have wasted. Although few records from the time of the zu'aan indicate anything on the matter of these plants, it is established that the zu'aan have known of them since the time of the bifurcation.
The ascendancy of the carnivorous plants in the swamp was hotly contested and it is still controversial to discuss the matter openly in the swamp cities. There are certainly several hundred species of the present in the swamps, and they are all known to have somewhat of the same metabolic processes, in the past millennia, the kin’toni have tried to stamp out the presence of these plants several times but have been held back not only impossible task of identifying these plants but also for how vulnerable they are again these plants when conducting such campaigns.
Some parts of the forest were tried to set ablaze in order to combat the scourge of the carnivorous plants but given the almost daily rain in the region, few regions could be set completely ablaze if any. It was then concluded that all operations to eradicate the plants must be limited both in scope and investment. The largest problem with dealing with these plants is their ability to grow almost indistinguishably similar to the plants that surround them.
Besides their camouflaging ability the fully grown plants are known to have traps with adhesives of incredible strength as well as aromas that elicit remarkable emotions even among the most seasoned of kin’toni. A little of the physiology of the carnivorous samples is known from those that have been captured and grown in laboratories in the era of the Xerea Empire, only the very bravest of researchers where known to associate themselves with such projects, and there is as such very little definitive information about these plants.
It is however established that although these plants require very minor intakes of flesh to sustain for long durations, they do not have a capacity to be satiated. A carnivorous plant will keep killing life around it no matter how much it is able to consume.
Animals
A particular species of interest in the swamps is the swamp hog, although it is now rarely seen in the wild. The hog was hunted to near extinction given the unique blood that it has, many a kin’toni have been known to overindulge in the swamp hog’s blood, and experience hallucinations of the most amazing kind as well as pleasure beyond description. Since the breeding of the domesticated swamp hog, also known as the Par Hog, most kin’toni get their fill of the hog’s blood from the breeding stock of the Par Anartah clan.
Many have said that if it were not for the discovery of the Par hog, the Par Anartah would have lost control of the Iturn Dead swamp and their prestige. Among the many wonders of the swamp, there is certainly a lot that could be said for the various species of the endemic flying lizards, comparable to the birds of paradise of old. These flying lizards have the most amazing spectrum of colours on their scales, every time they have been recorded the patterns of their scales have elicited wonder and amazements.
The hides of the lizards are a treasured commodity in the swamps, the amazing patterns of the scales makes their hide a coveted accessory, and wearing the hide of the flying lizards is known to mark the top echelons of the kin’toni of the clans from the swamp cities, the more brilliant and colourful they are, the more impressive their wearer. Their true value is derived from the fact that each hide is good for only a few months, and soon begins to loose its brilliant sheen.
The most important animal to have originated from the swamps for the whole kin’toni civilisation has been the Sapien Monkey, a large primate that closely resembles the genetics of the Zu’aan, the zu'aan science journals theorised that their ancient ancestors share pedigree with the Sapien Monkey. They were actively searched for in the beginning of the 2nd century of ascendancy, when it became clear that the kin’toni would need to farm blood in order to sustain their population.
The Sapien Monkey were found in the most dense communities of the Iturn Dead Swamp, and were exported under the treaty of the leading kin’toni clans. The treaty established that a common blood farm would be built of a great number of the Sapien Monkey, and in order to ensure a diversity of flavour and resilient of the species a very wide genetic pool of the mammals was to be gathered and an ecosystem established where they could thrive. The Swamps were almost made the location for the Sapien monkey blood farm.
Eventually the presence of the carnivorous plants discouraged the kin’toni from setting it up at the farm. However it is common knowledge that the Sapien monkey bloodlines originating in the Swamp are the most sought after strains of blood. Although a certain population of the primates continues to inhabit the forest, but their numbers are said to be very low.The latest addition to the codes of the Par Anartah outlaw the hunting of the Sapien Monkeys found in the swamps except for the Par Anartah themselves, but it is common knowledge that even among the Par Anartah only the first and second generation kin’toni are allowed the privilege of the hunt.
