Geography

The Issran Sheild is a mostly flat, small region that barely spans 14,218 square kilometers. It stretches through several of the surrounding regions, somewhat connecting them to each other. It’s like a culmination of different geographical features. Sand, mountains, and rainforests kind of converge thanks to this region. To its north is the edge of the Hoerild Red Sand Dune, to its east is the Ewore Verdant Sands, to its south is the Chaohin Autumnal Ridge, to its west is the Xeir Mushrom Rainforest. Due to it blanketing the edges of these diverse regions, it has diverse ecological features as well. Even the climates, terrain, vegetation, animals, and soil will vary depending on what part of the region it is.

The soil is very rich and packed with nutrients to the west thanks to Xeir. It is able to support an abundance of plant life like large, leafy plants, trees that stretch over two hundred feet, and vibrant flowers of all colors, shapes, and textures. While to the north and east, plant life is more scarce thanks to Ewore and Hoerild. The middle of the region, which spans around 4,349 square kilometers, is a mass of exposed rock. There is no soil, so nothing grows there. Since there are no places for animal habitats, no plants for herbivores, and the terrain is really rough, animals only walk through the area to reach other parts of the region. While the majority of the animal population stays in specific parts of the region, there are some that have adapted to more than one or even all of the surrounding regions.

They can survive in the hot sands in the north and east, the forest in the west, and the mountainous inclines of the south. Mammals of all sizes, insects, birds, amphibians, reptiles, and even a few aquatic species are able to survive. The climate depends on location in the region. It’s hot and arid in the north and east, easily reaching the three digits or dropping almost to the negatives depending on the season. It’s humid and moderate in the west, with temperatures staying mostly in the sixties and seventies. It’s a bit fickle in the south as Chaohin’s climate is determined by altitude. This part of the region can stay within the sixties and seventies, but it can also drop to below freezing or can almost reach the triple digits.

While the climate isn’t exactly like it is in the surrounding regions, it’s pretty close. This region, while scarce in vegetation for over half of its area, is rich in precious metals, gemstones, and minerals like ore. Mountains that have eroded over time, revealed even deposits that were filled to the brim. There are loads of mining shafts all over the region that were created by previous inhabitants. The Aleorma tribe have built their small settlement in the west, in the reaches of the rainforest. Their homes are made of wood from the trees and packed with dirt. A part of their settlement actually sits a bit south as well, into Chaohin. Since they sit pretty low, they can expect temperatures in the sixties and seventies.

Plants

Plant life in the main part of the Issran Shield is scarce, along with the north and east, thanks to either the quality of the soil or the complete lack of. It comes in abundance in the west and south parts of the region thanks to the surrounding regions. The soil and the climate in this part of the region is better suited for growing. Telkole is a small flower that grows in the north. They are one of the few capable of growing in this area and are the closest ones to the center of the region. They grow to about an inch tall. Their crimson red stems are thick and split into several branching stems a quarter of the way up. Small, diamond-shaped, green leaves with ripped edges grow along the length of the stem.

There are two to four small flowers growing on alternate sides up the stem. They are about half an inch wide. Their orange and yellow petals, which are shaped like rounded squares. Stick up in all directions. There are usually thirty petals per flower. Telkole have no medicinal benefits and they are inedible. Consuming them is not fatal, but they can cause upset stomachs. They only bloom during the colder months. Ishane are large flowers that grow in the western part of the region. They grow up to nearly three feet tall. Their black stems are thin and straight with a curved tip. Large, purple, fan-like leaves with dark gray bottoms and serrated edges grow at the base of the stem and a small pair grow beneath the flower head.

Three to five medium-sized flowers grow on alternate sides up the stem. They are about a foot and a half wide. Their gold, purple, and black petals are shaped like two crescent moons face back to back. Like the leaves, the petals bunch together to make a fan shape. Ishane are edible, but have no medicinal benefits. They have a slightly sweet and bitter taste to them. Ishane blooms year round. Uzead are large flowers that grow in the west. They grow up to a little over five feet tall. Their yellow stems are thin and straight, with large, pale orange and red, pleated leaves with smooth edges growing at the base up to about halfway. These tear-shaped leaves are about three feet long and four feet wide at the biggest part.

They grow on all sides of the stem. Two to five flowers grow on alternate sides of the stem. The flowers are about two feet wide. Their white petals with red, smooth edges are shaped like flat horns. The flower head is an uncoordinated mess of nearly thirty petals. The petals have a slight thickness to them. Inside, there is a gel-like substance that can be used to treat wounds. The leaves can be used as wrapping. Using both together increases the healing process and helps fight infections. They have a slight minty scent to them. Uzead only blooms during the warm months.

Animals

There is a large population of animals in the Issran Shield. Due to the unique geography of the region, there are a variety of different species. Just about every type of species can be found. Mammals that live in forests, insects that live in hot and arid environments, reptiles that live in wet environments, birds that live in mountainous regions, and even unique species that are capable of surviving in vastly different environments. Moogrum are a species of small mammal that live in the northern part of the region. They have six legs, stand at a shoulder height of about two feet, and have a short tail. Their slender bodies are about three feet long. Their thin skin is covered in short, coarse, dark red hair.

They have tiny, black noses, and small, pointed ears. They have two sets of blue eyes with slitted pupils. The top set is large and round, while the bottom set is narrow. Their heads are large and wide in comparison to their bodies. They have razor sharp teeth that make it easy to tear through tough skin and muscle. Moogrum mate once every ten months with different partners for life. Females can give birth to up to three young. Though one of the smallest mammals in the region, they are extremely aggressive, even towards each other. Young males are forced out when they mature. They live in burrows they dig in the sand. Gazyte are a species of bird that is capable of surviving in all parts of the region.

They have four legs, grow to a shoulder height of about three feet, and have two wings with a wingspan of five feet. They also have a short tail barely half a foot long. Their soft, smooth skin is covered in short, thin, feathers that are a mix of white and blue. Their long necks and small heads add an additional two feet to their overall height. Their eyes are slanted, but their horizontal pupils give them a great range of sight. Gazyte are omnivores that eat a balance amount of both plants and animals. They mate once every four years with multiple partners. Instead of nests in the trees, they make their nests on the ground at their bases. Though they are small, they are close to the top of the food chain, so most other animals leave them alone.

They are usually pretty calm, but can become aggressive when defending themselves. While they mainly stay in the west, they have been known to spend considerable time in the other parts of the region. Their physical characteristics allow them to do so. Baacilla are a species of small reptile that lives in the west part of the region. They grow to about a foot long, have four legs, and a short tail that curves slightly upward. Their thin skin is covered in circle-shaped scales that are a mix of black and red. At night, their scales turned completely black. While they have no visible ears, their hearing is extremely good. They have large, almost square-shaped, red eyes with vertical slitted pupils.

Their heads are wide and slightly flat. Their claws are filled with venom that is fatal to zu’aan if not removed. It only takes a single scratch and eighteen hours to kill. They mate twice a year with a single partner for life. Females can lay up to ten eggs per successful mating. Baacilla are herbivores. They are usually timid and only attack to protect themselves. They live close to the river running through the forest.
