==Geography==

The Xackskel region is known for its woodlands that occupy almost ninety percent of the entire terrain, the rest being tall, rocky peaks and barren mountainsides. The terrain is filled with rolling hills and valleys with many little streams that form during the rainy summer months. The region is overwhelmingly colored in bright shades of green, yellow and red, due to the treetops that cover much of the region. The woodlands of the Xackskel were evenly spaced out and the ground was less cluttered than in the more fertile regions of Taerel.

The sand was a little rocky and grainy and grass covering was quite sparse. The region was unsuitable for agriculture because of the soil conditions but was very condusive to the growth of many varieties of trees that could extend their roots deep beneath the layers of dry, grainy, rocks and into the water bed. Many of the earliest zu'aan settlers tried without success to introduce agriculture into the region. Their efforts yielded very little produce and they were finally forced to accept the realities and abandon it altogether. Instead, they were forced to rely on the large herds of grazing animals.

That regularly wandered into the region for their food and sustenance. The terrain was smooth in most parts and had many natural resources such as wood and rock that were readily available. This made it easy for the region to achieve its fast growth rate before the kin'toni outbreak. Growth and development would stall out after the events of the kin'toni outbreak when the region virtually receded back into the stone age. But, even during these times the availability of wood and stone resources allowed the zu'aan to build reliable structures for their own defense.

These small walled cities would come to be known as enclaves and contained many small and self-reliant zu'aan societies. The Xackskel woodlands had many different seasons with their own extremes. It was pleasant to live in for most of the year, barring the peak summer months when temperatures could get scorching hot. The region experienced three distinct types of seasons: summer, rainy and winter. The summer season ws characterized by very hot days and cool summers. The vegetation of the region would change color to a dull shade of green and gray as the lack of water would lead to their leaves drying out.

Animals and zu'aan would also spend most of the day under the shelter of their shades as exposure could easily lead to a stroke. The region would get respite from this heat, come the rainy season. The entire region would recieve tons of rainfall and the water drifting down from the higher mountain peaks would form many small streams that criss crossed the Xackskel region. The water table would recharge during this season and led to the return of the vegetaion's vibrant colors. The year ended with the winter season when the rainfall would cease and the region would experience mild to moderately cold temperatures.

==Plants==

The Xackskel Woodlands are filled with a wide variety of trees that are native and exclusive to the region. The region, and its brutal summers required the trees to have many adaptive features in order to survive. One of the main problems for vegetation in the Xackskel region was the abundance of a dry, rocky topsoil that had very little water retention. It was also unfertile and had very little nutrients or beneficial minerals to aid plant growth. On top of this, the plants of the Xackskel woodlands had to contend with the extreme summer temperatures that would turn the ground into a scorching heat sink.

Most of the water sources on the ground surface would disappear during this season. Thus, most of the trees in the Xackskel woodlands had very long and deep roots that could penetrate deep and find the rare water deposits under the layers of rock and debris. The region's look and colors would change according to the seasons. In summer, the region would be filled with bland and drying colors as the leaves lost their color from water loss. The region would come alive once the rainy season started. During this period the trees would start to bloom and color would return to the region once more.

The most common colors in the Xackskel were green, yellow and red- the color of healthy tree leaves. This trend would continue deep into the moderate winters when most of the trees would bear fruits. The presence of a lot of trees was condusive to the development of the region during the early parts of its history. It allowed the zu'aan to build up many enclaves and structures to secure themselves from kin'toni attacks. The quality of wood available in the region could vary from the most reliable bug resistant ones to dry mottled tree stems that were weak and suitable only for use as fuel.

Although there was a lack of cultivation and fertile grounds, the trees often served as a seasonal source of food for the zu'aan of the region. Their fruits supplemented their heavy meat-based diet and were preserved for the summer months using a variety of methods.Some of the most famous trees of the region included the Imnray, the Awf, and the Turoris. The Imray was a native species of the Xackskel woodlands. It was one of the most common trees and easily identifiable by its bright red leaves during the cooler seasons. It could grow to a height of over twenty feet.

It was very girthy and yielded a lot of wood. It was a non fruit-bearing tree, whose only purpose was to provide wood for construction and other activities.
The awf was a much rarer tree that was considerably shorter than the imray and could grow to a maximum height of fifteen feet. Its stems and branches were much thinner and provided very limited wood. It produced a bright yellow fruit in winter that was a common part of the zu'aan's dietary habits.
The third, Turoris was a tall, landky tree with very little to no branches and stems growing from it.

It was easily distinguishable because of their long extended shapes that looked like undecorated columns. They were ideal for all sorts of construction activities.

==Animals==

The Xackskel Woodland region was home to a wide variety of wildlife. This had always been the case throughout the regions long history and allowed it to support a large population inspite of the limitations to agriculture. The soil was unsuitable for cultivation in most parts and when coupled with the scorching summer months, it created conditions where no edible crops could thrive. Thus, settlers of the Xackskel have always had to rely on the wildlife for most of their dietary needs. There were more than a hundred species that could be found in the region.

From migratory birds that would make their way through the region to large herds of wild cattle that would go rampaging across the lands in search of the rare patch of grassland and water springs. The region was alson home to a large number of predators who preyed on all kinds of animals and even the zu'aan, occasionally. Most of the animals of the Xackskel followed a migratory pattern that was determined by the season. They would head for higher land and craggy mountains during the summer to avoid the blistering heat and come down into the lower hills once monsoon arrived and the woodlands were in full bloom.

The local zu'aan of the region had learned to exploit this migratory habits by anticipating their preys movement patterns and laying traps. Successful hunts could feed a small clan for many months and was vital during the summer months when the zu'aan couldn't afford to risk long hours in the heat. Some of the most well known creatures of the Xackskel woodlands were the Dral bird, the Syim and the predatory Iair. The dral was a common bird that could be found in the Xackskel during the rainy and winter months. They were a migratory species who visited the region to replenish their water reserves and breed.

They would depart before the summer months. They were a reliable source of food for the zu'aan of the region but only for the two seasons they spent in the region. They were known to make their nests on trees and were capable of drilling out hollow spaces from trees using their hardened beaks and a repeated quick-tapping motion to drill through the wood. They could weigh a full ten kilograms at their heaviest- large enough to feed a small zu'aan family. The Syim was a wild cattle species that were untamed and free to roam the woodlands as they wished.

They were very large mammals- growing to over ten feet in legth and gic feet in height. They had muscular limbs that could achieve speeds comparable to the faster kin'toni. Weighing at over five hundred pounds when fully grown, these animals were a great source of nutrition for all settlers of the Xackskel.
The syim was one of the most feared predators of the woodlands. It was a large lizard like creature that could burrow beneath the rocky top soil and surprise its prey with unexpected ambushes from below. They preyed on all kinds of animals, including zu'aan and kin'toni. Making them part of a very unique class of predators.
