==Geography==

The Varel is bordered by the waters of the Usk'enthi sea on one side and the rest of the continent on the other. The coast is synonymous with long sandy coastline that extend for over hundreds of kilometers. The sand here was a dull brown bordering on grey and reflected the sombre mood of many of the slaves brought into this slaver's paradise. The sandy soil here supported the growth of many of the region's endemic species of palm trees and dry shrubs that acted like a natural shade for the people living close to the sea.

The waters that flowed off the coast were warm currents that flowed southwards in a yearly cycle. They were a beautiful turquoise in color and blended in perfectly with the clear blue skies that remained visible on most days. The waters off the coast also contained more than a few coral reeves and rocky outcrops that complicated any approach by sea, except in some naturally designated harbors. The land rose in a slow slope as it went further inland and the sand gradually gave way to dark lumpy soil that was covered in fresh tropical grass and vegetation.

This soil was mainly used for the regions plantation activities and supported a wide variety of crops. Its fertility and the massive cultivating projects were among the few reasons that necessitated the need for more labor and led to the region's slave trade. The terrain rose smoothly from these fertile regions into the highly elevated hills and mountains that overlooked the entire coastal region. These terrain in these higher mountains that overlooked the coast was very rocky and had only a few areas of vegetation comprising of hardy shrubs and plants that could grow without soil.

Many narrow brooks and streams flowed out of these rocky outcrops and into the sea, irrigating the cultivated croplands on their way. These mountains served as a decent hiding spot for the many different outlaws and illegal traders who would enter the region in search of contacts or to avoid their punishments back in thier own homelands.The entire coastal region was mostly calm, peaceful and tranquil. The only noises here were the sound of the seabirds and the crashing of the waves into the beach.

However, for some periods during the summer season- the region could come under the influence of very strong winds and rain that would ravage the entire region for weeks at a time causing massive damage to both the vegetation and wildlife. These winds would lead to strong and choppy waters that could drag boats and vessels into the notoriously sharp corals just off the islands coast. The region was hot with high levels of humidity during the summer seasons. It had an ideal climate for the growth of tropical vegetation which covered most of the inland regions of the coast.

During the winters, the heat would subside and become marginally bearable due to the effects of cool winds that blew in from the sea.

==Plants==

The vegetation of the Varel was composed of many different types of plants, from the trees and plants that could survive in the sandy soil of the coast, to the tropical trees and vegetation found further inland and the elevated rocky mountain tops that were home to only the hardiest and most resilient plants and shrubs. Some of the most common examples of the area were the palm like ingquai, the evergreen tanuwar, the large lorler and the rayelm fern. The ingquai was a common palm-like tree of the Varel.

It grew in large clumps on the sandy soil of the region and had multiple utility for the inhabitants of the region. Its first use was as a valuable source of shade to protect against the unrelenting sun and heat of the region. It was common to see the local wildlife and zu'aan alike take shelter in the shade of one of these trees during the hottest days of the summers. The tree also provided dry fleshy fruits that were easily preserved for months at a time and provided the region with a continuous source of food.

Its bark and stem were also valuable in the construction of shelters and boats to navigate the waters just off the coast. The tanuwar was an evergreen tropical tree that grew in the more fertile soil of the interior regions. It was covered in bright green leaves that were a natural food source for many of the island's wildlife. It could reach a maximum height of over twenty-five feet and was known for its thick leaf covering that could prevent sunlight from ever reaching the forest floor.

The tree also produced a juicy tropical fruit that was regularly consumed as a natural way to regulate body temperatures during the hot summer months. Its wood was also a source of firewood and crafting material for many kinds of tools. It was not the highest quality wood for this purpose but it was a legitimate substitute that could be used in the absence of better-quality wood. The lorler was the largest tree in the Varel region in terms of girth and the area it occupied. It was not very tall and reached its maximum height of twenty-five meters only in the rarest of cases.

The lorler resembled a banyan tree and had many additional roots that dropped down from its branches and into the ground. The branches of this tree were home to a wide variety of birds and reptiles that fed on their leaves and tiny berry-like fruits. The tree was also a major source of wood in the region and was most commonly used for construction of structures and high-quality equipment in the region. The rayelm fern was a hardy plant that grew in the mountains located in the interior of the Vile region.

There was very few other vegetation in these regions because of the rocky surface and lack of a soil cover. The rayelm was one of the only plants that grew on these rocky surfaces. It was a small plant with distinctive blue ferns that produced a fragrant aroma.

==Animals==

The animals of the Varel were a combination of aquatic mammals and fishes that lived in the warm waters off the Varel and the sea birds and animals that lived inland. The most famous wildlife of the region was the aquatic predator known as the tasom, the ladas which was a kind of seabird, the monkey-like thyskel and the small ormostur crab. The tasom was the apex predator of the seas around the Varel. It could grow to almost fifteen feet in length and had a slender body and rough sandpaper like skin that were a menacing green in color.

The front side of its body was characterized by its large tentacles that could wrap up and drag tiny vessels underneath. These tentacles had tiny little suckers that allowed it to attach itself to any surface and also to its prey. At the center of these tentacles was an oval mouth lined with thousands of small sharp teeth that could break down prey after they were swallowed whole. The tasom was incredibly agile could use its biological propulsion system to shoot through the waters in quick small bursts.

It mostly resided deep within the dark ocean floor and came up only to feed. It was even known to devour some shipwrecked zu'aan sailors on some occasions, giving rise to popular myths and legends about them. They were an incredibly territorial species and could turn very aggressive when their boundaries were violated. The ladas was among the most prominent sea bird in the Varel. Entire flocks of these birds would hang out around the Varel, waiting to catch some fish themselves or eat some leftover carcass that was left behind by some other predator.

The ladas was a distinctive white in color and made a high pitch squealing to communicate among themselves. They had a maximum wingspan of seven feet and had incredible power in their wings and gliding ability. They were competent hunters and hunted fishes in the sea by diving straight down into the waters from incredible heights and catching the fishes in their beaks with pin point precision. These birds were a regular source of protein for many of the local tribes and communities in the region.

They made their nests among the warm sands of the region and could get aggressive if their eggs were threatened. The thyskel was a four limbed, bipedal mammal with a tail. It grew to a maximum height of three feet and lived in the branches of the palm like trees and the big lorler and tanuwar trees in the interior forests of the region. They fed on the leaves and fruits growing on these plants and lived together in big groups with their own hierarchy and families. They were very intelligent mammals and avoided contact with other species.

They were equipped with sharp fangs that they used for attacking if any predators wandered into their territory or if any of their members were threatened. They were known to be domesticated by some members of the kin'toni as an alternative blood source. The ormostur crab was found in abundance all along the sandy beaches of the coast. They were a distinctive red in color and would walk the hundreds of meters across the beach floor every day to lay their eggs in the inland regions.

The entire beach would be covered with thousands of them during these mating rituals and they would be picked up by other predators like the ladas who could break through their hard shell with their beaks. The ormostur had two front claws for defense but it was really useless against most prey due to their slow speeds and size. They were a delicacy among most zu'aan in the region who regularly ate them as part of their daily diet.
