==Geography==

It’s raining half the week in Peraw. The weather’s like this every month of the year, waxing and waning between hot and very hot. It’s a rainforest, after all. The ground is never dry and the trees are always green. The main landmark of Peraw is, of course, Fort Gaereth. But the reason the fort was named this is because of the place where it was built — the swamp it sits atop of is also named Gaereth. Gaereth itself was a rather notable landmark on its own before the marble stronghold was built; now it’s even more distinctive. Gaereth is not a good place to build.

You might think, “Of course it’s a good place to build — why would there be a huge fort here otherwise?” The answer to this question is that the emperor who built the fort liked wasting money on digging foundations in a swamp with notoriously squishy ground. So the fort is on more or less solid ground, but unless you too wish to empty a treasury, don’t build in Gaereth. In less than a year your house will probably be sideways or something. The emperor did have an excuse for building in this swamp, though: it connects directly to the southern oceans.

If the straits which connect the swamp to the ocean are well defended — which the emperor did decide to defend — it becomes impossible to sail a navy into the bay of Gaereth. So, a perfect location for a military base if it weren’t for the sinking soil, and a silly thing like that wasn’t going to stop the emperor. Peraw’s forest grows thicker and its ground grows more solid the closer you get to its northern reaches. The ground also gets hillier and the rivers more clearly defined. There’s a few more or less abandoned and rotting villages in these parts, but they haven’t been inhabited for quite some time.

If you head south from the solid ground, though, you come to the beginnings of the swamps. The swamps are extremely dangerous to travel through, so the emperor had a road built. That road is now next to worthless since he didn’t invest nearly as much money into its foundations as he did into the foundations of Fort Gaereth: trees have grown up in the middle of it, enormous potholes full of water are common, and parts of it have been completely devoured by the swamp. These swampy areas are distinguished from the swamp of Gaereth by the amount of ground there is to stand on.

All of Gaereth you can walk through without getting anything above your waist wet. The rest of Peraw isn’t nearly so shallow; some pools are deep enough for the tallest of the trees of the rainforest to fall into longways, and show only the tips of their branches when they hit the bottom. If you do decide to traverse the wilds of Peraw, despite the dangers, I recommend bringing some rope. You’ll find it useful for pulling down trees to serve as bridges.

==Plants==

There are plenty of trees in the rainforest, of course, as well as plenty of other types of plants. The variety is stunning, often completely overwhelming to the novice botanist trying to categorize the vegetation — but some species of plants stand out far more than the others, due to their interesting and sometimes peculiar qualities. These more interesting plants are the ones here covered. For a more thorough treatment of the vegetation in Peraw, please see if you can find a decaying treatise entitled “On the Flora of the Rainforest of Peraw”.

Most of the copies have probably been destroyed since its last printing around two hundred and fifty years ago, so the book would be extremely valuable to a book collector, if you did manage to find one in more or less legible condition. The iikolrath is so named because of its deciduous nature. Normally, in this warm climate, leaves never fall from the trees they grow on, but the iikolrath happens to be an exception. Once a year, all of its leaves turn from green to red, and then fall off.

The iikolrath has no need to wait three or four months to start regrowing its leaves — as a result, it has all its leaves back a few weeks later. There are few fruits more disgusting or more healthy for you than the fruit of the gythywr Tree. The taste of a gythywr, as the fruits are naturally called, may be likened to rotting fish. But those who have had it stuffed down their throats as children boast loudly of exceptional resilience to disease. They also boast, though more quietly, of possessing blood that the kin’tonis can’t bear to taste.

The lisha nuts of the Lisha Tree used to be the most popular nuts in Taerel, but since the world collapsed, they’ve become significantly less cultivated and farmed. You can still find lisha nuts growing in the wild though! Try one! Unless you’re allergic — most people are. But they’re so good that even people with the allergy often make a habit of eating them — especially if they’re rich. Lisha nuts are still considered quite fashionable to eat — the more fashionable for their extreme rarity in the modern age. Have you seen the roots of the Brist’log Tree?

You probably have, even if you didn’t see the tree itself. Its roots can sometimes stretch for miles. The thing about the brist’log tree is that there’s only one in all of Peraw. It’s perfectly capable of producing seeds, but it doesn’t spread the seeds on its own. What it does instead is sprout new trunks, connected to its system of roots. So what might look like many separate trees are actually all the same tree, connected by the roots. The new trunks that the brist’log tree sprouts can sometimes end up starting their growth in the middle of a deep pool.

And this sometimes causes the trunks to be extremely long, as they climb upwards to the surface of the pool, just to get some light.

==Animals==

What better animal could there be to start with other than the gar'er, the namesake of the Gaereth? These small amphibians are skilled jumpers and can leap distances many times their body length. This is partially due to their muscular structure, which is very similar to that of a zu’aan, but has a much greater power to weight ratio — meaning that if zu’aan were as light as gar'ers are but maintained the strength of their muscles, they too would be able to leap similar distances. Gar'ers live in large groups called armies; a large enough army of gar'ers can empty an entire section of a swamp of ninety percent of its insects in a matter of hours.

Whereupon they will go find some other place to hunt. Their long tongues which can dart out and snatch an insect flying at full speed are the primary reason for their hunting expertise. Legend tells of a skilled warrior named Teck’naysword who studied gar'ers in order to learn how to leap like them; legend says that he succeeded, and that his thorough knowledge of the creatures was the reason for his many victories. The primary predators of gar'ers and the reason why there are still insects in the world today are the spear-beaked harin birds.

A har bird spends its youth sharpening its beak until it is in pristine condition; when the bird grows to full maturity after two years, the beak becomes harder than steel and needs no sharpening ever again. The spear-beak is no joke; kin’tonis who got too close to har eggs have perished from a dozen stabs from these weapons. Still less are the beaks of harin a joke to gar'ers, since it takes far less than a dozen stabs for a gar'er to become ready for a har’s dinner. In appearance, though, the spear-beaks seem quite ludicrously long when attached to the rest of the bird, which is comparatively small.

Though it does have long legs which are only slightly less oversized than the beak, and no less disproportionate to the rest of the bird. The primary predators of harin are the large cats known as arrethes. No other creature in the land can exceed an arrethe in stealth. These felines are jet black with black eyes, and they have padded feet, great patience, night vision, tails strong as snakes, and lightning reflexes. Of course, arrethes don’t limit themselves to eating harin; they’ll eat gar'ers if they can catch them, along with every other creature alive whose only defense is flight.

Weapons are no real deterrent to an arrethe, though. The only real way to keep one away is to stay awake, or have a friend stay awake, keeping watch. arrethes very rarely attack an armed and alert fighter, especially not if there are other fighters sleeping about him, ready to awake at any moment and join the fight. No, they’ll wait until everyone is asleep. Absolutely everyone. And then they sneak in like a nightmare from which there is no awaking, and either strangle their prey with their tails, or break its neck. Then they drag it away, in complete silence.
