== History ==

The region that the Mylye Volcanic Wastes inhabits is known for the violent volcanic eruptions that gave it its name. The eruptions destroyed everything, covering it in lava, magma, and stone. Many era’s have passed since, and life has found a way to thrive. While the eruptions did a lot of damage, it also repurposed the land. New life was able to grow, stronger than they were before. Each eruption was like a reset button being hit for the region. Both before its eruptions and after, and despite the constant threat of an eruption, this region has always had inhabitants. While it does have some violence in its history, most inhabitants have been somewhat peaceful.

This was never a region to be fought over, so territory wars were few and far between. But this temperament wasn’t due to the zu’aan having caring or peaceful mentalities. It was the rumors and myths about the place that did that. It is believed that the only time the volcano erupts is to punish zu’aan who inflict violence on others. Each time in the past that the volcano erupted, war between inhabitants was taking place. The coincidences fueled the rumors of curses and Muren, the god of punishment. They believed that Muren lived within the volcano and that his rage is what makes it erupt. Even the Dellurn tribe wholeheartedly believed in the rumors. They settled in the region because they believed it was the best place for them.

They didn’t eat meat, so the lack of animal life didn’t bother them. They loved the heat of the region since they had mainly traveled and settled in cold and icy ones in the past. The threat of another possible eruption kept most outsiders at bay, including the kin’toni. But the main reason they settled was because their somewhat unique mindsets had them believing that they would never have to face punishment from Muren. They had a narcissistic viewpoint of themselves and believed that they were the only ones that deserved to live here. Even with this mentality, they still made extra precautions to make sure they would survive. From physical preparations to religious ceremonies. They lived in tents that were easy to assemble, disassemble, and move on the off chance that the volcano does erupt.

They settled a good distance from the volcano so that they could have a head start. There were watchers whose only job was to keep an eye on the volcano. They made all sorts of offerings, from plants they believed were special to any kin’toni that fell into the various traps they placed around the region. They believed that since the kin’toni weren’t zu’aan, it would be okay to sacrifice them; it wasn’t an infliction of violence on others. By doing this, they would be cleansing violence from the world. Many important ceremonies like weddings or funerals were held in front of the volcano as a way to ask for Muren’s blessing or his guidance into the afterlife. The Mylye Volcanic Wastes was truly a haven for them.

== Geography ==

The Mylye Volcanic Wastes sits at the western coast. It spans an area of around 64,122 square kilometers. The eruptions of the Mylye Volcano have created a wasteland of volcanic debris. Despite its name, this area has soil fertile enough for plant life to grow. The eruptions destroyed almost everything, but death is the start of new life. New species of plant life were able to grow, some of which were evolved forms of what was there before. Even trees were able to grow again. The eruptions caused the lava to meet the sea and form new land as it cooled, adding more range for Mylye to cover. The lava didn’t just go one way after the eruptions, it also rolled towards the east, spilling into Nyst.

Some large stones landed in that region as well. It shares its northern border with the Ineing Springs. While there was a lot of lava to come out with the eruption, there were also pools and rivers of it that stayed underground. These rivers and pools heat some of the springs in Ineing.
There are also still pools of lava, that have yet to cool down, scattered throughout the region above ground. It’s believed that these pools are connected to the ones underground. As rain isn’t really enough to cool them down, they continue to stay hot. One of the largest is almost forty feet in diameter. There’s no way to determine how deep they are, but it is believed that the majority of them are several dozen, if not more, feet deep.

These parts of the region are considerably hotter than the rest, and stay that way year round. Even during the winter, snow melts before it can touch down. The Dellurn tribe usually migrates a bit closer to the lava pools during the winter. Just close enough to stay warm while the rest of the region freezes. The wind that comes with winter is cutting and strong, especially since there is nothing to block it like a cluster of trees. This region has a coastal climate thanks to its position. Summers are hot and dry, while winters are cold and wet. Temperatures stay between the high eighties and high nineties during the summer. It can drop to the low fifties in the winter, and even below freezing.

Severe thunderstorms roll in from the sea every once in a while, but rain can occur year round. While most of the precipitation comes in the form of rain, snow occurs deep into winter. There can be anywhere from thirty to fifty inches of rain per year. Unlike plant life, animal life is scarce. There are a few native species that were able to survive the eruptions and adapt to the new environment, while some were completely wiped out. Habitats were destroyed and some animals were forced to permanently migrate somewhere else. Birds, insects, reptiles, and small mammals make up the animal population. The Dellurn tribe set up their settlement about halfway between the edge of the region on the west and the volcano to the east.

This was so that during the summer, they weren’t too close to the extremely hot areas of the region. Then for the winter, they didn’t want to have to travel very far to get to the hotter areas as the region could become freezing cold. The main reason was so that they would have enough time to escape should the volcano erupt again.

== Plants ==

Thanks to the eruptions of the volcano, the soil in the Mylye Volcanic Wastes are able to support a wide range of plant life. The plants have adapted to the region and its climate, thriving and constantly reproducing. Trees mainly grow at the edges of the region and are one of the less common types of plants. They are slowly becoming plentiful and spreading towards the center of the region, but it’ll probably be several thousand years before they fill the entire region. Utt are a medium-sized species of flower native to the region. They can grow up to a foot tall. Their thick, black stems have webbed lines of blue. The stem splits into a dozen branching stems about a quarter of the way up.

Large, bright purple leaves with smooth edges grow along the stems. Two flowers, eight inches in width each, grow on alternate sides of each stem. Ten tear-shaped, crimson and black petals form a loose, vase shape. They only grow at the base of the volcano. After an eruption, they are one of the first plants to grow back. While they’ve never been properly studied, it is believed that the flowers have a special sensor that allows them to detect oncoming eruptions. They then collapse into themselves in order to protect their seeds. When the eruptions stop, the magma cools, and the temperature returns to normal, the flower then pushes itself up to allow the seeds to sprout. They are edible, but offer no nutritional or medicinal benefits. They have a slightly burnt, yet sweet taste to them.

Onamire are average-sized flowers that grow up to thirteen inches tall. They have thin, straight, black stems that grow in bunches of eight. Small thorns grow along the stems. Small, v-shaped, black leaves with purple tops and smooth edges grow at the base of the stem. Each stem has around thirty small flowers that grow in drooping bunches. The flowers are around six inches wide. Their pointed, trefoil-shaped petals are purple on the bottom and a vibrant red on top. The purple from the bottom bleeds slightly onto the tops edges. The petals make a loose bell shape. At night, the petals produce a bioluminescent light. Despite its beautiful appearance, this plant is extremely poisonous.

Besides the poison filled thorns on its stem, the petals have little stinging hairs that can cause paralysis. Onamire stays in bloom all year round. Scianna are one of the few trees in the region. While they are found in other places throughout Taerel, they are rare. Their rough, black bark and bright red wood, makes the ones in this region a bit different than others. Those usually have rough, gray bark and brown wood. It is unclear why the ones that grow in Mylye are a different color than the others, but it is believed to be the result of the eruptions. Scianna in Mylye can grow up to almost sixty feet tall and three feet wide. Their trunks are narrow and crooked, with each being different from the next, this allows their overall height to vary.

Their branches are crooked as well, with small bunches of narrow, dark purple leaves with serrated edges covering them. The roots are fine and grow in a large web, making them a bit sturdy. Their leaves fall off during the winter.

== Animals ==

The Mylye Volcanic Wastes has a scarce population of animals. The animals that do inhabit the region are mainly herbivores thanks to the abundant plant life. There are a few large mammals around the edges of the region, but there are mostly birds, insects, reptiles, and small mammals. The animals are unique and able to live in such a volatile area. Grisia are a unique species of reptile that can only be found in this region. They have two legs and a long tail with thick spikes at the end. They can grow up to six feet long. Their thick, rough skin is covered in armored, black and orange scales. These scales are what make them unique as they allow them to swim within the lava pools, where they are often found peeking out of.

They have no eyes and rely on vibrations and sound to get around. There is a black, curved horn with a bright red tip on their nose. They have a life partner that they mate with twice a year.
Females can lay up to three eggs per successful mating. Their eggs also have armored scales, but are usually laid on heat vents instead of in the lava. While grisia can be aggressive, they prefer to avoid conflict. They are one of the few carnivores in the region. As they don’t have teeth, they swallow their prey whole. Their mouths are able to open wide, so they don’t have to unlock their jaws. Grisia are considered sacred by the Dellurn tribe due to their ability to withstand lava. Seeing one is considered a sign of good fortune.

Crongo are a species of small mammal that migrated to the region a bit before the Awakening Age. They have two legs, four arms, and a long, furless tail. When on their legs, they are nearly two feet tall. There are pieces of thin membrane between their arms that allow them to glide in the air. Their rough skin is covered in short, coarse, black fur. They have two sets of narrow, blue eyes with star-slitted pupils. They're omnivores and their long, narrow mouths, their blunt teeth and rough tongue are ideal for eating plants. Their noses are a bit squashed so they rely on sight and sound. Crongo have life partners and can mate up to three times a year. Females can give birth to up to three young after a successful mating.

They live in small burrows at the bottom of the volcano and are extremely territorial. Despite their aggressive natures, they try to avoid zu’aan. Ocabra are a species of bird that are found in the west of Taerel. They grow to about four feet tall and have a wingspan of almost five feet. Their rough skin is covered in wide, thin, yellow and orange feathers that have wispy ends. They have wide, protruding red eyes with horizontal pupils. Females have a tuft of black feathers in a mohawk style on the top of their head. Their beaks are short and wide, making it easier to eat plants. They live in nests around the middle of the volcano or in the trees at the edge of the region. Ocabra mate with multiple partners, once every year, throughout their life.

Females can lay up to three eggs per successful mating. The young leave the nest as soon as they are able to fly. They are normally docile, but are extremely territorial.
