==Geography ==

The Kacot Deciduous Forest is an impressive region spanning nearly 65,720 square kilometers. It is a dense forest of dozens of species of trees, some of which can stretch up to two hundred feet. Some stretch even higher due to where it grows in the forest. It borders the southern border of the Dohoh Flowering Forest. A split off of the Carni River, which stretches through the southwest of Dohoh, runs through the north of Kacot. It’s a relatively small split, only stretching about twenty feet across and ten feet deep. The river ends at a small waterfall with only a twenty foot drop, into a large lake that sits in the northeast of the region. The lake spans almost three thousand square kilometers and has a depth of almost two hundred feet.

While all the layers of a forest are important, the canopy and the forest floor are probably the most important layers. The floor is full of rich and nutrient packed soil thanks to the rain, decomposing organisms, and fallen leaves. It is capable of supporting the various plant species that make up the forest. The loose canopy allows for more light to cover the forest floor, which in turn supports a wide range of diverse plant and animal life. The third layer is where the next generation of trees lie in wait, making it an important layer as well. Small insects, cold-blooded invertebrates, birds, and small mammals are the main animal species that inhabit the forest. There are a few larger mammals and aquatic species as well, but they are in the minority.

Plant life is abundant thanks to the porous mixture of organic matter and mineral soil. The different levels of the forest determine the kind of plants that grow around each other. There is something in bloom throughout the year. The forest has a temperate climate. While the average temperature is around the fifties, it can drop below zero and rise over eighty degrees. Summer can easily rise to almost ninety degrees during the day and drop to the low sixties at night. Winters drop to the negative twenties during the day and drop to the negative thirties at night. Rainfall and snow are a common occurrence that happens year round, though it snows less often. It can bring in nearly a hundred inches of rain throughout the year.

A majority of the trees lose their leaves in the colder months and regrow in the warmer ones. The Ghardough tribe live within the trees about ten miles west of the river. There are a unique species of trees that have a somewhat hollow inside. Their bases are wide and round, and the insides are big enough for a small amount of zu’aan. The trees offer them protection from the elements and keep them hidden from enemies. They get their water from the river and the scattered creeks. The forest is capable of supporting their mostly plant based diet, though they do consume meat as well.

== Plants ==

The Kacot Deciduous Forest supports a wide and varying range of trees and other plant life thanks to its rich soil. Some stretch up to almost two hundred feet tall, while others only stretch up to around seventy. There are many plant species within the forest that are edible and/or have medicinal benefits. There are also a few carnivorous ones. Ohinque is a modest-size snap trap plant native to Kacot. They produce a single cylindrical trap that is almost eight inches wide and grows directly on the ground. The trap is a burnt orange color on the outside, and a mottled dark yellow on the inside. They have tiny, golden leaves with smooth edges. The inner surface of the trap is pressure sensitive that opens up to about a hundred and eighty degrees wide.

They snap shut to trap their prey within a fraction of a second when triggered. Ohinque is usually hidden beneath leaf litter. They attract their prey, which is mostly small mammals, with a strong, pleasant scent and have a successful kill rate of over eighty percent. It takes around two hours for them to fully digest their meals. Despite its diet, it does coexist peacefully with other plants, oftentimes sharing the nutrients it consumes through its roots. If anything larger than a small mammal triggers them, they secrete a toxin that can seep into the skin and kill once it enters the bloodstream. Iophrium are large trees, native to Kacot, that grow to almost two hundred feet.

Their base is almost a hundred feet wide. Their wide, mostly straight trunk is covered in rigged dark yellow bark. The trunks round out a bit close to the bottom of the tree. Inside of the tree, for the first two and half feet, a bright yellow wood fills the entire space. For the next thirty feet of the tree, the inside is hollow with the wood only being about six inches thick. The long and thick branches are covered with large amounts of giant, asymmetrical leaves with rounded edges. In the summer, they are a bright green and yellow color. In the autumn, before they fall off, they turn to yellow and orange. Only a few white leaves remain in the winter. Their thick roots stretch deep and grow spread out.

Tranium are large flowers that can easily grow up to four feet tall. Their stems grow in bunches of four and are wispy and straight. Large, bright orange leaves with ripped edges grow at the base of the stem and a smaller pair grow at the base of each flower head. A single flower around a foot wide grows at the end of each stem. The large petals are red with yellow, pointed edges. They form an open, upward bell shape. They only bloom during the warmer months. Tranium are both edible and have medicinal benefits. They have a slight bitter taste to them, but they also aid in breaking fevers when consumed. Their leaves can be made into a paste to treat cuts, stopping infections. The Ghardough tribe also use them to make dyes and paints.

== Animals ==

Most of the animals within the Kacot Deciduous Forest are on the smaller side. There are only a handful of large mammals. Most are pretty docile, but there are some extremely aggressive species as well. There are a balanced amount of herbivores, carnivores, and omnivores that inhabit the forest. Lanen are small, four legged mammals that can be found in forest regions. They stand at a shoulder height of about two feet and can weigh up to about forty pounds. Thin skin is covered in short, soft, pale red fur. The tips of their pointy ears are a light pink. They have large, blue eyes with vertical, slitted pupils. There are two rows of thin, curved, black spikes that go from the tops of their head and down their backs that they are able to retract.

They use their spikes as a defense mechanism. The spikes have a toxin in them that can paralyze. A fluffy tail stretches about a foot long behind them. Lanen are carnivores and are known to go after the large species in the forest. Despite their small size, they are quite a vicious species. They make their homes at the base of trees by burrowing holes. They are a species that mates for life, and will often follow their mates in death. It’s rare for one to outlive their mate. Females usually give birth to two young per mating, which happens once a year. Makuar are medium-sized birds native to Kacot. They stand at about three feet tall and have four legs. They have two sets of wings, with the largest set having a wingspan of almost five feet across and the smallest set having a wingspan of about three feet across.

Their thick skin is covered in short, wide, orange and yellow iridescent feathers. They have a tail about a foot long made up of thin, wispy feathers. Their red eyes have horizontal pupils that give them excellent vision. Their black and yellow beaks are a bit wide and curved at the end. Makuar are very aggressive, but only when defending their territory. They make their nests in the tallest trees. They are omnivorous, but they lean more towards plants. Males perform a dance in order to bond with their lifetime mate. Unlike the lanen, makuar don’t die if their mates do. With that said, they also don’t find another mate. Females can lay up to three eggs per mating, which happens once every three years. They don’t migrate during the cold months.

The wikbug is a small invertebrate that is only six inches tall. They have twelve thin, silvery blue legs, with six on each side of their squarish, oval-shaped bodies. A thick, dark blue shell covers their entire body except for their head. They retract their heads into their shells to protect themselves. They have two mandibles on their faces. They are strong enough to pierce skin. While a bite from a wikbug is not fatal, it can cause sickness if not taken care off. The skin can become irritated and a rash can cover the bite area and spread. The wikbug are herbivores and can usually be found around the middle level of the forest, within small holes they’ve made in the trees.
