No one is sure how the mushroom fields of Ila came to be. They were used to finding clusters and circles of mushrooms in the wild, or even in small gardens. But not a whole region full of nearly every type of mushroom imaginable. They covered a vast stretch of mainly flat land in the shadow of a tall mountain range. At the foot of the mountain, right before the fields begin, there is the mouth of a cave that leads into the mountains. The locals of the neighbouring regions were initially wary of the discovery, as many varieties of mushrooms are dangerous in one form or another.

But those used to the fungi helped their nervous and unfamiliar neighbours to know which ones were perfect for consumption, which ones to be careful with, and which to avoid completely. And so the fields became used as an agricultural resource to be cultivated and aid with trades with other regions. Most focused on the varieties that were safe to eat while some others saw the dangerous but not fatal varieties useful for a different sort of trade. And there were even some whose focus lay on the trade value of the types that were lethal to ingest.

The growing mushroom trade drew the attention of the Xerea Empire, who sought to monopolise the trade to help fund their research into better weapons and even bioengineering. The more dangerous strains of mushrooms were used in several experiments. Both as poisons, and as part of the bioengineering of better soldiers. However only the poisons proved viable and the Empire abandoned the use of mushrooms in other research. They continued to sell mushrooms for a while until other trades proved more profitable. The fields were then left and forgotten.

The region returned to its wild nature and thrived in its anonymity. When the kin'toni plague swept through the lands after the fall of the Xerea Empire, the fields were unchanged for many years due to the seclusion provided by the overgrowth of the surrounding areas. The rest of the world fell into chaos as the new reality fought against the old, and yet the fields remained untouched since its abandonment. Finally after much of the world had begun to settle, yer solitude of the mushroom fields was broken by the appearance of a clan of kin'toni called the [[Calia Kin'toni Clan|Calia Kin'toni Clan|]] who were looking for a safe place to call home.

These kin'toni were attempting to avoid the conflict between the kin'toni clans and the zu'aan tribes. A they decided to make the caves their home and live off the mushrooms and the local wildlife instead of draining zu'aan. Now the region is as secluded as before yet has new tenants that enjoy the very specific resources the land has to offer. The Calia enjoy the solitude and the freedom to enjoy their surroundings without the expectations to hunt and feed off other beings. The refuse to fight and instead will offer to share the mushrooms with travellers, however they might not explain which ones are safe and which aren’t.

==Geography==

Located to the immediate west of one of the north western mountain ranges and surrounded by forest regions, the mushroom fields of Ila is a place of secluded beauty. The rolling hills of the plains is covered by every type of mushroom and fungi imaginable. In the base of the mountains to the east of the fields is a cave system large enough to house a small city. There are no structures on the land though at one point there were open air tents set up to shelter the zu'aan harvesting the mushrooms and sorting out the different types so that they didn’t have to worry about mistakenly selling the poisonous varieties.

Even when the Xerea Empire took control of the region they only operated from temporary shelters and camps to keep from damaging the valuable resources of the fields. During that time the real difference to the region was the reorganisation of the mushrooms themselves. Before and since the mushrooms had grown wild and intermixed with the others. However during the time of the Xerea Empire, the fields became heavily controlled so it was easier to harvest and sort only the desire varieties they would either sell or use for their experiments.

While the random villagers from the neighbouring regions worked together and accomplished multiple jobs in organised chaos, the Xerea Empire’s harvesting efforts were strictly regimented and precise with its people only being allowed to do their one designated job. For years the land was held in the strict stagnation of the controlled harvest and regrowth periods, until the Xerea Empire abandoned the area and the mushroom trade altogether. The land was able to slowly return to its previous wild beauty and seclusion as the rest of the world forgot its existence.

Even when the Xerea Empire fell the fields remained undisturbed thanks to the overgrowth of the nearby forests acting like natural barriers. As the years passed and the lands surrounding Ila were changed by conflict and resettlement, the fields quietly remained and grew without guidance. Only the animals that made their homes under the fields or in the nearby caves where witness to the subtle changes in the makeup of the fields as the spores floated and intermingled and resettled at random. New strains and variations grew, each with their own unique properties and potential for danger.

But the undisturbed seclusion was never meant to last in a world populated by the curious and ambitious. Eventually the fields were discovered by a clan of pacifist kin'toni known as the Calia. However this did not bring a drastic change to the geography of the region as the Calia clan chose to settle in the caves as opposed to displacing any of the fields. They built a village in the caves of the mountains and spent much of their time studying and learning the different types of mushrooms and other fungi that thrived in this region. But they didn’t attempt to reorganise the growth patterns in order to make identification easy.

==Plants==

The primary vegetation of the region of Ila is the most complete list of fungi in the form of vast fields of mushrooms. The only other form of vegetation of note is the simple grass that covers the ground where the fungi are vacant. The mushrooms range in size as well as nature, with some being the same height as small trees and others being no bigger than a beetle. This unique feature of the area was the sole reason for any interest that others ever had in the location. The mushroom trade was heightened by the additional of the caps unique to the region.

This drew more attention as the market was flooded not just with edible mushrooms but also poisonous ones and even hallucinogenic ones. The Xerea Empire became interested and for a time sought to control the region and the trade. However, this was abandoned for better prospects a few years later. The fields were left alone to cultivate and grow their own hybrids and mutations over the many years of solitude. Now the area is controlled by the pacifist clan of kin'toni called the Calia. These creatures live in the nearby caves and live off the mushrooms as well as the other animals in the region.

Of the edible mushrooms in the region the faelorn, is deemed the most delicious. The concave violet cap has a circlet of yellow markings that is the basis for the regal title. The mushroom stands at just under three heads tall, and is often diced when added to the recipes of other foods. The faelorn is considered abnormally sweet and often paired with citrus to enhance the flavour of any given dish. Some people have even eaten the mushroom raw or even fresh if possible because of its taste. Of the hallucinogenic varieties that is local to the fields, the most aggressive is the gaaron.

This dangerous but not lethal mushroom is known for having a bright yellow cap with multicoloured spots. The specific psychedelic effects of the fungi involved hallucinations of monsters and other terrifying sights and sounds which induce panic in the victim. Some have even claimed to witness a rotting corpse tear through the ground and begin running after them while foaming at the mouth. This particular hallucination is what in turn gave the mushroom its commonly used name. The deadliest of the lethal mushrooms is the xaereon mushroom.

This particular all white fungus has a infundibuliform cap with subdecurrect gills which gives the appearance of a type of cup. However, even touching this mushroom is dangerous because of it’s high toxicity. Those who specialise in crafting poisons will always wear thick gloves they later destroy just to handle this mushroom, as its particular poison is one of the fastest acting poisons as well as being the most painful. Those who have witnessed someone dying of the poison have said they bent in half backwards in pain while attempting to tear out their own stomach.

==Animals==

With the primary vegetation of Ila being the vast fields of various mushrooms, the local wildlife is mainly consisting of fungi devouring herbivores with a few carnivores that hunt the others. Due to the secluded nature, the animals of the region of Ila were allowed to flourish without the intervention of hunters. Even when the region was discovered and used and altered for the exploitation of the mushrooms, the zu'aan paid no attention to the wildlife. The wildlife just avoided the harvesters and hid in the nearby caves until the region was once more abandoned and left to the whims of nature.

The only actual outside force to impact the wildlife of the region occurred when the pacifist clan of kin'toni known as the Calia arrived. Due to their need to ingest blood to survive, the Calia were forced to actively hunt and drain many of the animals that call the region home. Because of this, the wildlife population rests upon a tenuous balance between the kin'toni starving themselves to prevent any loss of life, and the decimation of every other creature to spare the clan from the guilt of potentially causing harm to any zu'aan they may encounter.

To ease the tension, the Calia will fully ingest specific psychedelic mushrooms that keep the more docile than the animals themselves. Through this strange form of restraint the clan is capable of resisting the urge to overindulge and potentially cause the wildlife of the region to go extinct. One of the more skittish yet adorable herbivores to thrive on the mushroom fields is the aeruxora or more lovingly referred to as the daalvik. This diminutive herbivore is known for its ash grey and white coarse fur white give them an almost spectral appearance.

While capable of quick evasion and sprinting when they are faced with a predator, their initial reaction when faced with potential danger is to scrunch into a tiny ball in order to appear like a fungus. They survive off they smaller varieties of edible mushrooms and often will avoid the larger ones to keep from potentially being discovered. When the area was first discovered the daalvik were often chased and befriended by the children of the harvesters, though they were never domesticated or used as actual pets. This affinity ended up betraying them as initially the Calia would drink from the ones willing to get close.

The most adept animals at finding and identifying the different types of mushrooms including the buried truffles is the ivaork. These large, tucked, and often highly aggressive if approached lifeforms is recognised by the mossy green tinge to its shaggy hair and ear splitting cry of outrage. They have a fine-tuned sense of smell and use that to quickly find and identify edible mushrooms. Observing these creatures is how the Calia learned how to tell the difference between edible and dangerous mushrooms.
