==Geography==

The Havlvanuu Cliffs is a long, narrow region. It consists of several canyons surrounded by sheer cliffs. On top of the cliffs are large areas of flat ground. These flat areas are littered with rocks that provide shelter and are the homes of most of the animals of the region. When a visitor first enters this region, they would find it quite inhospitable, and assume that little lives here. But just beneath the surface, the area is teeming with life. The climate is arid, but not dry enough to be called a desert. The weather is most often sunny.

Cloud cover is a rare welcome sight. When rains do come, they are heavy, and can cause flash flooding in the canyons. Because the area is mostly flat (aside from the canyon walls), strong winds are the norm. Small sandstorms happen regularly as the dry season approaches its end. The canyons themselves provide protection from the wind and the sand. The ground is primarily soil covered in dusty sand. It is often dry enough to have visible cracks running through it. A few times each year, the winds pick up enough to create a tornado that crawls along the top of the cliffs.

These tornadoes mark the beginning of the rainy season, and once the last tornado ends, the rain will begin. The tornadoes don’t do any real damage, but they are amazing sights to look at if you can happen to catch a glimpse of them. A camp would still be safe in the canyons. If you could view the Havlvanuu Cliffs from the sky as the birds do, you would think that the several canyons look like fingers reaching out towards the neighboring regions. On either side of the cliffs are either the Sayine Plains or the [[Uayata Sea Caves]], both of which are full of life, and the fingers look like they are reaching for both at the same time.

There is an old proverb that if you try to accomplish two goals at once, you won’t get anywhere, just like “old man Havlvanuu”. It is a mystery as to how the proverb came to exist, as it seems impossible that the region could have been seen from the sky so long ago. It is speculated that massive flooding of the region caused severe erosion, carving out the canyons. But no geologist has spent long enough studying the region to find out for sure if that is what happened, or what could have been the cause of such an event. If this was the origin of the canyons, it did happen a very long time ago.

==Plants==

There are a surprising number of plants that thrive in the harsh conditions, taking root in scattered clumps. They dig their roots deep, finding stability in the rocks below the soil. Most numerous are ferns. These ferns grow up to the size of small bushes. Their leaves are designed to not hold the wind, so that they can withstand the windstorms. As a result, they are blade-thin, and can cut anyone who attempts to touch one. There are cactus-like plants that are well-suited to the dry environment.

These cacti are not tall like the stereotypical ones, but rather they are short and round, like small barrels. They do collect water inside of them, saved up from when it rains. They also grow fruit that any of the local animals can eat, if they can work their way past the needles. There is even a unique kind of vine that grows on the east side of the cliffs, but only the east side. The mystery of why this vine only grows on one side of the canyon walls and not the other has never been explored. This vine has a firm hold in the cliff wall, and can be climbed with no risk of the vine breaking.

The vine also produces a sweet and juicy fruit that is a favorite of the local wildlife. Even though all the wildlife relish the chance to eat the fruit of these vines, the she’al control the area they grow in, so it’s indeed a rare treat for any other creature. While most of the plants are desert plants, there are a few that appear to have come from a much greener climate, further lending credence to the idea that this area was grasslands before the flooding that carved out the canyons.

After a rain, stalks of long grass will sprout and grow for about a week, before the dry conditions finally overpower them again. This grass will grow over almost all of the flat area above the canyons, but does not grow inside the canyons. Just like with the animals, the plants only grow up to a certain size. If the plants grow beyond this limit, the windstorms and tornadoes would destroy them.

==Animals==

The animals that inhabit the region are what you would expect in such an inhospitable environment: snakes and lizards that like the hot sun, rodents and scorpions that hide in the shade of rocks, and birds of prey that fly overhead and make their nests near the top of the cliffs. There are a good variety of small insects that live in the region, which act as the lowest part of the local food chain. Every other creature (except the snakes) will feed on them. The primary role of the insects is to clean up the debris after the storms, as well as any parts of creatures that the other animals won’t eat.

The insects are indifferent to the heat and the sun, so they are active at any time. The rodent-like anyau are next up on the food chain. They eat insects and some of the plants of the region. They are nimble scavengers, using whatever they can find to build their nests. They avoid the heat as much as possible, staying in the shade or coming out at night. They live in groups. They will avoid travelers. The snake like hauii eat primarily anyau, but they will also eat any lizard-like banau that are smaller than they are.

They’re the only species that doesn’t eat any insects. They prefer the heat, and can’t stand the cold, but they will hide in the rocks when the windstorms pick up. The snakes in this region prefer to be solitary. They will meet most commonly when the region gets cold, where they will group up to share body heat. They are quite dangerous to travelers. The scorpionlike yauai in this region have a balance between venom and deadly pincers. They will eat anything smaller than themselves, from insects to small anyau, banau, and hauii, and anything else that seems promising.

They are active at any time of day. They will sting anything larger than themselves in self-defense. They are even more dangerous to travelers than the hauii. The banau are able to eat anything else. They are a versatile species, doing whatever it takes to survive. They continue to grow larger over their life, and their growth appears to have no limit. They prefer the heat, so they are most active during the day. They aren’t hostile towards travelers, but will defend their territory.

The birds of prey take shelter at the top part of the cliffs, just below the flat area. They have sufficient shelter there from the windstorms and tornadoes that they can make their nests and live in safety. They prey primarily on rodents and lizards. They will ignore travelers unless they threaten their nests. On the lower and middle parts of the cliffs, there is a unique creature that resembles a combination of a bat and meerkat. These she'al live in a series of small holes in the cliff walls that extend into a cavern system where they live.

They have long bodies, with claws built for digging. They have wings and can fly and glide. These omnivores are usually nocturnal. They can climb or fly with equal precision. Their diet consists primarily of the vine fruit that grows on the cliff walls. They also eat the things that eat the vines, such as insects. They protect their home and the vines by attacking in flying swarms, screeching and using their claws. There are only small animals living in this region. Even the largest of the lizards is only the size of a small wild dog.

The main reason for this is because of the tornadoes; larger creatures are unable to find sufficient cover in the rocky terrain. The tornadoes don’t do much damage to the surviving animals because they are small enough to take proper cover and survive.
